How to disassemble currie throttle?
How to disassemble currie throttle?
Has anyone ever taken apart a Currie throttle from a USPD or similar bike? The throttle lever looks like it turns the pot. The wires leading to the three pins on my pot have all broken off, and I'm wondering how to take it all apart to replace the pot?
I tried pulling the lever outwards, but it doesn't budge. Failing to remove the pot, is my only recourse to get really good at soldering in tight spaces?

Re: How to disassemble currie throttle?
cannot see it but there may be a circlip on the inside where the spring is.

That looks like a self tapping screw next to the lever. Can it be removed?

Re: How to disassemble currie throttle?
I think the screw is only there to limit the range of motion of the lever.
Re: How to disassemble currie throttle?
OK, good call on removing the screw. It wasn't holding anything down, but once removed, I was able to turn the lever more, and that set everything in motion to come apart. It all happened so fast, that I'm worried about getting it all back inside.docnjoj wrote:That looks like a self tapping screw next to the lever. Can it be removed?

Now, I'm going to scrape away at the blue plastic to see if I can get enough surface to solder.
Re: How to disassemble currie throttle?
I consider myself pretty crafty and I could not get it back together. I have two I could not get back together. Good luck.

Re: How to disassemble currie throttle?
you don't need a big spring to return the throttle to stop position. use a smaller one or rubber band instead and it will be easier to reassemble. you can find the cermet trimpots on ebay too. when you get it out there will be a value printed on it.

Mine says B552 and has a shaft. I didn't see any when I searched for "5k cermet trimpot"dnmun wrote:you don't need a big spring to return the throttle to stop position. use a smaller one or rubber band instead and it will be easier to reassemble. you can find the cermet trimpots on ebay too. when you get it out there will be a value printed on it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potentiometer
cermet: ceramic metallic potentiometer

post up a picture of yours when you get it out.
if you read this you will see where they show that the B means linear:

just thought of one other thing. before removing it from the position, measure the resistance between the wiper and each end. the trimpot is single turn and may have fixed offset position and you would wanna replicate that when reinstalling the new trimpot.

Re: How to disassemble currie throttle?
I realize this is an old thread but did you (or anyone) ever find a replacement B552 5k Pot. I have looked everywhere and cannot find it.
I would rather replace the pot rather then spending $50 on the entire assembly. I've found a couple that may work with some fabbing. Usually the shaft is too short or not D-cut.....
Mine are broke off exactly like the pic above. (damn kids)
Thanks,

Re: How to disassemble currie throttle?
Newbie here. I've been trying for a few days now to understand the difference between a rheostat and a potentiometer but to no avail. I've tried to read about it on Wikipedia and even this article with a video about rheostats https://www.derf.com/rheostat-overview- ... planation/ but they don't really explain the difference in layman's terms.. Too many long wordsdnmun wrote: ↑Jan 31 2014 12:34amhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potentiometer
