Kona Stinky GNG build

Post by t0me » Jan 04 2014 11:10pm

Here's the current (EDIT: (sic) current, pffft, it still keeps changing, I'll add the changes as new posts on this thread rather than edit this one) incarnation of my GNG 450 kit.
Just finished putting it together. I'll come up with something a bit neater to cover up the controller etc and put in a master switch as unplugging the deans plug isn't going to work long term.
I haven't tested it much in anger in the current form, but I saw 2480w on the CA yesterday during a test run. The BMS didn't complain so I won't ;-)

GNG 450 kit
2003 (I think) Kona Stinky (26x2.5 tyres) with Marzocchi bomber forks (standard)
15AH LifePO4 (ping? from China) with BMS
Cyclone isis chainring set running 48/34
04b chain primary (will be changed to 25 when I've gone through the current batch of chain) 11/57 primary reduction
9 FET 3077 Mark II (Sensored) LYEN Edition Controller
Modified Lightningrods V1.0 top sheets
Modified original GNG bottom sheets
Modified front derailer with extra chain wheel
Modified bottom chain guide - from an old reflector
Modified left hand thumb throttle (is taking a little getting used to but makes the right side controls less crowded)

The half link chain, was a suggestion from on the forums here (apologies, can't remember who suggested it to me but CHEERS! :-) ).

Upper chain stay...
pic 46 above, I've taken off the standard front derailer, cut it in half as with 2 chains it didn't work whole, I've then added a tab of metal to the front (welded on) and bolted an idler wheel from an old rear deraileur to it.
I've then adjusted the derailer so that wheel sits on the top of the chain. So the chain is sandwiched between the chainring, and that idler wheel. Can't come off.
Pictures would help, I'll take some more next time I'm out in the workshop.

I've since added side covers (made from pvc pipe flattened out and shaped/painted), a kill switch, and a 48v-12v-microusb (15w) adapter to keep my GPS charged from the main bike battery.
Bike's been running really well. Had to change out the rear tyre as the old one came off the rim a few times while out bush giving me a long hike out one day (won't forget to carry a pump again in a hurry :-) ).

Still looking for a better left hand thumb throttle, something smoother.

Nice build!! Good call on keeping those chain guides, Stinky's love to drop their chain without both the upper and lower chain guides.

You should be able to remove that tensioner on the secondary with a proper chain length adjustment. It eliminates a lot of noise.

Nice work! I was underwhelmed by several recent rides on a Bafang BBS02 750W. I'm thinking GNG with the chain primary. Inspiring.

Skyungjae - love that photo of you in the air fella.

I haven't updated in a while, and seeing as its gonna go through some changes in a few weeks (months?) when the new LR kit arrives :-)
thought I'd stick up some photo's of its current form.

Currently running about 1500w (easily changable to 2kw in its current form).
CA V2.3 GNG450 0.8 chain primary halflink bmx secondary
Kona Stinky 2004 (?) frame Marzocchi bomber forks Fox rear shock Hayes 9 brakes
Custom phone cradle and torch mount, running a 48-12v converter and then a 15W micro usb charger off the main battery.

Great fun from bike path's to downhill tracks.

Nice build! Curious, what material is that in your triangle with the words on it?

Somewhat flattened out pvc pipe (about 5mm thick, 1/4"?)

Needs re-doing, but it was a quick dirty job that had ended up staying there for quite a while.

PVC pipe is thermo plastic, heat it up and you can reform it.

Still running great.

Have worn out a rear cassette and its freewheel (on the rear wheel) but that's more likely the life it had before me added to what I've put it through.

How she is at the moment.
Still debating whether to rebuild this when my LR kit arrives, or to build new from my Giant Anthem.
I'd have to sell it to buy the bits to complete that build, I don't need 2 ebikes, or I'd need to pull the battery/controller/BMS/CA off this one for it.

Anyway, pictures.
