Hello!!

I´ve been riding the bike all weekend and I´m very happy.
I just found one problem, the distance from the motor to the ground.
I need a protector! It´s mandatory to put a protector.
And a smaller chainring for the harder singeltrails.

Hey Jebu,

I actually dropped to a 40 tooth ring and will be trying it this week. And totally agree that a 44 tooth is pretty big for singletrack.

That I'm aware of you can drop all the way down to a 34 tooth for the smallest.

Here is a link to one on ebay. https://www.ebay.com/p/SRAM-Force-22-X- ... 1616552347

By the way, did you hit your motor on some rocks? If so any damage? Thinking a shield would be nice, maybe high impact plastic.

Regards,
Fred

Is that chainring compatible with the bafang spider?

Hi! I want to give a big THANK YOU to Ivy Wang and the rest of the team from Frey who I met at Sea Otter Classic on Sunday. Ivy was very welcoming to all of the ideas I shared about customizing e-bikes. She definitely knows what she's talking about - at one point in our conversation, she pointed to the "T6 - 6061" on my Jamis Dakar and explained that getting to T6 strength in the 6061 aluminum alloy requires two stages of heat treatment. And she immediately made the connection from that to economies of scale, factory versus individual frame makers. Needless to say, I was impressed!

And she wasn't just pretending to listen to my ideas; she actually pushed back on my idea that the FAT1000 or AM1000 could be customized to be a comfort bike with different handlebars and saddle, correctly pointing out that there are two completely different markets for a mountain bike with high end components and a comfort bike to ride around on the beach or flat areas. It made me stop and remember why I thought there was overlap in the first place. When my friend first told me about the 1000 watt BBSHD, he recommended a "donor bike" with full suspension and disc brakes. At that time, in Colorado, that almost always meant a used mountain bike with some better than average components. I never intended to use the resulting converted bike as a mountain bike, so I looked for comfort handle bars, gel seat, fenders, lights, etc.to make the mountain bike into a daily commuter.

Now, the inclusion of the motor in the frame design makes e-MTBs much more, well, MTB-ish. I saw them all over the mountains when I visited northern Italy last year. They were actually the norm, not the exception. But I knew the 250 watt motors were not going to have the same appeal in the USA. Frey is among the first to actually offer a frame designed for the latest high power torque-sensing Bafang motors, which is how I first stumbled upon this discussion.

But I do still think that there are many of us who are looking for a frame that can be customized to both our intended use and our budget. And, related to budget, many of us who would like a bike that can have multiple uses. Obviously, the FREY AM1000 will never be a little urban 20 inch wheel folding bike, that's a different animal. But the growing interest in 27.5+ and 29+ tells me that people want a bike that can be both a fat tire bike and a mid-fat bike just by changing the wheels. Swapping out a few different parts can allow you to have a mountain bike one day, a bike for riding on asphalt the next, and even a beach cruiser the next day, and they all benefit from the high end components that go along with Frey's core frame design. Some days you need a large battery for long trips, some days a lightweight battery.

If the customization is done in the country receiving the frame, then the cost of shipping should theoretically be less. And customers who want an IGH hub, for example, can choose whether they want an expensive model (Rohloff), something in the middle like a Nuvinci, or something very inexpensive like a 3 speed IGH off ebay. We also talked about belt drives vs chains. And the Sur-Ron style ebikes and the mini-bike e-bikes with seats for two people.

So I just wanted to say how nice it was to have someone like Ivy who actually listens to what we're saying. And I know my ideas don't represent everyone's opinion, so I'm sure people will disagree with some of my crazy ideas, but it's great to see all the new developments in electric bikes. One guy at the event did come up to me and say "I don't ride e-bikes. E-bikes are cheating. I want to earn it." And went on to explain that he was from Oregon, but I wasn't sure what the relevance of that was. He was buying an e-bike for his boss, but prior to that his boss's company had only sold Kona bikes. So there are still people who will always think e-bikes are for people who can't ride regular bikes, and I had to learn the Chinese word for "cheating" to explain his attitude. Ironically, his last words to us were, "But I really do like this throttle feature!" (the most cheating aspect of an e-bike IMHO haha).

Thanks again to Ivy and her team from Frey, it was an awesome day in Monterey!

Cheers,
Sean Daly

Not sure what a Bafang spider is but it will fit our crank assembly on the AMS1000 as it is a 110mm 5 bolt BCD system which is standard on bikes.

Here is a link to another chainring with it appears 4 to choose from and still free shipping. https://www.backcountry.com/sram-inner- ... gIFFfD_BwE

You just have to choose the 5 bolt 110mm rings.

IGH would be great, i am on Nexus7 igh with my bbs02 with 50v battery, did more then 28.000km and i weight around 108kilograms. I never had any issues with the gears or anything so it can be done.

Hi,

I have been following this thread for a while and really like the bikes and all the support! I ordered one as well.
Let's figure out the perfect settings of the torque sensor.

Many thanks!

around 400usd here shipping to France, but only for frame+motor+battery,
I suspect it might be more for the complete bike as it's heavier.

I'm still awaiting delivery so I don't know about VAT taxes. PM me if you want more info in the coming days.

Does anyone know how to use 3d design software?
With the design of the skid plate we could go to print it in 3d.
We need something like that.

Yes Sean this is something where there is a massive market, much more than mountain-biking, i`m surprised Frey haven`t developed the AM1000 frame for a road `comfort bike` as you suggest. Probably the frame would remain the same with the option of different wheels/tyres, handlebars, fenders, lights etc.

Possibly integrate into the system an `Off Road` and a `Road` mode like this ----> https://eggbikes.com/eggrider/eggrider- ... eng-lishui

Hello,

Purchased one of the am1000 bikes that was brought over for the Sea Otter Classic. Put the bike together last night and took it for its first ride. Really fun.

Wondering if any of the other owners who have tweaked their motor settings can post screenshots of the software that shows the changes? Would be hugely helpful as I can imagine the settings being improved upon. Even a list of the tweaks would be helpful. Have seen recommendations throughout this thread but it would be great to have all the info in one place.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Friends. Come back China for several days from US. We think it's a helpful trip to us to learn more and communicate with customers directly. if we are welcomed, I think we will continue to forward SEA OTTER CLASSIC in coming years, Bring some bikes and have a meeting with you! Below is a photo of AM1000 in one of mountain top o SEA OTTER CLASSIC.
IMG_0102+%281%29.jpg
Now we are busy for preparing China International Bicycle fair will be held in Shanghai during 6-9th,May.
We will take out some fresh bikes on the show. and Bike come with M500/600 system is under developing. As the Bafang battery tube is not ready yet, now we are making some demo bikes come with outter battery firstly. the new system bike will come out around middle of May I think.

I just went through your post recently days and give some quick answers following:
1. About smaller gear for AM1000, it is possible to do following from our side. Bafang prefer to give a standard offer for their easier work. so far, they only supply 44T as standard. We have found out the Bafang Chain ring supplier who supply the chain ring system for Bafang Ultra, that we told can be customized different teeth. base on the 130CBD, the smaller can match well is 40T. We will try it following.

2. About fat bike and mid fat bike convert. I also heard from some other customer that maybe it is possible to make the fat bike 4.0" compatible with 3.0" mid fat wheel. this idea we need to try, maybe we find some mid size fork, rim and so on. I just checked that the diameter to 27.5*3.0" is similar to 26*4.0" wheel set. if it is possible to change the bike can only change the wheel, it seems a good idea.
The bike suspension travel will be 100-120mm for the bike, can't be more as AM1000.
How do you think about it?
Now we are thinking to make the FAT1000 in bulk in coming 2 months. We are checking how to make it will be best to the market.
Welcome any of your ideas for our reference.

Anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area who wants to test ride the AM1000 or the FAT1000, let me know and we can arrange a day and time.

Also, I'd like to make a video walk around of both bikes, some side by side comparisons perhaps? Open to any suggestions, what is it people would like to see in a video?

I'll probably try to build some alternate wheels for both of them to see how many options will work and how it affects the feel of the bike and the difference, if any, in the clearance from the ground. I thought about trying out an IGH hub with one of them, but not sure I want to commit to removing the existing shifter and rear derailleur, so might consider it if I can leave both in place.

Also, something that was probably obvious to anyone who researched this bike or who has owned fat tire bikes or mid-fat/plus tire bikes, but totally didn't occur to me - you should make sure your bike rack can handle the wheelbase, the weight, and the tire diameter and width. Or be prepared to potentially buy adapters or a new bike rack.

The AM1000 with 27.5 x 3.0 tires still fits in my 1UP USA bike rack, but the wheelbase of the bike and the weight of the bike with battery installed were both stretching the limits of the rack. Next time I will try it with battery removed and see if the bounce and wobble are diminished. In case you can't tell from the photos, these batteries are solid, industrial-strength metal packs, not the plastic we've come to expect from the shark/whale/dolphin/hailong packs. Okay, so the 4 inch tires of the FAT1000 wouldn't fit. From the 1UP website:
– Fits 16”–29” wheels, up to 3.1” wide (see spacer kit for tires wider than 3.1”)*
– Accommodates up to 54” wheelbase

So I will need to get the $34 spacer kit for it:
Accommodates tires wider than 3.1” up to 4.9” wide

I don't own one, but heard good things about kuat NV 2.0 which says it can handle up to 48 inch wheelbase and the 4 inch tires with strap adapter. The Large Frey AM1000 has a wheelbase of 49.6 inches per the website, so that version would be too long for the kuat NV 2.0 as-is. Anyway, just so you're prepared, unlike me.

Thanks,
Sean

Ivy,

This is fantastic news on the M600 development
One feedback is that it would be great if the overall look can be as stealthy as possible (battery inside frame will really help)

Some of us don’t want to be seen riding an ebike - which I’m sure a lot of people here can relate :-)

Hi guys,

i just got my am1000 frame and it appears the swingarm got banged up during transit.

An offset like that seems pretty strange.

When disassembled, I noticed the rocker/link has to be compressed & pushed to the left pretty hard in order for it to fit back in the seat stay anchors. Compared to other FS frames it does not feel right at all to me :?

Also, there is a bearing screw that protudes out of the frame even when screwed correctly, wtf ?

edit: checked it thoroughly, this is by design, can't do nothing about it.
Grit will accumulate here, even if the bearing is sealed this is meh.

Good suggestion, I'll try to separate out my performance feedback between my thoughts on the Frey itself and my thoughts on riding a fat tire bike for the first time and what it feels like to have torque-sensing for the first time.

The tires are CST BFT 27.5x3.0 - I think Cheng Shin Tire is the parent company of Maxxis. Frey's alibaba page shows that it normally comes with Maxxis 27.5x2.8 REKON+ TLR. I'll have to check the rims and let you know.

Thanks,

Anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area who wants to test ride the AM1000 or the FAT1000, let me know and we can arrange a day and time.
What part of the Bay Area are you located in?
I'm in Orinda, next to Berkeley.
