CUSTOM MID MOTOR EBIKE ~3000-4000w?

Post by dash » Nov 13 2020 6:47am

Hello,

New to the forum following recommending from someone on a Facebook group. I am designing my own ebike frame to be used for downhill mountain biking.

My design was almost complete using the Bafang G510 at 3000w 72v with external controller however it was suggested going with a standalone mid drive motor such as the QS70(1000w) and using a left hand drive system, retaining the right side as on a standard bike rather than running everything off the cassette. To be honest, this solves much of my concern with wear on the drivetrain and also the motor is much cheaper to replace and upgradable in future.

With not having much experience of this sort of thing, I find it beneficial doing some research which includes gaining opinion from people who do have the experience. So, I wondered if you could help address some of my questions:

1) how do people rate the QS70?
2) are there any similar motors people would recommend for 3000-4000w? I was originally looking to keep the frame within 80-90mm (excluding gears) and QS70 is wider at 120mm. Waterproof or a high level or water resistance would be great.
3) are there any off-the-shelf rear hubs (I don't mean hub motor) for use with LHD? How do people achieve this?

Thanks in advance

The qs1000w is on a complete other level. It is a huge beast and will peak 10kw easy, continous 3-4kw (that's about 70kph).

The qs is 5kg just for the motor without reduction. These small drives like bafangs, the motor core is as big as a kiwi.

If you want something that is meant for 3-4kw peak, look into the gng 3000w kit (cyclone with alu mounts and cyc parts).

Cheers, should I be concerned with water resistance? How does the QS1000w hold up to water, dust and mud? It's only IP54, which is OK for dust (IP5X) but I'm really looking for 5 or 6 for water resistance. (IPx5/IPx6). Is there an alternative motor?

The Cyclone is hard to get right now. Something fishy is going on buying direct and the two us distributors are out of stock right now, I hope this changes. I’d go with the qs 90 yeah 10lbs big deal. Add a 12f necular controller and you’ll be lovin life. That motor is IPM and has benefits over a standard motor. Mostly a benefit for high speed road rides but still. It’s pretty much the same size as the cyclone anyway.

The QS has actual silicone popping out from between the metal lid and the motor body. It probably has better water resistance than most other mid motors, at least until opened.

You can get a G510 with Innotrace/Archon controller & have 3000W with 52v w/o the complication of an external controller. Exess & Watt Wagons will sell you a motor with the controller mounted or upgrade a standard G510.

As far as hub with a cassette & left side drive LMX has them on their LMX64 & sells the hub separately

They also sell motors that will produce 3600w @ 72v

The LMX hub is unnecessarily complex. Modern controllers will do a virtual freewheeling mode which eliminates the requirement for the heavy, expensive sprag clutch.
That said their new belt system looks amazing although I still have questions about durability.

Just saw this ..

https://wattwagons.com/collections/labs ... bs-edition

3000, 4000, 5000W .. ha ha ..

Looks reasonable for an entire motor, but looks like no warranty. haha ..
