On May 27:SINGAPORE - A 62-year-old electric bicycle (e-bike) rider who allegedly assaulted a 69-year-old man last Thursday (May 18) along Hougang Avenue 7 has been arrested by police.

The suspect, who was nabbed on Saturday (May 27), will be charged for a negligent act which endangers life or the personal safety of others, said the police in a statement.

According to an account posted on Facebook by the victim's daughter, known only as Hui Ying, her father was crossing the road at about 9.30pm that day when the assault took place.

Amusing to see Bianchi split their electrics into two categories. :)

Image
(Wiki:)
F.I.V. Edoardo Bianchi S.p.A, commonly known as Bianchi, is the world's oldest bicycle-making company still in existence, having pioneered the use of equal-sized wheels with pneumatic rubber tires.[citation needed] The company was founded in Italy in 1885 and in addition to bicycles it produced motorcycles from 1897 to 1967.

Electric range includes sub-categories "Manhattan" and "Trail E-MTB".

Lessee... Motors "e-Jab FS 27.5"" w/"Bosch Performance II"... Their "Ascent 27.5" Plus" w/"Yamaha PW series"... and their "Manhattan" w/"Shimano STePs".

(When in doubt, better buy three different ones... Or is one manufacturers motor/system more "urban" in design?) And watt is "urban" anyway. More "stop-and-go", my guess.

EDIT: Just checked... Their FOUR "Manhattan" models all come with the Shimano Steps Motor Unit DU-E6001.

For almost two centuries, Amherst has been educating a talented, diverse student body. Amherst’s historical “firsts” include the world’s first intercollegiate baseball game, the country’s first collegiate athletics program and the nation’s first undergraduate neuroscience program. The first (and so far only) Amherst graduate to serve as president of the United States was Calvin Coolidge, Class of 1895.

9:00 AM The Bionic Bicycle
There it rests, upright and silent in the morning twilight. It’s a state-of-the-art Specialized Turbo e-bike (pedal-assist electric bicycle) awaiting its commander. Once you activate the potent lithium-ion battery, initialize the onboard computer, and energize the powerful, high-tech, brushless rare-earth motor, this bicycle will possess the strength of three healthy humans. It will be capable of greater velocity than a cantering horse, and have enough endurance to complete a marathon with range to spare. The battery recharges in 3.5 hours at a cost of $0.15, and can be deep-cycled 700 times. During our presentation we will clarify the above engineering details. This machine is silent, swift and maneuverable both on- and off-road. It generates no emissions, carries no flammable liquids, and can be lawfully transported in an elevator and safely stored in an office building or apartment. Recall the joy and wonder of the day you first (successfully) balanced and navigated a “two-wheeler.” This modern high-quality electric bicycle will replicate those feelings exponentially. Join Henry Parker Hirschel, instructor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, to kick the tires of a Specialized Turbo, and consider if there just might be an e-bike in your future. Sponsored by the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Turns out there IS a ebike seller in Irvine CA:

(They say:)
EMOJO is he brainchild of Elaine Guo and Mario Cisneros, two business partners and long time friends. Elaine brings his experience of decades in the management and commercialization playgrounds while Mario is a motorcycle designer and product planner specialized in mass production systems.
Founded in 2013 in Irvine, California, EMOJO aims to put the consumer and the experience first, put a smile on the face of each of EMOJO rider and revives childhood memories when riding a bike meant freedom, excitement and total happiness.
Where on their site, their "Hurricane" ebike:
https://www.emojobike.com/product/hurricane/

... currently retails for $1,499... And seller says "I bought it a few days ago so it's basically brand new. Retail price is $1500 and I paid around 1640 with taxes"???

So. Maybe a "good deal" for anybuddy close to Lakewood, CA...

Is an Electric Bike Perfect For Courier Duty?
("We put the least expensive Zero Motorcycle to work"):
http://www.motorcycle.com/features/is-a ... -duty.html

Ends:
This was an eye-opening experience, as we thought the Zero DS ZF6.5 would be the perfect tool for this job, only to be proven wrong. However, Abbasi and Villegas agreed that a motorcycle like the Zero would be much better suited to electric courier duty in a city like New York, Chicago, or even San Francisco, cities far less expansive than Los Angeles, where constant throttle at high speed is the exception, not the rule.

Interestingly, Abbasi doesn’t automatically consider the Zero’s price as a negative. “For me, the cost of the motorcycle is just one factor in the overall decision,” he said. “As a business owner, I need to look at the ROI – will it save me money in the long run? Maybe. Maintenance is less expensive [than a gas bike], and so is electricity. But for now, the stress is just too great.”
(Ed: Article notes "added stress that comes from the battery gauge rapidly depleting". The word "swap" not mentioned once.)

A historic green step:
Last Monday, in commemoration of World Biodiversity Day, history was written when all 23 local environmental NGOs coalesced in a single coalition to present 10 key environmental proposals to political parties.

Despite the palpable tension and angst that suffused the Din l-Art Ħelwa premises where the meeting was held, with bouts of sparring mingled with inspired rounds of interesting proposals, getting all leaders around the same table to discuss thorny environmental issues just two weeks before the election was already a feat in itself.

The leaders made a commitment to meet up with eNGOs within the first month of the new administration to kickstart the implementation of at least some of the proposals. They will be held accountable for the pledge.

... includes:
Also featured was the need for a vision for a fossil-free Malta, incentives for bicycle use through support for electric bikes and pedestrian and bicycle-only roads, greater incentives to scrap old cars and investment in on-the-road exhaust monitoring facilities for Transport Malta.

JLL’s global news site featuring stories that explore the world of #RealEstate and its impact on the wider business world.
Goodbye cars? Why Europe’s cities are cleaning up their act:
http://www.jllrealviews.com/trends/good ... their-act/

Includes:
“Each city is different, with its own constellation of geographic, meteorological and industrial conditions,” says Franz Jenowein JLL’s Director of Global Sustainability Research. Proposed solutions are similarly varied. “We’re seeing schemes such as car-free zones, preferential treatment for electric vehicles, and pruning high emitting vehicles from the road.”

London, for example, is planning the world’s first Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ), which will initially cover the existing congestion charge zone. Slated for roll-out in 2019, the ULEZ will apply to petrol cars below Euro 4 standards and diesel vehicles below Euro 6 standards, with a daily fee starting at £12.50 for cars and going up to £100 for buses and HGVs.

The scheme is expected to cut almost 50 percent in emissions of nitrogen oxides, in 2020. However, according to Jenowein, this brings its own set of issues related to housing and affordability in the city core. “As rent in the city rises, people move to the suburbs. But when they travel back, they are faced with public transport expenses or congestion charges. It’s tricky to manage purely through markets,” he says.

In Paris, the aim is to halve car numbers by pedestrianizing the city center. A thoroughfare flanking the Seine is slated for permanent closure, and restrictions are planned for two main roads that run from east to west across the city. In parallel, mayor Anne Hidalgo announced an electric tramway to provide an emissions-free alternative along the route.
... and:
Taking cars off the roads

Some cities are going even further. Oslo is set to ban all private cars from its roads by 2019, while investing in public transport and over 35 miles of bike lanes.

Ljubljana closed its old town area to motorized vehicles back in 2007. With priority given to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport, the city center has transformed into a thriving cultural meeting point.
... etc... All smells like more sales and use of "ebikes".

With sites that generate more than 10 million sessions per month from more than 200 countries, Mother Nature Network is the world's most visited online network for news and information related to the environment and responsible living. MNN is designed for people who want to make the world a better place. Its content is engaging, non-political, and easy-to-understand and goes well beyond traditional "green" issues — encompassing topics that include family, health, home, ebikes, food, and community involvement.

E-bikes have long been disdained in the cycling community as a cop-out. When I write about them on TreeHugger, I invariably get comments like “I'm all for e-bikes for those with physical disabilities or elderly folks. But if you're able, save a little bigger piece of the environment and use your human power.”

But as the huge baby boomer cohort gets older, e-bikes are looking better and better — and they're still great exercise. A University of Colorado Boulder study monitored the cardiovascular health and aerobic capacity of people riding pedelecs, which are the electric-assisted bikes that are legal to ride in bike lanes in Europe.

The New York Daily News, officially titled Daily News, is an American newspaper based in New York City. As of May 2016, it was the ninth-most widely circulated daily newspaper in the United States. It was founded in 1919, and was the first U.S. daily printed in tabloid format.
Advocates hoping to get electric bikes legalized in N.Y. in 2017:
http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/adv ... -1.3202817

Ends:
Perry and other advocates believe Krueger and other critics are overstating the dangers and argue that electric bikes will reduce traffic congestion by getting more people out of cars and on to bicycles.

“I have never seen congestion caused by bicycles,” Perry said. “Usually congestion is caused by cars, trucks and buses.”

We acknowledge that the Watershed Sentinel is produced on unceded Coast Salish territories, specifically of the K’ómoks First Nation. Unceded means that this land was never surrendered, relinquished or handed over in any way. As settlers on this land, we are working towards better understanding how we can support Indigenous sovereignty.

It gives us great pleasure here at The Chronicle Herald to introduce The South Shore Breaker to your community. Each Wednesday we will be coming to you with an exciting mix of local news, features, sports, guest columnists and stories about fascinating individuals from across this region.

We are especially proud to strengthen our ties to a region so inextricably linked to Nova Scotia’s rich Maritime history – to the legends of “wooden ships and steel men” — bold, seafaring traditions that built fortunes on global trade and daring expeditions. Launching a new publication is not as glamorous or dangerous as sailing halfway around the world. But it is audacious in its own right, fraught with the uncertainty and risk that comes with uncharted waters.

It’s also exciting to be launching a new publication as the Town of Bridgewater begins implementing its plan for revitalizing downtown.... etc.
Live the active life in Bridgewater:
http://thechronicleherald.ca/southshore ... ridgewater

... includes:
On Tuesday, June 6 you can help the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg celebrate their newest fleet vehicle — an electric bicycle! Everyone is welcome to join in for a group bicycle parade through Bridgewater at 1 p.m. Meet on the Centennial Trail behind Most Wanted Pawn (formerly Appleberry’s) and ride together over the Old Bridge, along King Street, back over the new bridge, and up Aberdeen Street to the Municipal office where there will be a celebration including cake and refreshments.

Arenaturist dd : Electric bicycles are now available on Verudela:
http://www.4-traders.com/ARENATURIST-DD ... -24504315/

The city of Pula began with the project 'Bičikleta', a public service for e-bicycles, on July 13th 2015. Until now, e-bicycles were available on 3 locations in Pula: Giardini 2, the farmer's market and the main bus station. Placing the new location for e-bicycles on Verudela, near our hotel Park Plaza Histria, contributes towards the reduction of the usage of motor vehicles in city centre and traffic jams and it encourages sustainable development thanks to alternative public transportation services. It also promotes the tourist offer of the city of Pula.

Each of the current locations contains 6 electric bicycle stands and a multifunctional pylon which is used to inform citizens and tourists. The city of Pula owns a total of 24 e-bicycles, but the project 'Bičikleta' will continue to spread on other locations of the city.

Thanks to the mobile application 'Live traffic report' it is possible to see where each of the e- bicycles is at every moment.

Not: Heavier mass than most pedelecs places limits on battery range; no firm pricing yet; less agile handling at walking speeds.
