Thanks Tony, I have sent you a PM.

If anyone else has one floating around it would be handy to have another to compare and repair especially if I destroy something removing the encapsulant.

I am also going to experiment with the white wire and see if it is just a closed/open type thing or if there is an analogue variation. Similarly with the battery temperature sensor, how the controller responds to simulated temperatures...

Thanks again!

G'day Chad,

Happy new year to you too. Sounds like a plan to buy it for parts if it stays cheap. If you get it, it will be interesting to see what is actually wrong with it.

Let me know if you get it.

Cheers,
Tony.

After leaving the Aprilia alone for about 2 years I've gone back to working on it. The batteries are completely gone at this stage so I've been thinking about battery options when I had the idea of using powertool batteries. Did a bit of research on it and found out I wasn't alone.

Bought 2 18V 5AH batteries from bunnings, wired it in series to get 36V and the battery indicator on the Aprilia shows fully charged! Joy!

Then when I started to pedal it gave me an over voltage warning. I then put in one only and it gave me the out of battery beeps. Is there anything I can do using these 2 batteries and the stock controller? I thought the stock controller can handle 36V?

Should I wait for the batteries to drain down a bit before hooking it back up?

 ..Wow !...you have a working stock Aprilia controller !.....thats a rarity.
Short of rigging up some sort of dc/dc high power (500W) converter, no i dont see a simple solution.
The stock Aprilia controller is not adjustable, and obviously 36 volts is 50% over spec for it.
Probably the cheapest solution is to change the controller for a generic 36v one (~$25 from Ebay)

Hi Sam, any particular reason you chose that spec battery over (say, VTC5s) ... bigger capacity? Also interested in the specs of the BMS

Thanks mate ;)

Vtc5 is a high current cell.

This is a 6p battery for about 20a. A touch over 3a a cell. 18650b would be an ideal cheap cell.

Lots of room inside. Could've gone 9p if needed. Anyway its time for a charge test.

I detest putting plastic fuses near batteries due to once having a sudden arc making the plastic case smoulder. Wrapped them in Kapton. Will probably also wrap them in fibreglass tape. Image

No worries, did you make the BMS as well mate?
I like the look of the 18650 format, hooking them together might be problematical though :|

Im sure you had good reason to stay at 7s, but as you intend to swap out the controller, its a missed oportunity to upgrade to 10s (36 -40v) which really makes the Aprilia a "Joy" to ride .

Yeah Tony to be honest I was not wanting to go over 7s and destroy another motor pinion. Thats a warranty claim I cant afford. Taking it from 24v to 29v is fine. My 8s used to be fine. In fact a little fast for the brakes.

I have a 22s ebike. Thats not what this style of bike is for.

Welding cells is what I do now so the battery building was fine gtadmin. Its a stock 7s bms.

I could've fit 9p no problem but its just a city commuter for this guy.

I took it for a test shakedown. Great little commuter bike. Image

Just dusting off this thread as I came across 3 of these bikes today that will also require some dusting off :D

They've been sitting in the back of an engineers workshop for the past 15 years or so. Barn find!

Just have to negotiate a price for the three, then decide what to do with them. I figure i'll keep one. First thing will have to be a lithium upgrade.

I'll post some pics soon.

What do you think is a reasonable price for all 3 in AU?

HI Guys....long time no post.

I have just had a battery made up for my Aprilias. I have sold a few of my older bikes and are left with 3 nowadays.
2 are going and the other is for another project down the track someday.
As you may remember I have modified my bikes to run with hub motors. One bike has a magic pie 3 and the other just a cheapy from China.
I did have one with a 9 continent hub motor but I sold it. I wished I hadn't now as they are a very nice little hub motor.
If you haven't seen what I have done in the past then it is pretty basic. I remove the motor off the gearbox and blank the gearbox off and then put a hub motor on the rear and use the gearbox as the bottom bracket and leave the original chainring on it.

It works very nicely! The Magic pie 3 is as smooth as silk and very quiet. The spread of power is just about perfect with good torque and a nice little surprise of a quick top end. I only change from top gear once on a morning ride of around 15 kms. I only do this because of the very big hill I live on.

Now back to the battery. This has been a bit of a problem until now as I have been using hobby king lipos....8 x 6s packs joined up to make 3 x 12s packs....15ah. They have been a pain to charge/balance over the past several years.

I though it was time to go to the 18650's and make life easier. Sam has put me onto a bloke in Bendigo ( I think) and he has built me a 13s 6P 20ah battery consisting of Sanyo cells that sit upright and a nice BMS to boot. All this fits into the original Aprilia battery box!

It is great to start off with 54 volts. The bike is quite fast and one has hydraulic disk brakes and the other the original rim brakes. I know Sam is not a fan of the rim brakes with too much power, but I choose when to go fast and when to take it easy and so far no close calls.

I have forgotten how to pst photos on here so if you want to see a pic you with have to tell me how.

Hi Tony, good to hear you are still well and "Aprilia-ing"
I have been meaning to contact you to see if you have any spare Aprilia Gboxs or parts left. I think i have another damaged cog in mine.as it is getting a little noisy.
I have been running 10s 4p , 14 Ah packs of 18650 for a year or two and these packs are so small and light.
Infact i can get 2 of them (=28Ah) in the battery compartment at once. (Maybe i should try 72v  )
Do you still have the Optibike ? ..i have messed with a couple of A2B hub drive bikes but they wont dismantle and fit in the car like the Aprilia, so they have gone again. Now i am curently assembling a dual suspension MTB (Specialised FSR) with a 48v , 750W , mid drive (TSDZ2) motor
Infact, i am also measuring up the Aprilia to see if one of these (or the Bafang "Ultra") will replace the whole Aprilia gbox assy if i cannot get a new gearset for it ?

G'day Chad,

Good to hear from you! We are keeping the Aprilias going by the sound of it. That is amazing to be able to fit 2 packs in the box and end up with 28Ah.....that would make for a very long ride. I wonder how long the pinion on the motor would last with 72V!!!!

When I got the Optibike 850HD I didn't think I would ever ride another electric bike but I got used to it and wanted more of course.
The Optibike is a very nice bike to ride. It handles beautifully and soaks up all the bumps and is very well balanced. It has one BIG drawback and that is the noise of the motor! Others have likened it to a swarm of bees coming in your direction. It wines! I still like to ride it though but only once every couple of weeks.

I ended up going the whole hog and buying a brand new Stealth F37 Fighter with all the bells and whistles. It is beyond perfect. It just does everything right and is super powerful but very quiet.

So after having the Optibike and the Stealth for the last couple of years I have gone back to riding and playing with the Aprilias as I really do love that Italian styling. I have to say though that I only like bikes with a minimum of 1000 watts nowadays and the Aprilia with the magic pie 3 peaks at 1200 watts and that is the "sweet" spot for me where I can get a bit of exercise but really has some fun as well.

I have an old dual suspension Giant that I want to put a Befang BBSHD on one day. I am amazed I am still married with my spending on toys.

Unfortunately I don't have any spare gearboxes now Chad as I sold the other bikes I sold the spares with them. I do see the odd Aprilia coming up for sale from time to time.
I would be very interested to know if you go ahead and manage to fit the Befang to the Aprilia.

Cheers,
Tony.
