You can also sew up a bag of rice that will fit in your battery bag and throw it in the microwave before you head out- the warm rice will help keep the battery at a decent temp longer.

Q: Is there anything more energy efficient or enviro-friendly and still microwave safe than rice?

corn?

HAHA! itchynackers... probably you are NA and factoring in hydrocarbons-based transportation costs so 100% correct if corn "works" same as white rice but not native to NA. Local to me we have "natives" harvesting "wild rice" into their canoes... so, good to go?

I was actually hoping that Pb or something might be far more energy-dense/efficient but still microwave friendly...

We use wheat bags here in Oz. http://www.homelife.com.au/home+ideas/home+help/how+to+make+wheat+bags,3635

Don't use barley - it is vital to be kept as is, in the instance that it should suddenly be required for conversion to beer.

ACK!... OK, Sorry... I meant anything other than stuff that can be fermented?

After I get them straightened out http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=33965

" When mine get bent I usually just put a board on the garage floor and lay the pouch down on it with another board on top and then park my car on it for the night. Then again I live next door to a firehouse and they are used to this kind of thing from me."

on frosty days they can then be popped in the microwave and heated for a few minutes then put with my main pack to keep things nice and toasty?

Once I start using the juice from my batts a123 M1 at 2p they heat up just slightly. You need to pull more amps, so they get warm, then you don't have to worry. Yea, I know about the wind chill thing but going faster will likely warm your batts a bit and that's what really counts. :)
