I am a complete noob on this topic so please excuse by lack of knowledge.

I am in West Michigan and this is my first post.

I bought a few of the 36v scooter batteries from Jehu, on his website I saw he has the Bafang 500w 36v Front wheels motor Hub kits

1. Is this easy to use to build into an ebike?
2. Which controller should I get?

3. Which bike should I get to build this? Should I pick one with front disk brakes?

My daughter's bike was swiped by a kind person few weeks back. I want to build this for her before school opens after spring break.
I am driving over to walmart to pick up a girlz bike.

has some good info about these motors.

If the wheel you have is a rimbrake wheel (haven't seen one yet, neither of mine are) then you can use a rimbrake fork/frame. Otherwise you should use one that has a disc brake front fork.

Make sure you get some torque arms to use with the motor at least on the non-wire-side, like the Grin Tech versions here:

of which there are many low-quality copies that are cheaper but do not work as well (generally less precisely made). And make sure you mount them like they show on that first Grin link.

The controller you link looks like it would probably work, it appears to ahve the right connector, so as long as it is wired the same as the motor is, it should be "plug and play" as much as anything ever is. However, it does not appear to ahve the "self learn" wires or function listed, which means if the motor hall and phase wiring doesn't match then it requires manual rewiring of the connector at the controller end to match the motor. (it's easier to do it at the controller than the motor). The motor cable is VERY short, so dependign on your motor cable length (very short on mine) you'll have to either put that controller right down there on the side of the fork itself next to the motor (relatively easy, but requires care in routing and securing all the other wires up the fork to the handlebars and battery case or bag), or you'll have to buy an extension cable (easiest), or splice wiring into the controller or motor cable to extend it that way (hardest).

That controller is designed to work with a display (specific to KT controllers), so to use anything other than the default settings, you'd need to buy a compatible display as well. The default settings may work fine for you, but if they don't, you'll need that display to change them.

but that one doesn't have the matching motor connector, so you'd either have to buy a cable to add to the controller to match, or cut and splice an extension like this

onto it, etc. It does have the self-learn function, so it doesn't matter if you get the order of the halls / phases correct between motor and controller.

I don't know the quality of any of the stuff linked except for things from Grin tech, which has been pretty good for the most part.
 
I just built an ebike w/ that motor.
You can search my posts, but I have a gd. choice for a controller from a store where you can get the perfect torque arm and some other little things all from the same place.
Normally I would say no suspension fork, but these TA's fit really tight and you can use two of them.

That controller is sensorless, but it works, I tried it's bigger, more powerful brother. Also, the Phase wire colors match, so you don't have to worry about that. Use 890 display.
Only disc brake w/ the Jag35 rim.

I am reading your past post on the subject, I am a bit turned off by the lack of packing and chance the wheels might come damaged.

Bike:
My daughter is short and she is comfortable in a 24inch, but the motor hubs are all for 26inch bikes.
I guess I can get a 26 inch and lower the seat to the bottom,

Front suspension fork makes it too weak for the front electric motor?

Brakes:
The cruisers with gears do not have disk brakes or mounting spot on the fork from what I can see, is this so?
I am guessing the brake caliper mounting hardware is need to adjust/match the mounting offset to the bike frame, Tektro disk brake mounting hardware is easily available?

Hub Kit:
I agree going with a kit is most cost effective.

Checklist:
1. Controller which can skip the hall sensors.
2. PAS is not needed
3. brake sensors not needed
4. Need motor extension cable that has the leads broken out so I can just plug them matching color.


Cost:
Hub $45+15
controller/display $44
Brake offset adapter ??

Alternate:
What complete kit would you guys suggest?
Maybe that is a simpler route? Like a voilamart front hub kit?

Sounds like the Bafang "Jump" is not the right motor/whl. for her. Asides from the issues you mentioned, the SWX02 is a big and fast motor.
If you search back in my recent posts, there is a thread on building a kid's ebike.

I only ride on the street and every E-Bike I have had, save one that had a steel fork, has had a front motor in an aluminum fork.
I would not do it, if I wanted a trail bike.

All the damage to the wheels I've bought (from battery clearinghouse.com) was related to me buying two at a time, and the wheels chewing on each other in the box. If you buy a single wheel, I expect the chance of damage will be much less.

If you can find a 24V controller and battery, that might put your daughter in a better power and speed range for her.

Dang, that is the one I was going to buy to save on shipping,
I just bought a single unit from them.

Ms Maruputu is 5-2 and 150lbs so an adult bike/power would be ok I am guessing.

I am stingy, and I want to keep this a value project if possible.

I read your kids bike thread, nice, after thinking through, I want to stick to a 26 women's frame (not sure which one yet)

2 reasons:
1. Her last bike walked away from our driveway
2. Kinda challenge to low cost ebike

36v - I already have 36v Li-ion batts

I need to find an ebike controller kit with all the little things I need,

Well, the Jag35 motor/wheel is a smoking deal.
Just to give folks out there an idea, I priced out what it would cost to build the same thing (except black motor) for a rear wheel mount.
Shopping around, This is about the lowest cost I could come up with (prices include shipping);
SWX02 -$160
Rim and spokes- $100
Schwalbe Marathon tire - $30
$290!
Anyhow, A bike like the Pink Wally World bike will be what you need. It will have fork that will take the Jag wheel/tire and will have frt. disc brk. I think 26 X 2.00 Schwalbe tire is too tall to fit 24" fork. Frt. disc means cheap suspension fork, but that is ok (I will explain).

The fact that the controller is sensorless is incindental(although it will save you from making a connector for the 5 Hall wires). The reason I'm recommending it is because PSW Power has the torque arms you need. They are;

Buy two, one for each side. These fit the SWX02 axle very snug and along with the parts below, make the installation safe and secure:

This hard ware kit comes "torque washers" (Cast w/ a tab), but I recommend you use the "C" washers that come with the TA"s.
I run my motor w/ over 1000 Watts, about twice what your system will be.

You will only be connecting the 3 (larger) phase wires. They will match color for color.
For throttle, I recommend a left-hand, half twist. Left-hand side because the chain-ring shifter is not used on an ebike and can be removed, the throttle will take it's place. PSW Power does not carry them, but both Amazon and Ebay have them, approx. $15. The wire colors will not match, so you will have to experiment to find what combo will spin the whl. You cannot hurt anything during this process.
Use Loc-tite on all motor mounting hardware, including TA pivots.
That is the basic build list, which is not to say more small stuff may be desired/needed, because that's the nature of ebikes :)
 
When all is done and if the bike feels too tall for her (w/ shock set to lowest), you can buy a cheap, used 24" whl and tire for the rear.

Good list except that the 15 Amp square wave controller is "Sold Out".
The alternative might be the 15 Amp sine wave controller (same price).

I will respectfully disagree about the left hand throttle. Every car, motorcycle, scooter, etc uses a right hand throttle ... might as well start training that side of the brain for that function now. Get a thumb throttle and mount in on the right.

Throttle:

My D is a leftie, I looked at walmart women's bikes (out of stock still) and most of them have the gear shift on the right side.
Will this interfere with the throttle?

PAS - I ordered it, I think this is the best feature, I did not understand the function before.
Will the PAS work with the controller I ordered?

How do I know from looking at a bike if crank is compatible with the PAS sensor mount?

Do you really want to increase the system power by a third? I was under the impression this was for young person and by ordering a 20 Amp controller instead of a 15 Amper, this is what you are doing.
Perhaps I misunderstoodI and I don't want to muddy the waters.

Sometime it is only a matter of loosening a screw sliding it [gear shift/brake] over a bit(3/4 to 1 inch).
I have been known to shorten the handle bar grip instead.

no worries, the extra amps/power won't be a problem, my neighborhood has a few rolling hills, so we are never riding at top speed.

She is used to speed but in a controlled setting she gets to zip around. Pic of her from few years back (2nd from right) on an electric kart at local course.

Questions:

1. PAS - how do I tell if the controller/LCD let's me set the level of paddle assist power?
2. Lamp and Speaker wire connections in the controller - what are these for? I am guessing the lamp is for front and rear lights? speaker?

Right hand vs left hand:
Gotcha, just move the shift thing and make room for the throttle.
I am not sure which would work, I am buying the amazon right hand twist throttle too.

I went ahead and bought the 2 pack of bafang wheels from BCH, hopefully they arrive in 1 piece, I left them a note asking to add extra packing to separate them.


So I see another ebike for moi in the future :)

holi sheeesh, walmart/target they are all OUT of bikes,

In my garage I have 2 Dahon folding bikes, I think the tires are 16 inch 8) , hmm, I spend a few minutes looking for 16 inch ebike kits, lol.

back on topic:
Front caliper frame - do I need to find a frame with front calipers so I can use the bafang calipers? Or can I remove the calipers off the wheel and use the v-brakes?

Will the existing v-brake line up with the bafang wheel? [sorry noob question, never messed with changing wheels/brakes]

FYI: I found this forum looking the Mean Well RSP and HLG reviews, I have a bunch of meanwells now after reading reviews here and use cases of how users here have been using them to charge their lithium batteries, The users on this forum are light years ahead of anyone else out there, kudos!

Motomech, I see the hlg in your sig, I have a few of those to charge my 12v batts

24v controller, do the controllers only work at certain voltage or is there a range of voltage?

I saw few threads on over voltage to get more power, what about under volt a 36v, I can build her LFE batt with lower volts, will the controller still work?

It depends on the controller. A quick look at eBay suggests that most of the cheap and available 24V controllers out there at the moment will accept 24V or 36V, or any nominal voltage in between.

A typical 36V or 36-48V controller will have a low voltage cutoff at about 30V. That makes it unusable for a 24V battery pack.
 
You can always open up the controller and change the resistor network for a different lvc, pretty easy job if you can find it, and solder out old and solder in new and figure out the correct resistor value.

I will look into building a battery with 30 ish volts to start her off,
I saw in another post that these motors will run at 48v too as long as we don't go WOT on them.

The controller having such a wide range is wonderful, I have a few 48v 15ah batts in my stash, it would be nice If I can use them too.

Thanks, I am handy with a soldering iron but struggle with small components, I need to practice soldering small items.

I just received some 6.8k Ohms resistors to over volt my HP server PS.
