THE POLICE have been subjected to a lot of criticism lately, but Zohar Sukenik of Tel Aviv has only words of praise. Sukenik is a volunteer with United Hatzalah, and uses an emergency electric bicycle outfitted with first-response equipment, lights and sirens. The bike was stolen from an apartment complex on Malchei Yisrael Street in Tel Aviv on the first day of Sukkot. The theft was reported to the police, who succeeded in tracking down the bicycle and returned it to Sukenik near the end of the holiday period. She was ecstatic that it had been located and returned to her so quickly. Without it she felt almost helpless in her desire to help the sick and the injured. “The theft severely hampered my ability to help people and save lives. I want to thank the police, who invested a lot of resources to locate and return the bicycle to me.” She had to replace the medical supplies which had disappeared, or perhaps been thrown away by the thief, but she was happy to be in the position of responding to people who needed her help.

The theft was filmed by security cameras near the building. The following Sunday the police caught the suspects who stole the lifesaving bicycle. The two suspects, aged 44 and 41, were brought to a municipal court in Tel Aviv for their primary hearing.

Google's city-of-the-future to be designed for people not cars:

Google's urban-innovation outfit Sidewalk Labs has today signed a deal with Toronto to trial a future-cities concept that majors on the public realm. Cars are out, bikes are in. In one of the project's main illustrations there's also an open-to-the-street bicycle workshop.
Ends:
On the Sidewalk blog historian and author Eric Jaffe – who is now the company's editorial director – muses over the "15 innovations that shaped the city." Alongside electric motors and other technolgies Jaffe chooses the bicycle, the 19th century technology that evolved alongside motor cars.

"After bursting onto the scene in the late 19th century as a great new form of personal transportation, the bike gave rise to the Good Roads Movement, which by urging better road creation ironically made it easier for cars to conquer city streets. Only today, as cities prioritize bike infrastructure and embrace bike-share technology, has cycling started to fulfill its initial hopes of mobility freedom."

Amen to that.

Jackson Hole is a valley between the Teton Mountain Range and the Gros Ventre Range in Wyoming. For the past three seasons, Hidden Trails Motorsports, of Charleston, West Virginia, has hosted an annual racer party open to all competitors, families and friends, to celebrate the Pro Watercross National Tour.

“We have long been a supporter and sponsor of the Pro Watercross National Tour,” said Trey Frame, president at Hidden Trails Motorsports (HTM). “Deciding to host the racer party was an easy choice for us. I have been around the sport for many years. My brother Cameron and I have had some success as racers, but I guess it’s just a way for us to give back to the sport of PWC racing.”

The Pro Watercross Tour is the leading personal watercraft racing series in the United States of America and consists of an elite group of both professional and amateur athletes competing at its events throughout the summer. UWP event producer of the Pro Watercross Tour was founded in 1995 as a regional race circuit in Upstate New York with core values in mind to provide a safe racing atmosphere for its competitors in a family friendly environment.

In 1998 UWP given world qualifying races for the northeastern (Region 8) of the USA in order for competitors to qualify for the International Jet Sport Boating Association's (IJSBA) World Finals.
(Watt some sailors refer to as "sea fleas"... hehe)

Anyway, article includes:
“Every year we’ve tried to up the ante for the racer party. We put some thought into it and wanted to focus on something that would really excite the competitors. Racers always need a way to travel around the pit areas, either by ATV, UTV or bicycle,” said Frame. “Earlier this year we took on selling Haibike performance e-bikes, which are basically electric assist performance mountain bikes.”

During the party, four names were drawn, and the four racers competed for the Haibike, racing head-to-head on the Hot Wheels racetrack in the dealership. “It ended up being a really cool aspect of the event, and I think everyone enjoyed it,” said Frame. “Sammy Nehme, one of the tour’s standout Junior Ski racers, won the bike. Established in 1958, the Chestnut Hill Local emerged as a community forum and since has become an award-winning, independent weekly newspaper serving the neighborhood of Chestnut Hill, in Northwest Philadelphia PA and the surrounding communities of Northwest Philadelphia. Northwest Philadelphia is a section of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The official boundary is Stenton Avenue to the north, the Schuylkill river to the southwest, Northwestern Avenue to the northwest, Roosevelt Boulevard to the south, and Wister Street and Stenton Avenue to the east. Upper Northwest are Germantown, Mount Airy (which itself is divided into east and west), and Chestnut Hill, and Lower Northwest are Roxborough, East Falls, and Manayunk.

Starts:
Chestnut Hill Resident and self-described serial entrepreneur Brian Powell’s Eureka moment came as he was struggling to pedal his bicycle home out of Valley Green in September of 2015.

Powell had taken his bike to the city during the visit of Pope Francis, and event he thought it would be nice to experience, particularly if he could avoid driving into town. But the ride out of Valley Green, up Springfield Avenue was more than he bargained for.

I was riding back and got to the hill [on Valley Green Road] and I was gassed,” Powell recalled. “I was half way up it when some guy flies by on an e-bike. So I whistled to the guy called him back. I said, ‘What the hell is this thing?’

Ends:
With bikes up for preorder on the company site, juntobikes.com, Powell said customers will have the bikes delivered to their door pre-setup, needing only the front wheel slipped into the fork. The reason for the customer direct model, Powell said, is to keep prices down.

“Our competitors, Trek and Specialized, are asking $5,000 for their bikes,” he said. “Ours is $2220.

Powell is optimistic about Junto’s chances. He’s hoping brisk sales will lead to a factory in Philadelphia.

“We anticipate we’re going to sell about 10,000 bikes a year by 2019,” he said. “My whole life, all I wanted to do is bring Philadelphia along for a ride, and I think I’m about to do that. This is going to be a marquee brand in the city.”

Not since the days of the penny farthing has cycling been so popular in London. Not too long ago, using a bicycle to get from A to B in the city was a terrifying prospect. Yet today, with the help or organisations such as London Cycling Campaign, who has given Greater London’s cyclists a voice, the streets of London are a veritable cyclopark.
:)

Includes:
Many commuters, however, are using modern fold away bikes. These nifty, lightweight bikes, mostly made of aluminium, are easily folded and packed into carrying case. Brompton, who may not be the world’s biggest folding bike manufacturer, but considered by many as one of the best, is not only manufacturing, arguably, the best folding bikes on the market, but supply hire bikes, too.
... AND:
Staying ahead of the bike manufacturing game, Brompton has now entered the electric bike market with the new Brompton bike. The new electric bike looks just like any other Brompton folding bike, but has a 250W front hub motor and a battery bag which sits on the front of the bike.

Folding to the same size as a non-powered Brompton, the Bike has a 1.5L battery bag which also features a USB charging port for mobile devices. With a range of between 25-50 miles, the battery holds enough juice for most commuters’ journeys. With four power modes, the Brompton Electric will give assistance when you need it, or not, as the case may be. And when not in use, the bike can easily be folded and carried in a shoulder bag.

This bike, like many other, can now be purchased using cycling initiatives set up by the government. Employers, appreciating the benefits of keeping their staff fit and healthy, while offering them a genuine financial incentive, have taken advantage of tax breaks on bicycles purchases for employees and are also benefiting from employees adopting a healthier lifestyle.

http://www.govtech.com/fs/insights/Bike ... tric-.html

Starts:
In Washington, D.C., you now have the option of renting a bicycle that can be picked up and dropped off anywhere. There's no need to try and find a docking station. And the bike you rent might be powered by an electric motor, saving you the exertion of pedaling to your destination.

The nation's capital is one of several cities that are embracing the next generation in bike-sharing, in which those clumsy-looking and expensive docking stations have been eliminated, replaced by bikes that riders can find and unlock using a phone app. At least one company that offers dockless biking is renting out electric bikes as well.

Additionally, KTM representatives on stage claim the company is the largest manufacturer of full-size electric motorcycles, holding 80% of the market and selling 3,000 units world wide in the last three-years.
HAHA... "80% of the market" for "motorbike"-type bikes and maybe ONE Percent of the world market for electric bikes. Probably less. Probably a LOT less... (EG Pedego just announcing their one millionth dealer just now. So. Just how many dealers does KTM have right now... Maybe hundreds?

Klopman has also brought his dog, a Carin terrier named Laddy (no relation to Bixby), with him. He has rigged his electric bicycle with a trailer to carry Laddy along with his tent and other essentials.

Canada Moto Guide began in 1994 as a printed publication called Toronto Motorcycle Guide, which quickly became Ontario Motorcycle Guide and then morphed into Canada Motorcycle Guide in 1996 when we all discovered the Internet. The printed magazine died long ago, but the online publication was successful and is now the most popular online ebike and motorcycle magazine in Canada.
KTM has an electrifying future ahead (sort of):
http://canadamotoguide.com/2017/10/18/k ... d-sort-of/

Includes:
In a presentation at the Freeride E-XC launch (more details on that later), CEO Stefan Pierer and other KTM bigwigs shared some of the company’s plans for future electric bikes, and the path they laid out is a bit surprising.

Instead of announcing a line of high-powered electric motorcycles to assault the streets and woods in a battery-powered fury, KTM’s next step after the Freeride E-XC is … a minibike. In a move that’s entirely logical, but maybe not that exciting, KTM plans to introduce an electric minibike to replace its 50 cc lineup of kids’ bikes, called the E-SX.

After that, KTM plans to introduce a commuter-friendly machine that the execs described as a cross between a bicycle and a motorcycle (which sounds an awful lot like the Cleveland Cyclewerks FXx). After that there will be electric bicycles released under the Husqvarna brand.
:)

Ends:
But really, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. While electric motorcycle fans have been waiting for tire-shredding firebreathers ever since Lightning Motorcycles, Chip Yates et. al. went for that land speed racing craze a few years back, the models we’ve actually seen come to market are dirt bikes with performance equivalent to 250 cc four-strokes, and commuter machines. The latest news from KTM just follows that trend.

Sweden offers a 25% subsidy for electric bike purchases
https://www.treehugger.com/bikes/sweden ... hases.html

Starts:
For the next 3 years, residents of Sweden are getting a serious incentive to get on an e-bike, as the country is setting aside about €35 million per year to subsidize their purchase.

Earlier this year, we shared the news about a €200 electric bike subsidy in France, a $1200 subsidy in Oslo, Norway, for electric cargo bike purchases, and now, just a few days after writing about Stockholm's new electric bike share program, it turns out that Sweden is going all in on electrified bikes.

The new Swedish program, which is written into the country's budget as a total of 1050 million SEK (€105 million) over the years 2018, 2019, and 2020, is in effect already (as of the 20th of September 2017), with monies for the subsidies being paid out beginning the 1st of January 2018. It is limited to the purchase of one bike per person per year, and applicants must be age 15 or above, but with it covering 25% of an e-bike's purchase price, up to a ceiling of 10,000 SEK (€1000/US$1228), it's a significant incentive.

From sewing machines to bikes, Huffy has adapted to changing times:
http://www.daytondailynews.com/business ... a6x4zpUJN/

Starts:

Huffy Corp.’s CEO says the company’s success has been its ability to adapt, evolving from a sewing machine company to a modern bike brand changing to fit an e-commerce world.

Bill Smith, the chief executive of the locally-based bike brand, said only an estimated 15 percent of companies in 2020 will have been in business for 50 years or more, which makes Huffy on pace to be a rarity.

“At 125 years, we’re in the 1 percent league,” Smith said.

The company had its start as Davis Sewing Machine Company but started moving into making bicycles and by 1905 the company was producing 600 bikes per day making it the largest bike maker at that time. For comparison, Smith said in August as Huffy prepared for busy season, it produced 25,000 bikes a day at its factories in Asia.

Since our founding in September of 1963, The Independent has been dedicated to giving Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, and Sunol readers the news they need to be in-the-know about what's going on in the Tri-Valley region.
(Wiki:)
Dublin is a suburban city of the East (San Francisco) Bay and Tri-Valley regions of Alameda County, California, United States. Located along the north side of Interstate 580 at the intersection with Interstate 680, roughly 35 miles (56 km) east of downtown San Francisco, 23 miles (37 km) east of downtown Oakland, and 31 miles (50 km) north of downtown San Jose, it was named after the city of Dublin in Ireland. Dublin is the second fastest-growing city in the state of California, behind only Santa Clarita.

The East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) is a special district operating in Alameda County and Contra Costa County, California, within the East Bay area of the San Francisco Bay Area. It maintains and operates a system of regional parks which is the largest urban regional park district in the United States. The administrative office is located in Oakland.

As of 2015, EBRPD spans 120,000 acres (49,000 ha) with 65 parks and over 1,200 miles (1,900 km) of trails.
E-Bike Pilot Program Underway:
http://www.independentnews.com/communit ... e9379.html

Begins:

This past July the East Bay Regional Park District announced implementation of a one-year E-Bike pilot program. The pilot program allows electric motor-assisted E-Bikes on three paved Park District Regional Trails, the Contra Costa Canal Regional Trail in Contra Costa County, the Alameda Creek Trail in Alameda County, and the Iron Horse Trail in both Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. E-Bikes will continue to be prohibited on all other Park District trails.

The pilot program is now underway with signage in place on the trails covered. The one-year pilot program will run through September of 2018.

Outreach efforts are also underway. As part of the pilot program Park District staff will be gathering information and feedback, including performing user counts, monitoring usage, and conducting surveys on the trails covered by the pilot program.
