I liked most of the article, but I did cringe a couple of times while reading it.

They tell people to ignore manufacturer rated power levels and instead suggest that the best way to determine how much power you'll actually feel is to figure out battery watt hours to determine range. They literally jumped topics mid-paragraph and muddled multiple subjects in the process, which is less than ideal considering their target reader is completely new to the topic.

They also lean heavily toward suggesting mid drives without any real mention of their potential downsides or caveats. Again, a disservice to the newjacks.

Then they conclude the best place to buy is your LBS, followed by Amazon and possibly Alibaba. Zero mention of diy conversions afaik. This is after they began the article by suggesting you can get a turnkey bike for a thousand bucks. I mean I guess you could, but good luck finding one for a grand at your lbs, and good luck with whatever complete bike you buy for 1k on Amazon or Ali. Setting people up for failure or disappointment there a bit.

I appreciate their enthusiasm, but I do somewhat wonder how helpful the coverage really is for those completely new to the subject. I guess if it gets people interested and out doing research of their own it's a good thing, but it falls far short of being any sort of actual buyers guide on it's own and in some areas will probably cause more confusion than anything else.

It's certain that on a specialist site like this, the average regular will know lots more than a general journo new to the topic.

Actually the Verge has some most excellent writers from time to time, especially on tech, environment, privacy and other dystopian-timeline issues

but of course consistency is an unreasonable expectation these days.
