Hehe... Seems that BMW idea for elevated roadways (riding in a plastic bubble) "has legs"!
Image
(Wiki:)
Digital Trends is a technology news, lifestyle, and information website that publishes news, reviews, guides, how-to articles, descriptive videos and podcasts about ebikes, technology and consumer electronics products. With offices in Portland, Oregon, and New York City, Digital Trends is operated by Designtechnica Corp., a media company that also publishes Digital Trends Español, a Spanish-language version of the site, and men's lifestyle site The Manual.

The site offers reviews and information on a wide array of products that have been shaped by technology. That includes consumer electronics products such as smartphones, video games and systems, laptops, PCs and peripherals, televisions, home theater systems, digital cameras, video cameras, tablets, and more.
BMW imagines elevated tubes for speedy, comfortable ebike commutes:
https://www.digitaltrends.com/cool-tech ... mmutes/#/2

Image

Starts:
For residents of most major cities, it’s no fun riding a bicycle through the busy streets. As if all the fumes from the passing cars, buses, and trucks isn’t enough to be dealing with, you have to have your wits about you the entire time to avoid ending up underneath one of the aforementioned vehicles.

While some of the world’s cities have made a real effort to cater for cyclists — Copenhagen in Denmark always springs to mind, or Portland and Minneapolis in the U.S. — many don’t have the space, funding, or even interest in making life easier for those who prefer two wheels to four.

If BMW had its way, things would be different — very different — for city cyclists.

The German automaker’s growing interest in ebikes has led it to explore solutions for those who prefer to scoot about town sitting on a saddle, or perhaps standing on a scooter or skateboard.

It proposes a network of elevated bike paths inside tubes specifically for people on ebikes and other mobility machines relying on electric power. BMW calls its concept Vision E3 Way, which stands for elevated, electric, and efficient.

You may have already come across elevated bike paths on your travels, but BMW’s design would be enclosed to protect cyclists from rain, and also climate-controlled to ensure a comfortable environment through freezing winters and sticky summers. In addition, a solar-paneled roof would generate power for the network’s night lighting and climate control system.

Might remind some of the Morlocks of the future... "elevated bike paths inside tubes"?

Boost for electric bikes in Budget
("But are electric motorcycles really a viable alternative yet? Visordown's about to find out."):
http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-new ... kes-budget

Starts:
ELECTRIC bikes got a boost in Wednesday's Budget in the form of a £200m investment commitment in charging infrastructure. But are the vehicles themselves anywhere close to offering realistic replacements for our petrol-powered bikes yet?

I'll be finding out over the next two weeks when I go cold turkey on petrol and borrow a Zero S for what will be the first UK test of the updated 2018 model.

It now charges up to six times faster, giving a claimed 85 miles for every hour plugged in, while maximum claimed range on a combination of roads is 150 miles. You can charge it at a domestic socket and it makes a claimed 60hp and 81lbft.
Hehe... "charging infrastructure"... Dunno about UK electric outlets, but in the USA/NA "The maximum allowed by the electrical code for a standard North American wall outlet is 12 amps, which is 80% of the 15 amp circuit breaker trip point." Not sure re max. amps in UK where "standard" is 230 Volts (frequency is 50 Hz).

So dunno about the UK again, but some of us are surrounded by millions and billions of outlets as "charging infrastructure".

Top 5 2018 road bike trends
("What trends are we expecting to see in a new year of cycling?"):
http://www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/arti ... nds-51273/

Starts:
Next year’s bikes are going to be stiffer, lighter, and more perfect than ever before. Or are they? Here are your top trends for road bikes in 2018.
Includes:5. E-road bikes
You knew it was coming, so don’t shoot the messenger.

Some of you will insist that a bike with a motor is automatically a motorbike. Literally speaking that is of course true, but the law tends to think differently. In most countries a pedal-assist bike counts as a bicycle, but anyway, we digress…

It remains to be seen if e-bikes with drop bars will ever go mainstream, but we’re certainly seeing a whole lot more of them.

Manufacturers including Giant, Bianchi and Focus have all entered the game, along with numerous smaller names.

Some are little more than regular road frames with some extras grafted on, but others such as the Focus Project Y hide their dirty secret incredibly well, and also manage not to weigh as much as a small car.

We don’t think e-bikes will ever replace the leg-powered variety, but we’re delighted about anything that gets more people on two wheels and lets them stay there for longer.

Did we miss anything? Let us know what’s got you excited for 2018 in the comments.
 [C]omments will be fun to watch/see.

BMW and Chinese University Design Cycle Roads for e-Bikes
https://sanvada.com/2017/11/23/bmw-and- ... r-e-bikes/

Includes:
The proposal comes as a result of the collaboration between BMW and Tingyi University in China to design free cycle-ways. Its implementation would see the reduction of traffic jams on some of the major cities-especially the populous ones. Furthermore, BMW acknowledges that the idea is not driven by the increased number of bicycle users but the need to smoothen the traffic situation in metropolitan cities.
"Tingyi University in China"? ... doesn't appear on the "internet radar"/Giggle Search... :|
The ultra-modern cycle paths will encompass futuristic technology that includes an AI-driven traffic management set to oversee that no collisions are experienced. How will this be achieved? Well, the roads will be fitted with automated cameras to monitor the motion of the bikes and scooters. An automatic speed limit of up to 15.5 kilometers per hour shall be set.
Computer? Set bike speed to Sleep Mode.

But I also find myself strangely longing for hills to climb - so we headed for Arthur’s Seat. The road to near the summit would normally be a challenge - but you hardly notice the ascent on an electric bike. The Electric Bicycle Kit EZCO Is A Turnkey Solution:

Includes:
The electric bicycle kit ECZO is a do-it-yourself (DIY) that should fit just about any mountain bike. And the good news is that it’s a powerful little beast.

Got yer vid on YT? ... yup:

... and:
The fun part of the project was in matching the right battery to the correct motor. In the end, ECZO decided to build its own motor, build its own battery management system (BMS), assemble the battery cells into packs, create their own controllers, and create the control panel, hardware, and software. Not bad for a two-man show. But it eventually meant growing the team to 3 full-time people and 3 part-time engineers with a designer in order to meet the quality standards they set.

The result is a highly tuneable system. It is purposefully left open to be tweaked, but only to a certain point. It uses the same CAM Bus normally found in cars. The BMS controls every cell, the temperature, and the general state. This system reminded us a lot of the original AC Propulsion eBox, where you could check every individual cell in the car.
8)

Suspect writer is referring to the Controller Area Network (CAN bus)...

... AND:
You will be able to order the ECZO e-bike kit as of January 2018.

There is a strong sense of community in the Warwick district, and the Leamington Observer is proud to have been at the heart of the community for over 25 years. We live in a beautiful area, with the stunning award-winning gardens of Royal Leamington Spa, which is one of only a handful of towns in the country allowed a ‘Royal’ prefix having been granted it by Queen Victoria who was so impressed with the town when she visited. Neighbouring Warwick and Kenilworth also have much to be proud of and boast world-renown historic castles.
(Wiki:)
Royal Leamington Spa, commonly known as Leamington Spa or Leamington, is a spa town in Warwickshire, England. Following the popularisation of the medicinal qualities of its water in the eighteenth century, in the nineteenth century the town experienced one of the most rapid expansions in England. It is named after the River Leam which flows through the town; the town's name is often abbreviated to Leam by locals.

The town comprises six electoral wards: Brunswick, Milverton, Manor, Crown, Clarendon and Willes. The total population for those wards in 2011 was 49,491.
Boris Bikes could soon be available in neighbouring town:
https://leamingtonobserver.co.uk/news/b ... ring-town/

Starts:
‘BORIS bikes’ could be wheeling their way into Stratford.

Stratford District Council was this week set to discuss whether a public bike hire scheme – like that operated in London and nicknamed after former mayor Boris Johnson who introduced them – should be provided in the town centre.

It would enable people to rent a bike from various docking stations at points such as the railway station, park and rides and tourist attractions, and allow them to return it at another point.
Includes:
The Transport Strategy reads: “The London bike hire scheme has generally been considered a success and this model could be replicated within Stratford to enable visitors and residents who do not have one to make journeys by bicycle.”

The cost would be covered by a contractor, but if electric cycles were introduced – to support less-able cyclists – the cost would have to be met by the council.

Focused primarily for guitarists and bassists, The Gear Page is a discussion forum for musicians passionate about music, gear, ebikes and life.
Hehe... and " Today at 3:49 PM" username Motterpaul (Messages: 8,587, Joined: Dec 16, 2010, from Encinitas, SoCal) starts a new forum thread Edjumacate me on Electric Bikes:
https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index ... s.1887456/

I want to start cycling again for exercise, but I live in a hilly area, so I am thinking an electric motor assist bike would be a good answer to keep me on the bike, and not hate it because to the terrain is too challenging around here.

So - when I look on Craigslist I see a LOT of electric bikes selling used for like $2500. But lately I am seeing new ones, even folding (a bonus for me so I can transport it by car) on Amazon brand new for $600 to $1000.

Question - are they getting cheaper due to more demand, or are these Amazon bikes just cheap, useless versions of what I really need?

I have already learned some about them - such as watchout for homemade ones (where the weight is not well distributed, etc).

What I need to know is this - on these new bikes, what should I look for in a battery sizze (wattage, composition, etc), frame and especially cost.

These appeal to me for style & price. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_...t ... r+Plus+CX1

I just have a hard time believing they can be this affordable when three months ago you couldn't touch an electric bike for under $1500. Are they going down in price, and are the new ones as good as the old ones - maybe even better

Tech Tent: Tencent and electric bikes:
http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-42114880

Starts: On this week's Tech Tent we find out about the Chinese company's plans for global expansion and hear how one of its main products is now on show in a London museum. Plus - are electric bikes the real game changers in city transport?

Goes on:
China's social media superpower

Anyone who has been paying attention over recent years will have noticed Facebook becoming one of the world's most powerful and valuable companies, with an extraordinary and sometimes malign impact on the way we live.

But in the West at least far fewer people will have noticed the rise of Tencent. Yet this week, for a while, the Chinese tech giant surpassed the valuation of Facebook as investors reacted to another sparkling set of results.
... and:
Supercharging e-bikes

Suddenly it's becoming conventional wisdom that electric vehicles are the way forward if cities are to deal with a crisis of congestion and air pollution, but could it be bicycles rather than cars which are electrified first?

A number of cities around the world are already backing the idea, but the cost of a new electric bike is beyond most people, and while you can get kits with motors and switches that turn any bike into an e-bike, they too have been rather expensive.

Now a young London-based inventor thinks he can bring down the cost.

Oliver Montague has created the Swytch bike, a cheap e-bike kit which has roared past its $50,000 (£38,000) target on the Indiegogo crowdfunding site.
Ends:
Mind you, delivering on that sort of vision has proved difficult for some crowdfunded projects.

On our visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum we came across another hi-tech exhibit, the Zano mini-drone. This project turned out to be Europe's biggest crowdfunding failure and is in the museum as a reminder of how lofty ambitions can fall to earth.
