I have been reading about the BBSHD/phase runner combo. Some have gone with a 30T crank and another poster went with a 42T crank with a 42 rear sprocket. That is a huge difference in crank selection. Is that to get a higher top speed? What would be the advantages and/or disadvantages of each? Thanks in advance.

I think it largely depends on the rear wheel size and intended use of the bike. I've been under the impression that the 30T is usually the way to go for most off-road applications (especially if the tire is anything bigger than a standard 26"). If only riding on the road with smoother/smaller tires, 42T might be the better option.
