How Indian Transport Will Ride on The Growth of Bicycles ?
("Without a doubt, bicycling is the quickest and efficient mode of travel for longer or shorter trips."):
https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/307193

Starts:
The urban population in India relies on a personalized form of transportation like a car, two-wheelers for daily travel. Despite online cab aggregators like Ola and Uber promoting the idea of carpooling, the metro cities are still dealing with the issue of traffic menace. In India, few startups are working to fight the problem of pollution and traffic congestion.
Includes:
Gurugram-based Mobycy, a disruptive bicycle sharing technology platform is also working on a similar mission by providing urban commuters an alternate mode of transport. The startup is helping people cover a short distance without any wait at a very nominal cost.

In a chat with Entrepreneur India, Akash Gupta, Founder, Mobycy shared the benefits of bicycling and the future of Indian transport industry.

Making Bicycle a Norm:

"A big transportation disruption which is waiting to happen in India. A big project on e-vehicles is going to start soon from the government's side. Electric vehicle maker Mahindra is also working with the government and there are so many e-rickshaws and e-vehicles that startups are launching against such disruption happening in the different parts of the world. Surely, the next disruption will happen in next 12-24 months by bicycles and e-bikes," said Gupta adding that very soon India will see the bicycles everywhere and within 12-18 month this will become a norm.

SLOG
The Morning News: LimeBike Goes Electric, Starbucks Goes Blonde, Georgia Goes Down :
https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2018/0 ... -goes-down

Starts:
LimeBike ups the ante: with electric bike (“e-bike” if you’re in the know) rollouts starting next week. A continued part of LimeBike’s plan for dockless bike share world domination, the e-bikes will cost $1 to unlock, plus $1 for every ten minutes of riding—a little bit pricier than the current $1 per half-hour it’s rocking now. The added cost comes with the added benefit of having to do little to no exercise on a contraption built for you to do exercise. The e-bikes will have pedals still but it will also have a electric assistance capable of giving a 14.5 mph boost. It’ll be like dad never stopped pushing you when you first started to ride a bike.

But, the ferocious war for bike share dominance is still waging: as Spin also plans on rolling out an e-bike. It has all the same bells and whistles (minus actual bells and/or whistles) as the LimeBike e-bike but will cost $1.50 per 15 minutes. Spin’s e-bikes aren’t rolling out in Seattle just yet but will be probably be implementing the model soon.

While ofo promises free rides amid rumors of poor working conditions: The Chinese bike share giant has promised free rides on all of their garishly yellow bikes for the entire month of January. The company is looking to expand its fleet in Seattle (it’s currently capped at 4,000 bikes) but may face difficulty since a disgruntled worker took to Reddit to spill the the tea on ofo’s employment practices. Ofo uses the Millionair Club Charity — a charity that gives homeless people employment opportunities — for all of its daily labor. The employee alleged that ofo does not provide workers safety equipment, breaks, and there are no intentions of promoting people to positions where they could receive a livable wage. Let’s see how well free rides for January overshadows the taking-advantage-of-Seattle’s-homeless scandal.

The other change is in pricing. Lime-E bikes will cost $1 to unlock plus $1 per ten minutes of use. So unless e-bikes are used for much longer trips than the existing bikes, the cost for most trips should be comparable to pubic transit fare.
... plus then two press release exerpts... :)

Engadget is the original home for technology news and reviews about ebikes and stuff. Since our founding in 2004, we've grown from an exhaustive source for consumer tech news to a global multimedia organization covering the intersection of technology, ebikes, gaming and entertainment.
LimeBike adds e-bicycles to its dockless sharing service
("A not so mean green machine."):
https://www.engadget.com/2018/01/09/lim ... ss-rental/

A "not so mean green machine"? Watt???

Ends:
LimeBike operates in a bunch of US locations including Seattle, Miami, and the greater San Francisco bay area. (The company also expanded to Zurich and Frankfurt, its first European markets, last month.) The Lime-E will be added to the company's existing fleet later this month — a useful differentiator, perhaps, from the countless other bike-rental services that have been popping up around the world. Electric-assist bikes aren't for everyone, but if you want to be just a little healthier — while still getting around at a decent pace — this could be an option worth considering.

New ebike design reduces risk of accidents
("A prototype ebike adds features that increase stability, making it safer for older riders"):
https://www.springwise.com/new-ebike-de ... accidents/

Starts:
Cycling, and particularly the use of electric bikes, is becoming increasingly popular among older riders. However, this trend has also led to an alarming increase in accidents. Recently, Dutch police warned older cyclists of the dangers of switching to electric bikes after a large increase in the number of ebike deaths in that country, with nearly 90 percent of those killed aged 60 or above. Now, a consortium led by engineers at the University of Twente, aim to make riding an ebike safer with the development of an electric bicycle that can prevent elderly people from falling. The Smart Assistive Bicycle, dubbed SOFIE, is designed to increase stability.

KIMBERLEY BULLETIN
(Wiki:)
The Kimberley Daily Bulletin is the local daily newspaper of Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada. The Daily Bulletin, published Mondays through Fridays, bills itself as "Canada's smallest daily newspaper". Circulation 5,000 per day, together with Cranbrook Daily Townsman...
... and:
Kimberley is a city in southeast British Columbia, Canada along Highway 95A between the Purcell and Rocky Mountains. Kimberley was named in 1896 after the Kimberley mine in South Africa. From 1917 to 2001, it was the home to the world's largest lead-zinc mine, the Sullivan Mine. Now it is mainly a tourist destination and home to the Kimberley Alpine Resort, a ski area and Kimberley's Underground Mining Railway that features a 750-foot-long (230 m) underground mining interpretive centre complete with operational 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge railway equipment. Recreational pursuits include world-class skiing, ebiking, snowboarding, snowmobiling, fishing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, hiking and golfing on championship golf courses. The city has the largest urban park in Canada. At 1977 acres (800 ha), the Kimberley Nature Park is the largest incorporated park in Canada.
Not your average bicycle
("Seniors Helping Seniors seeking funding and support for the purchase of a Trio Taxi Push Bike."):
https://www.kimberleybulletin.com/news/ ... e-bicycle/

Includes a vid from YT:

... and text:
“This is not your average bicycle,” explained Councillor Darryl Oakley. “It’s very heavy duty, as you can tell by the cost, it’s very expensive. Seniors Helping Seniors have been working with Kootenay Mountain Works to get access to a distributor. They vetted out a whole pile of distributors for certain brands that are not going to work in Kimberley because of the mountainous terrain. So they found this one brand that’s made in the Netherlands that is very heavy duty. It’s got super heavy breaks and it’s geared properly. It also has a really strong electric motor to get them around, back and forth to the Pines etc. It’s also designed to allow folks to move relatively easy from a wheelchair onto the seat.”

According to Kootenay Mountain Works, the regular retail on a Trio Taxi is $10,300. [ ]

“We would need to order them with a 500w Bionic motor to work in Kimberley,” said Trevor Knight of Kootenay Mountain Works. “I am a Bionic dealer so warranty would be good with that option. The motor would be more money than the quoted price, but they are not sure how much, as nobody has asked them for that setup yet.”
(Apparently, in the first International Electric Taxi Push Bike Olympics, some drunken seniors were fined for whipping their "pets" to pedal faster...)
