Do I need (or is it advisable to get) the 52v version of the TSDZ2 to run a 52v battery on the 860c display using open source firmware, or is it simple to enable a fully charged 52v battery on the 48v version of the motor using OSF?

There are only two motor versions 36V-4000RPM and 48V-4000RPM.
With stock FW the limitations are done inside the controller FW. It is possible to reprogram stock FW for higher Voltage.
With OSF these limitations are gone and you can use the battery Voltage from your choice.
It is no problem to feed a 36V or 48V motor with 48V or 52V.
63V is the limitation of the controller components

Thanks! I wasn't sure if the OSF overrides the 48v version's stock firmware battery limitation or not :thumb:

For what it's worth, that's the combination I just purchased (48v motor + 52v battery + mbrusa's OSF). Works great. In the menu, you set the motor to 48v & the battery to 52v.
