https://www.bikebiz.com/news/if-design-awards-2018

... and:

Cagiva to return as an electric bike maker
("The Italian motorcycle brand will be resurrected this year, with sales commencing from 2019."):
https://www.autocarindia.com/bike-news/ ... er-407731#

Starts:
Fans of the Italian motorcycle brand, Cagiva, will be delighted to hear that the company is set to make a return this year. However, this time around, it will debut as an electric bike maker; gone are days of the Ducati V-twin-powered offerings. Interestingly, the company is expected to showcase models by the end of this year – with a probable unveil at the 2018 EICMA motorcycle show – and begin selling them by early 2019.

Cagiva will mark MV Agusta’s entry into the electric two-wheeler market, with the models expected to be mid-capacity and sit somewhere between a regular electric bicycle and electric superbikes. MV Agusta, CEO, Giovanni Castiglioni, was quoted saying that he believes in electric and that there is great potential. He also said they are investing in lightweight fun bikes that will be compact bikes and off-road orientated.

ACK!

Image

Editor’s Comment: Parliamentary electric bike meet asks entirely the wrong questions:
https://cyclingindustry.news/editors-co ... questions/

Starts:
Yesterday in the House of Parliament’s committee rooms those from in and around the electric bike and cycle to work scheme network met to discuss a topic which should have (and needed to given the hour time limit) borne quick fruit. On the agenda was a discussion on where the electric bike fits into the UK’s transport picture.

The answer will be obvious to the vast majority working in the bike business. Quite simply electric bikes are bikes for everyone, if you can afford them, that is.
"those from in and around the electric bike and cycle to work scheme network met to discuss..."

Includes:
The Green Commute Initiative is unsurprisingly doing a roaring trade on electric bikes north of £1,000 – some 80% of its business by January of last year.
8)

... and:
There is a strong and perhaps justified feeling among independent bike dealers that the current state of affairs with the cycle to work scheme does little to benefit them. Certainly the scheme has been diluted down from its heyday and more recently has pained many bike shops who believe that traditionally supportive providers are revising their approach to suit big business. For them, this legislative proposal is met with indifference, if not outright annoyance.
[Sigh]

Marks article includes a fun graph...

Taipei Cycle Forum’s Agenda Includes Keynote Speakers from Siemens and Amazon:
http://www.bike-eu.com/shows-events/nie ... n-10133174

Starts:
TAIPEI, Taiwan – Next week’s Taipei Cycle Forum, taking place on March 23 and 24 in Taichung, Taiwan, features an impressive line-up of keynote speakers. It includes bicycle industry insiders as well as highly respected specialists from other industries. Like from Siemens and Amazon.
Includes:
E-bike trend

Next to ecommerce another major topic of the 2018 Taipei Cycle Forum is the e-bike trend. The bicycle markets are getting electrified as e-bikes are on the march. But electric bikes have to comply to a variety of safety standards as well as type-approval regulations. How all these rules look like in the United States and in Europe are presented by two specialists: Larry Pizzi of Accell North America and People for Bikes as well as Eugène Moerkerk, representing the Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry (CONEBI).
GO Larry!

... and:
Latest on e-bike dumping complaint

The Taipei Cycle Forum 2018 also includes the latest on the e-bike dumping complaint which has been lodged by the European Bicycle Manufacturers’ Association last September at the Europe Commission. Bike Europe’s chief editor will update the Forum’s participants and will also speak about the possible consequences for the Taiwan industry in case the EU decides to enforce an anti-dumping duty on e-bikes imported from China.

Uber and Lyft pedal in as Beijing fuels data driven bike-sharing craze:
https://www.eyefortravel.com/revenue-an ... ring-craze

Starts:
Bike-sharing has been welcomed by government as a fix for urban traffic and pollution, but there are challenges. Sally White reports

As happens to all disrupters, bike-sharing’s roaring success is getting it into trouble. Just as online transport giants Uber and Lyft are elbowing their way in, the plans of some companies to leave their app-controlled bikes all the way around the world are hitting two obstacles: vandals and city authorities.
[Sigh]...

Includes:
The advent of more expensive electric bikes is likely to increase bike companies’ surveillance of their assets. Wired, the emerging technology magazine, notes an ‘explosion’ of American dockless, electric bike-sharing systems. It is with New York-based e-bike company Jump, which has just raised $10 million, that Uber is trialling bike-sharing. Sensitive to rising resistance, Jump plans to set up ‘charging centres’ in business and residential areas at which the bikes should be parked.
Hehe... Anybuddy know how many 120volt AC electrical outlets there are in NY City?

... and:
Electric bikes require a much higher level of care and maintenance than that given to the cheap Chinese bikes - in Seattle, LimeBike has trained an operations team of 40 people just to travel around the city, swapping batteries when they get low. The sums involved in London’s docked-bikes give some clue to the cost of running a successful scheme with regular maintenance. Santander London Cycle Hire, its 11,500-plus bikes and over 750 stations, according to the Financial Times, generates around £11 million from hires, £6 million from sponsors and gets over £3 million of subsidies.

Hehe... ESB "Search found 13 matches: Lohner"... again:

Image

Lohner Goes From Being A Classic Vintage Carmaker To Making Retro Electric E-Bikes:
https://cleantechnica.com/2018/03/13/lo ... c-e-bikes/

Starts:
Although the name might not sound terribly familiar to most, the Lohner company made its mark early two centuries ago and once again in 1888 when it hired Ferdinand Porsche to built his first car ever, an electric car. Today, Lohner is introducing an electric bicycle (e-bike).
Includes:
Lohner made the L125-Roller scooter in the early 1950s, and today it’s looking into the world of e-bikes.

This is an unusual e-bike, no doubt about it. Its design is unconventional, and although it takes a well-used conventional electric motor and battery layout once used by the likes of Pedego, the company did spend time rearranging the aesthetics of the e-bike. It softened the exterior with an encompassing line swooping around it highlighting the seat and giving it this retro look.

Where Lohner innovates, at least to our knowledge, is that the e-bike is actually a two-seater, meaning it might be closer to a moped than an e-bike. It frees up a much-needed space in the front of the frame with a compartment on the top of the frame that can hold 8L (2.11 U.S. gallons) and where you can put things away. Of course, it is lockable.
Article comes w/a YT vid:

and notes:
Although it has two seats, the performance of the Lohner e-bike is relatively modest. A 250W motor with a peak of 600W gives it a nominal torque of 12 Nm with peaks of up to 40 Nm. The e-bike is powered by a 46V, 11Ah, 396 Wh lithium battery and includes 8 gears (before those crazy dudes on that Endless-Sphere site get done with it...)
Image

Ends:
At 34,5 kg (76 lbs.) the Lohner e-bike is a hefty bicycle with a cool retro look with a maximum cargo weight of 150 kg (about 330 lbs.). The Lohner e-bike isn’t available yet, but the company is taking preorders right now.

A trio of Vancouver non-profit bicycle shops has partnered with the city in a unique program to recycle old bikes and donate or sell them for a low price to people who can’t otherwise afford to buy a two-wheeler.

Kids, students and temporary foreign workers have all benefited from the program that quietly began in July with the aim of keeping bikes dumped at the city’s transfer station out of the landfill and into the hands of people who can fix them.
Includes:
On the day of the Courier’s visit to the depot, which is on Yukon Street near the Marine Drive Canada Line station, three bikes had recently been dumped, including a small bike in decent shape suitable for a five-year-old child, an older pink Norco women’s bike in need of some repair and a very fixable Kona electric bike with shocks and disc brakes.

Sushil, an energy engineer, is an IIT Bombay alumnus from Mumbai, India. He’s currently getting a master’s degree in Sustainability at HEC Paris, a university in Jouy-en-Josas.

In 2016, Sushil started a cause in India called “The SunPedal Ride” to raise awareness about solar energy. What is The SunPedal Ride? I’m glad you asked. This is an initiative whereby he rode a solar-powered electric bicycle around India and held public events and conversations to help raise awareness about solar power and electric vehicles. The ride was a Guinness World Record for the longest journey on a motorised bicycle as well as a Limca Record for the longest journey on a solar powered electric bicycle. Covering news, politics, arts and entertainment in Columbia, S.C., since 1987.
Columbia is Launching a Bike Share Program:
https://www.free-times.com/news/local-a ... 61344.html

Starts:
Call it Two Wheel City.

Columbia City Council has entered into an agreement with Canada’s Bewegen Technologies to start a bike share program in Columbia. The program, which will allow residents and visitors to rent bicycles, ride them, and return them at stations throughout town, currently is in the planning stages and will likely launch in August or September.
Continues:
The initial phase of the program will include 15 stations or hubs, which will be located at spots around the city center, and 135 bikes. The second phase of the project, for which a timeline has yet to be identified, would expand the program to 25 stations and 225 bikes.

Of the 135 bikes Bewegen is planning for the first phase of the project, 85 will be regular bicycles, while 50 will be electric-assisted pedelec bikes, which have a motor that gives cyclists a little extra push up an incline.

So said a 40-year-old female migrant worker in Beijing surnamed Yang. Liu suffered severe concussion and died in hospital five days later. Tongzhou District People's Court sentenced Yang one year in prison on March 12. At the trial, Yang expressed her deep regret about what had happened and apologized to Liu's family. She said she would get a job to earn money to compensate Liu's family for their loss after she gets out of prison. (Source: The Mirror)

Rohloff introduces electronic shift system with “widest transmission ratio” available :
https://cyclingindustry.news/rohloff-in ... available/

Starts:
Rohloff is shortly to introduce a new electronic shifting system which claims to have the widest transmission ratio (526%) of any evenly spaced bicycle transmission (13.6% increments) on the market.

Initially an OEM spec unit, the E-14 is at present designed to pair with Bosch-driven electric bikes, from which the system draws its power. However, the Shifter-Unit is backward compatible to all existing Rohloff Speedhub models. The unit replaces either the internal or external shifting device and is mounted to the axle ring.

P. Yashwanth along with Shaik Asif and Akhilesh built a foldable electric bike. “We took 25 days to build it and it cost us `25,000. The bike is completely foldable and can be carried in an elevator or boot space in a car. One can travel at a speed of 25 km/h and it will cost you only `2 paisa per km,” says Yashwanth.

Eco Made Easy with OlySunrise Compost Concierge:

My life is purposefully fun and easy. I’m enthusiastic about incorporating environmentally positive activities. For example, I seeded 1,700 oysters in from of my home Henderson Inlet. Their daily water filtering is beneficial for the Sound. My joy goes up another notch when it involves food. Then I met Heather Wood. She pulls it all together while holding a vision of zero waste in the world. Her business, OlySunrise Compost Concierge, makes recycling your food waste a breeze.

All you have to do is put your carrot tops, banana peels and related items into the provided bucket. The bicycle-powered service will pick up your bag, transport it to a local composting hub and clean your container. When you are ready to incorporate some of that rich material into your yard or garden, it’s delivered to your door.
Includes:
You might imagine that Wood spends a lot of time on her bike. It’s true, she does. In less than a month her ten-year-old daughter, who was helping, clocked in over a hundred miles. Plans for an electric bike are in motion. The business expects to employ riders to service various areas. Right now over 100 pounds per day are being transported.
