Useful Temp Sticker on Ebay.

Slap one of these on the motor or controller. Yes I know it wont give you exact internal motor temps but if you know what you winding temp is and your side cover temp are this is a quick glace sticker to make an informed decisions on your riding style. It starts a 149 which could already mean that your motor is already cooking.

Nice item. on the motor cover, once the first one turned, it would be time to stop. But you have to figure in the weather. When I first started looking at heat, I came up with the in the motor thermometer using the car indoor outdoor thermometer. It maxes out at 159F, so used inside I would know I had 20-30 F to go when it stopped reading. Using an infared thermometer, I found the hub covers to be 30-40 F cooler than inside.

But reading off the cover, the temps could be 50-60F off if the weather was cool, windy, damp, etc. So I started reading the temp of the axle, which was lots more reliably 35F or so below the inside temp.

Now I just put the sensors for the cheap thermometers on the axle, tape a scrap of insulation over them, and get good readings. When the dasboard readout says 160F I know it's time to stop and cool off, since it's getting close to 200F in there. These cheap thermometers are in every kmart, wallmart, and car parts store. You could buy two, and rig a switch to look at either motor or controller temps. Or just have two on the bike. Knowing not only the temp, but exactly how fast it climbs and when is very good info to know. You need realtime feedback without stopping to know what's up with the motor temps.
