New and improved rides at Bike Garage in Pacific Beach:
http://www.sdnews.com/view/full_story/27434145/article-New-and-improved-rides-at-Bike-Garage-in-Pacific-Beach?

Starts:
If you're looking for a new bike, or have one that needs repairs, you ought to consider parking/purchasing it at the Bike Garage.

Now open for three months, Bike Garage at 4645 Cass St., Suite 105 on the ground floor, co-owned by Ismael Bohme and Robbie Robertson, was created to serve all of Pacific Beach's cycling needs.

... includes:
There is one more thing Bike Garage specializes in that you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere else locally: selling kits to transform traditional bikes into electric ones, helping riders travel further, faster with a battery-charged electric assist.

“We offer a reasonable, entry-level electric kit, which costs about $750, to covert a regular bike into an ebike with about a 40-mile range,” Robertson said.

“You bring your own bike in, and we'll sell you the kit and install it,” said Bohme, who noted he just did an electric conversion for a vacation rental manager who wanted to be able to “hop from home to home without parking (his car) everywhere.”

(Some ebikers may like their conversions more overt... less covert.)

Is a drop bar e-bike the ultimate commuter?
("Car replacement or dirty no-good cheating machine?"):
http://www.bikeradar.com/commuting/gear/article/drop-bar-e-bike-commuter-50180/

[Insert lots of gagging here]

Starts:
I’ve got a pet theory that a drop bar road bike with a side order of motorised assistance could be the ultimate long-distance commuter, and I’ve put it to the test using Giant’s Road-E+.

goes on:
Road-going e-bikes that actually resemble road bikes are still a very small niche, with just a handful of models on the market, of which the Giant Road-E+ is one. It is essentially a nicely specced aluminium road bike with a tidily integrated Yamaha motor unit and a huge battery.

(Urban Guy asks: Watt the heck is a "road" bike? Speaking surrounded by roads... EVerywhere.)

Ends:
There are of course people out there who have hacked their e-bikes to raise or even completely remove the limiter. I can’t condone this however –– it’s not legal and it could land you in seriously hot water in the event of an accident.

It’s a shame because even an increase to 18mph would make a huge difference to the riding experience, but it is what it is.

Or maybe try a REAL electric bike? (ESB "Search found 4 matches: +"Giant Road E "")

36 Hours in Birmingham, Ala.
("This quintessential Southern city with a complex past is ready to surprise you."):
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/06/15/travel/what-to-do-36-hours-in-birmingham-alabama.html

Starts:
Founded in 1871 at the junction of railroad lines, Alabama’s largest city is used to moving forward. Part stone-ground grits and part steely grit, Birmingham flourished so quickly that it earned the name “Magic City” during the heyday of its iron trade. But this melting pot has also been a pressure cooker of racial tensions, overshadowed by a violent history of segregation and brutality against African-Americans. Today, as you retrace the steps of demonstrators who changed the course of American history on the Civil Rights Heritage Trail, you’ll find a city experiencing an electrifying revival.

... and includes:
Home of the nation’s first bike-share program that incorporates electric pedal-assisted bikes, Birmingham is ready to surprise you.

Writer Aaron Gulley ("a Nigerian-born travel and adventure writer. He has covered the world from Bali to Namibia for Outside and writes a regular column for the magazine about cycling and bike culture") back on February 14 writes "Have to say I haven’t really given all that much thought to the idea of Electric Mountain Bikes. To me, and the rest of our staff here, an electric bike seemed to be best suited to a commuter bike, a vehicle that could give you the range and the leisure to get about the city or town with relative ease and not too strenuous pedaling, still show up for whatever appointment without looking like a marathoner and of course also have less of an impact on the environment during your commute. In our opinion, mountain bikes are made for work, you want to explore, you want to get out off of the road and work up a sweat. That said, we aren’t necessarily opposed to them, just never crossed our minds.

Outside magazine, did a very nice review of a couple of the bikes and while we’re not 100% sold on the idea, we are now firmly curious."

... and now in June decides on the "best" electrics...

The Best E-Bikes of 2017:
https://www.outsideonline.com/2181391/best-e-bikes-2017

Starts:
While e-bikes have had a rocky reception in the U.S. (think: the 60 Minutes exposé of hidden motors in the Pro Tour and fears of e-MTBs tearing up trails), there is no debate about their benefits to commuters. The current crop pedal more efficiently than your old Schwinn Cruiser, use hub-based motors and lithium-ion batteries to supplement leg power and make it safer to ride in traffic, and provide a low-impact alternative to cars.

... and:
Our favorite, the Elby 9-Speed (above; $3,700; 57 pounds), was designed by a pair of automotive-industry veterans, and its sleek aluminum, one-size-fits-most, step-through frame and full battery integration offer car-like convenience. There’s even a high-powered light system.

Gazelle Orange C7 e-bicycle review – ‘Perfect for novice or cautious urban cyclists’

My commute is too short and too flat to justify the outlay, but what struck me is how useful the Gazelle might be for novice or cautious urban cyclists. If you can crank the power up to “turbo” and whizz away from impatient drivers, they’re suddenly a lot less threatening.

More on that "data bike"...

Image
(Wiki:)
The Toronto Star is a Canadian broadsheet daily newspaper. It is Canada's highest-circulation newspaper on overall weekly circulation; although it is a close second to The Globe and Mail in daily circulation on weekdays and Saturdays, it overtakes the Globe in weekly circulation because it publishes a Sunday edition while the Globe does not.

How to map a bicycle trail while riding a ‘data bike’
("The Data Bike will use a Canadian-made app to gauge the condition of bike trails in Des Moines, Iowa."):
https://www.thestar.com/news/insight/2017/06/17/how-to-map-a-bicycle-trail-while-riding-a-data-bike.html

Starts:
The Data Bike was built using off-the-shelf parts — including a Canadian-made iPhone app — to gauge the condition of bicycle trails around Des Moines, Iowa.

THE ORIGIN: The Des Moines metropolitan area, with a population of 600,000, has a 1,000-kilometre network of off-road paved trails and another 50 kilometres of on-street bicycle lanes. The Data Bike was created after Todd Ashby, the executive director of the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization — a regional transportation authority — challenged his staff to come up with a novel solution that could help local governments prioritize repairs on the aging trails.

Includes:
THE BIKE: Called the Spicy Curry and made by Yuba, the aluminum cargo bike was purchased from a local cycling shop. The bike has eight speeds and weighs 28 kilograms. It also has pedal assist, which means the electric motor will kick in when the pedals are rotating, allowing the rider to maintain a consistent speed and collect more reliable data. The bike has a range of 32 to 56 kilometres, depending on a variety of factors including how much it’s carrying and the terrain.

Breaking rules on a bike can lead to demerit points :

Starts:
Get caught running a red on your bicycle and you risk demerit points on your driver’s licence,

Yup, you read that right — it’s not supposed to happen but it does. Demerit points have been registered against law-breaking cyclists in Toronto, which can then affect driving status and insurance costs.

...and ends:
Smooth ride on an e-bike

You don’t need a driver’s licence, vehicle permit or licence plate to ride an e-bike, but you do need to be 16 or older, wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet, and keep your e-bike in good working order. Follow the same rules of the road as regular cyclists, and penalties are the same as a non-electric bike.

Why Electric Bikes are Emerging as a Popular Green Mode of Transportation:
Image

Begins:
As more and more cities around the world seek to reduce emissions, electric bikes are emerging as the ideal green solution. Electric bikes are a highly green form of transportation that requires no gas whatsoever. E-bikes are highly popular in Western Europe and green-friendly states like California. Curiously enough they are also emerging as a popular form of transportation in countries like China, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

CleanTechnica Begins Jetson Electric Bicycle Review, Stay Tuned:
https://cleantechnica.com/2017/06/18/cleantechnica-begins-electric-bicycle-jetson-review-stay-tuned/

Starts:
When I first saw the electric bicycle (e-bike) Jetson, I stopped to look again. Where is the obvious battery sticking out? Where is the obvious electric motor? Where is the obvious gearing system limiting these e-bikes to a handful of gears? What is this twelve speed bike doing here in the middle of the e-bike section?

Image

... ends:
At first feel, the Jetson feels … well, like a regular bicycle. Although it looks like a regular 12 speed, the Jetson is relatively light with discreet shape. It takes a second to confirm it is an electric bicycle.

It seems like a great e-bike in this segment — hence my interest in trying it out. At first inspection, it offers a lot of bang for your buck. We’ll see if my mind changes after a couple of weeks with it.

... and:
Jetson is still fairly new and promises to offer an impressive range of electric mobility devices that, if the quality I’m experiencing from the Jetson e-bike is anything to gauge by, should make for a fun selection of devices.

In the meantime, check out the company’s social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Interested? Some of you may already love your bikes, so we can see how a gadget like this would be enticing. Prices start at $319, which is great considering Indiegogo backers are getting a $380 discount over retail price. And it’s really not too much considering current electric bike prices. Are you signing up?

Amusing... Seen on Craigslist in Seattle "Electric Bike Wheel - retrofit - $699 - bicycles - by owner - bike ... - Seattle"
("Posted about one hour ago")
https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/bik/6182625694.html

(ESB "Search found 13 matches: +"Electron Wheel"")

Image

Ad includes:
Modify your hybrid 700cc bicycle with add an electric pedal assisted front wheel. Easily added to replace the front of your 700cc bike to make an electrically assisted bicycle. Pops in easily in one minute with an axle quick release. Helps you up those hills.

Like new condition. Comes with optional high speed charger (2 hours). I only used this unit lightly, for one summer, in 2016, and loved it. You will too. It helps ease you up steep hills with ease.

Huh. My first question (watt they usually don't mention) is: So Why Sell? :?

Pedal through your vacation on a bike tour:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/2017/06/18/pedal-through-your-vacation-bike-tour/102669354/

Starts:
The bicycle began life as a workhorse, a way for people to get around during a time when actual horses had died due to starvation during a tough winter. Two hundred years later, on the anniversary of the invention of the two-wheeled innovation, it’s become more than a means of transportation. For intrepid travelers who like their exploration with a side of activity (and some guilt-free calorie consumption), the guided bike tour has become a way to see the world up-close.

... includes:
Chris Skilling, vice president of worldwide product for VBT, which offers bike tours in more than 20 countries, adds that choosing a respected outfitter can take the stress out of planning your own two-wheeled vacation.

“The logistics involved in planning support, finding the best time and locating highlights along the way would be a lot of work,” he says. “Going with a trusted operator allows people to really come on vacation and enjoy it from the moment they arrive.”

With a VBT tour, for example, everything is provided, from a guest’s choice of bike (road, hybrid or electric-assisted), helmet, voice-guided navigation, hotels, several meals, two local guides and a support van in case a rider wants alternate transportation.

VBT?... Looks like these folks:
