eggrider compatibility w/ leafmotor controllers?

situation: i have a hauladay cargo bike w/ a 1500w rear leaf motor conversion kit and 20~ah 52v em3ev battery. it's lovely. i just found out i'm moving to london in a couple of months. i can't take a hauladay in the tube. also.. it's kind of illegal (250watt limits over there...). so i might just keep it to/from getting groceries.

so, i'm considering folding bikes (16" bike friday pakit/tikits and bromptons with rear triangle/front fork mod to accept a g3xx)

for motor looks like front g311 motor fits the bill best. imagine i would also need their grin controller. not sure whether or not it would be compatible with an eggrider v2 display.

key parameters:
- no impact to folding and hand-rolling mechanics (it seems that front hub motor is necessary to achieve this)
- i'd like a lighter hub motor this time around but still durable/reliable (hence g311)
- 52v compatible (??? not sure what controller best to permit this, also ... compatibility with display below?)
- stealthy display (e.g eggrider v2)
- PAS only
- reliable motor (would be using for regular commuting)
- target budget for kit ($1k - 1.5k)

some questions i have:
- anyone know if eggrider v2 display is compatible with grin controllers?
- recc on other motors... eg tongxin?

I wouldnt worry at all about that 250W limit in London.
If you ride your ebike with common sense, there is no need to worry about anything.
- Buy yourself a 250W holographic sticker and a 500-1kw motor
- Have the option of using strictly PAS, but also have the option of using only throttle.
- Stealthy is good! A rear motor, rear rack, rear pannier bags to hide the motor and help with the groceries.
* Remember in Europe, they go to the grocery more often, plus you are in a metropolitan city.... London. "Grocery stores" I'd assume would be everywhere.
- Choose a good motor.
For geared, em3ev's MAC motor, buy a sinewave controller from Kelly Controllers.
For direct drive, Leafs 1kw, again matched with a Kelly Controller.
Don't bother with mid drives.
- I wouldnt bother with a display, for security reasons!
- Secure your motor for security reasons!
- Hide your controller, so a Phaserunner hidden would be a great idea. They are expensive. Secure it for security reasons.

I say that because I had a battery stolen right from under my watchful eyes.
The twist ties were broken by twisting the battery. I now hide the hose clamps under black duct tape, and use twist ties for show. Takes them two seconds to take it, probably while I was getting my drink.

Maybe use an old battery, or have your current battery easily removable for when you get groceries or go to work.

Ride with common sense!

- stealthy

The Eggrider works with the KT protocol, so I doubt it would work with a Grin controller. You would need to get a KT controller. Or you could buy a Cycle Analyst display instead. Lots of non-ebikes have displays for speed, distance, cadence, etc. I don't think it would call attention to you.

All good points and suggestions. Will look for holo stickers and talk with a friend's about fashioning a lockable battery cage for my battery on my hauler... https://photos.app.goo.gl/X6WYFQubNJ1V8hBi6

Thank you all. Will think on this more.

Grin controllers do not have a display port, so they're not compatible with any display like the KT /etc are.

They have the "CA DP" plug, but that is simply battery power and ground output, one of the hall sensors output, throttle input, and shunt output wires. It's wired so you can plug a Cycle Analyst directly to the controller to get all the critical signals in and out of the controller for the CA to monitor and operate it, based on your inputs to the CA via throttle, PAS, ebrake, etc.

Regarding a "legal" system for the area, you might look over at J A G 's recent folding bike thread, built specifically to take to the EU.

I asked Grin recently regarding SW-102 and was educated as above. I went with a rear Bafang in my folder (but could replace it for the cost of the g311 shipped).

:bigthumb: good news... Peter at leafmotor doing me a solid. Presoldering xt90 to controller and bundling hydraulic sensors vs ebrake levers I don't need. Didn't realise could ask for these things... Helps this is second kit bought from them maybe.

Does anyone know who makes egg Rider display? Would like to see if that is something that could be connected to leaf's included controller somehow

Secondly... Regarding batteries. Can two large em3ev batteries be paired to function as one page battery? Or would it be safer to manually switch to the alternate battery?

Thirdly ... Extra long length hydraulic disc prebled kits... Anyone know if any cheap/decent ones? I use a tektro kit up front which is awesome but have settled for a mechanical in rear because I need a tandem length for my cargo bike.

Lastly (an update). I've resolved to just refresh/update my main commuter with a new leaf kit with smaller display, regen, and better brake set up. The folding bike will be a Brompton that I'll keep stock/unpowered so more flexible to take on tube and for air travel

Yes, as long as you charge them to the exact same voltage before connecting them.

You can buy hydraulic tubing in longer lengths and replace the tube that comes with the brakes. The bleeding kits are fairly inexpensive also or you can just pay a bike shop to install it. Most people cut the tubing to correct length on new installs anyway.

I love my Brompton, but make sure you get a bag or basket for the front carrier block. If you get the back rack option, it makes the bike more stable for rolling around folded up, but it is pretty useless for carrying panniers or cargo.

hm.. know any good references for tektro brake-hose matching? i tried this before with a tektro set and couldn't find right spec hose to match it (hence the rear brake on my bike is a normal mechanical ebrake). i still have the tektro bleed kit so would be interested in trying this out :)

hm... that opens up an idea. carry-on luggage that can be placed on the front carrier block.

Tektro is kind of an off size. There are some out there though. The spec is 5.5mm OD and 2.5mm ID.
