The Mercury News (formerly San Jose Mercury News), often locally known as The Merc, is an American daily newspaper published in San Jose, California, in Silicon Valley. Published by the Bay Area News Group, a subsidiary of Digital First Media, The Mercury News has the 5th largest circulation out of American newspapers.
Watch out, Bay Area, the e-scooter revolution is coming to a sidewalk near you :
https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/04/11/ ... -near-you/

Starts:
SAN JOSE — When Harman Ghotra woke up late, dashed out the door and realized he had four minutes to get across campus to deliver a paper to his statistics professor, the calculations started spinning through his mind. Walk to class: Eight minutes. Run? Too much trouble.

Then there it was, parked at the intersection of 4th Street and San Fernando, an electric scooter, the latest craze in urban transportation that is suddenly multiplying around Bay Area downtowns.

“I was running late,” said the 21-year-old computer engineering student, “so why not?”

With a quick click on an app and a flip of the kickstand, he was whizzing across the San Jose State University campus — and arriving with two minutes to spare.

Lessee... these daze the "medias" are using words like "revolution"... and "apocalypse"... and "wheelmageddon"... FUNily enough, I'm OK w/just revolution.

The "last mile" seems large these days...

Includes:
Bird — founded by former Lyft and Uber exec Travis VanderZanden — got off to a rocky start when it launched in Santa Monica in September and was charged with a misdemeanor by December for failing to secure proper permits and ignoring citations to remove its scooters from sidewalks. It settled with the city for $300,000 by February. One scooter rider there was injured in a collision with a car.
Meanwhile, from a year ago...

Recent Spate of Fatal Crashes in Santa Monica a Sobering Reminder of Gaps in Street Safety:
http://www.santamonicanext.org/2017/04/ ... et-safety/

Includes:
According to the 265-page Pedestrian Action Plan, which takes a comprehensive look at walking in the city, obstacles to increasing the number of people who walk, and strategies to improve safety, Santa Monica averaged about 100 reported injury collisions involving pedestrians every year between 2001 and 2012.
Somebuddy should DO SOMETHING about those tiny scooter thingees!

Dundalk is the county town of County Louth, Ireland.

'Super' Simon aims to reinvent the wheel for tomorrow's bikers

Simon Chan the founder of the Super Wheel (second from right), along with Oisín (second from left) and two Carlingford locals during a recent test cycle through the Louth village.

... and:
Dundalk-based entrepreneur Simon Chan, says he would like to see his ingenious invention, the Super Wheel, become a standard component for all bicycles in the future.

“The technology used in most bicycles today is over 200 years old. I think the Super Wheel is the future. It should be a standard component for all bikes,” says Simon.

The unique wheel, which will be launched on Kickstarter this summer, can be fitted on to any type of bicycle. It utilizes weight to energy conversion technology to propel a bicycle forward with minimal effort, even on sharp inclines.

Creator Simon explains: “Super Wheel was developed as the alternative to e-power assistance to aid cycling efficiency. It is completely powered by the user.
... and:
The weight of the user is converted into power assistance. The Super Wheel has no battery,” Simon said.

Another advantage of the Super Wheel is that it weighs just under 10 pounds – which means it can be easily transported by people such as commuters.
 Looking fwd. to maybe seeing Simons bike in the Endless Super Duper (TM) series!

Lamborghini has always been an exclusive brand, the automaker that showed Ferrari how it’s done in the 1960s. And although the Raging Bull of Sant’Agata Bolognese doesn’t do grand tourers anymore, its V10- and V12-powered supercars are up there with the best of them.
... and:
With the know-how of Italtechnology, Lamborghini took the veils off a range of e-bikes at its museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, the company founded by Ferruccio now offers electric bicycles!

“The result of over five years’ research,” the two e-bikes are “true masterpieces of advanced technology.” Designed for “demanding clientele,” the e-bike range consists of two models for the time being. One of them is a mountain bike, the other was developed with speed in mind for on-road use.

... and:
Salt Lake City (often shortened to Salt Lake and abbreviated as SLC) is the capital and the most populous municipality of the U.S. state of Utah. With an estimated population of 190,884 in 2014, the city is the core of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, which has a population of 1,153,340 (2014 estimate).

Starts:
SALT LAKE CITY — Parker Winchester's busy days begin early and require a lot of walking on the University of Utah campus.

A preschool teacher and elementary education major, she says she walks two or three miles on the large campus between her classes each day.

"It does take me a while to get around," she explained.

Winchester was one of many students, professors and community members test-riding e-bikes on campus Wednesday as part of the school's U. Bike Electric program, which started on March 26 and will run through May 26.

Through the program, which is a partnership between the university and Utah Clean Energy, anyone affiliated with the U. can sign up to receive a discount on an e-bike.
Includes:
An e-bike looks like a traditional bicycle. However, it has three things a regular bicycle doesn't: a motor, battery and drivetrain, making it easier to ride up hills or against wind...

The Santa Cruz Sentinel is a daily newspaper published in Santa Cruz, California, covering Santa Cruz County, California...

Santa Cruz is the county seat and largest city of Santa Cruz County, California. As of 2013 the U.S. Census Bureau estimated Santa Cruz's population at 62,864. Santa Cruz bike share program meets opposition on city’s Westside:
http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/lifest ... s-westside

Starts:
SANTA CRUZ >> As Santa Cruz puts the final touches on launching its partnership for a citywide bike share program, the pending addition of dozens of electric bicycles to the city’s coastline paths has raised concerns among Westside neighborhood residents.

On Tuesday, the Santa Cruz City Council approved a second round of permits for its partner agency, bike share vendor Social Bicycles, to install some 27 hub stations for 250 bikes under the JUMP brand by May. The pay-per-use bicycles, which will be a visible orange in color, are priced for short-term trips at $2 for 30 minutes, then 7 cents per hour, compared to day-long rentals available at typical brick and mortar bike rental businesses, city officials have said.

5000 year old resident Reed Searle, describing himself as among those who are “so bloody old that they can’t get out of the way of a bicycle,” said he has been walking West Cliff Drive for the past 30 years. He was among several speakers and numerous letter writers who asked the council to defer or outright scrap plans to place some of the bike stations on or near West Cliff Drive. One of the more hotly contested proposed bike rack locations, at Woodrow Avenue and West Cliff Drive, was not a part of Tuesday’s vote, due to an appeal set to go before the city Planning Commission in coming weeks.
Can't make more "infrastructure" of course... gotta leave lots of room for the larger vehicles...

Here's an idea:

You frequently run across stories about cities voting on whether to allow ebikes on trails, parks, etc. If we had a separate topic for advocacy and encouraged all the ES members to email the officials involved, we might be able to help pass legislation to allow ebikes in those areas. And, once a jurisdiction passes an ordinance allowing them, we can cite that to other places deciding the same issue. It could be like a snowball effect.

I'm not really blindly advocating the bike/scooter sharing systems like Bird, as those are commercial interests and not always well managed.

Hi fechter... Good thought... One aspect maybe? Re "stories about cities voting"... Suspect political animals may respond "better" to folks from their own city/jurisdictions... aka voters that maybe put them into office (and can remove also)? "Second tier"-only responses maybe from folks still knowledgeable about similar circumstances in other jurisdictions/cities. Yes? Suspect at least by now folks could mine this ES thread about similar (English-language) situations in other parts of the world. I'd suggest pointing out that folks "in charge" maybe shouldn't be putting up barriers to "eco-friendly", "energy-efficient" transportation... maybe throw the "aging" and "disabled" thingees in there too. ;)

https://www.forbes.com/sites/tjmccue/20 ... bf7231fff0

Starts:

China is expected to remain the most important market for electric bikes worldwide, as 34.3 million units are predicted to be sold there. That leaves almost six million units for the rest of the world and a majority of those are in Europe with a small, but growing market in the USA.

Into Electric Bikes? Check out this post on SONDORS and the e-bike market.
Sondors E-Bike Offers Glimpse... for those with maybe "bad eyes"... or are squinting... or something.
(Hint: Number One SONDORS topic on online forum threads? Upgrades.) Oh. Right. It's not upgrades... it's "customizing"...

Government Incentives for E-Cargobikes:
https://spycycle.uk/government-incentiv ... argobikes/

Starts:
E-bike sales have been boosted in several countries thanks to Government Incentives. Now the German government goes one step further with government incentives for e-cargobikes.

Our friends at Carla Cargobikes in Berlin were delighted with the news that the German government has introduced incentives for e-cargobikes which can be up to 30 percent of the value, and up to a maximum of 2500 Euros. German buyers can apply for this financial support now, but the funding will not be available till after the parliamentary recess in the summer of 2018.

I'd suggest pointing out that folks "in charge" maybe shouldn't be putting up barriers to "eco-friendly", "energy-efficient" transportation... maybe throw the "aging" and "disabled" thingees in there too. ;)
True, I agree, but if a politician gets 1,000 emails, they are not going to read them all in detail and it is not always obvious where a person is from by their email address. They are more likely to just look at the statistics like the % for vs. against. Members who live in the right jurisdiction can make a point of it, otherwise don't tell.

Dutch bike paths increasingly dangerous, safe traffic assoc. says:
https://nltimes.nl/2018/04/13/dutch-bik ... assoc-says

Starts:
Bicycle paths in the Netherlands are increasingly dangerous, according to safe traffic association VVN. Currently some 65 thousand cyclists end up at an emergency room every year, the association said to the Telegraaf.

VVN blames the increasingly dangerous bike paths on the ever-growing group of electric- and race cyclists. According to the association, these cyclists create considerable speed differences on the bike paths. The number of racing cyclists who sustained a serious injury more than doubled over the past eight years, from 2 thousand to around 5 thousand, the association said.
  8)

Obviously missing high-speed bike paths...

Plenty of room if some wanna take over any car lanes?

EDIT: Wonder watt the break down is re emergency room visits, ebikers vs "race cyclists"? (Hint, which are easier to "speed up again", so "easier" to slow down when prudent.) Also, watt had brought more folks to climb aboard two-wheelers... in other words, with growth in the use of electric assist, aren't more emergency room visits inevitable?

Government scraps electric bicycle incentive due to opposition:
http://www.helsinkitimes.fi/finland/fin ... ition.html

Starts:
The Ministry of Transport and Communications has revealed that the government has decided not to allocate funds in its next year’s budget to its much-discussed incentive programme for the promotion of the sales of electric bicycles.

The government was considering earmarking a total of 16.3 million euros for the 30-month programme, which would have entitled the buyers of new electric bicycles to an incentive of 400 euros.

Its proposal, however, was met with vehement opposition from economists and bicycle retailers alike, with many experts calling particular attention to the size of the purchase incentive.
 Yah. Bet all the "bicycle retailers" that sell electric bikes were whining.

EDIT: It's a good thing electric traction is so darned addictive. (See Travels as Entertainment)

The Sunshine Way

Sunshine State News was born from a desire to cover a side of issues and stories that was absent in the news landscape, to fill the vacuum.

At Sunshine State News, we believe this is the right time to focus on the inextricable relationship between politics and business in Florida and how it affects the success of our state. To that end, we strive to cut through the jargon and speak in a fresh, no-nonsense way to an audience of lawmakers, lobbyists and strategists, to Florida’s job creators and economy protectors, in fact to all Floridians who expect their leaders to make common-sense decisions and set lofty, yet attainable, goals.
Proactive 'Safe Water for Walton' Launches Its Website:

Starts:
Safe Water for Walton, easily one of Florida's busiest nonprofits since it registered as a 501(c)4 less than six months ago, has already racked up an impressive list of successes. And now the group has introduced a website to give it a bulletin board and a community-friendly presence.

The group says it’s time for citizens to help celebrate and be part of creating new projects. It has a “Safe Water for Walton ‘READY TO RIDE!’ Membership Drive,” sponsored by Pedego® Electric Bikes 30A -- a drawing for two new bikes. The value of each Pedego® electric bike is $2,295.00.

An eight-year-old girl was left with a fractured skull and memory loss after being hit by a food delivery rider in the city centre.

Holly Hill was struck by a cyclist on New George Street at about 3pm on Monday.

Her parents, who say the rider worked for Uber Eats, are now calling for a bicycle ban in the city centre.
