The electric LimeBikes are launching in existing markets this month – though it is unclear when they would be coming to the Durham area. A spokeswoman for LimeBike didn’t have any specifics to share on the roll out of the new bikes.
“If Durham is interested in having e-bikes, we'd be happy to start a conversation with the city to discuss the possibility of bringing them there,” said Mary Carolina Pruitt, a spokeswoman for LimeBike. “We see Lime-E, along with our existing fleet, as an integral part in solving that first and last mile transportation challenge.”
It is unclear when the release of Spin’s electric bikes will be. Efforts to reach the company were unsuccessful.
The Durham Transportation Department said that it would begin conversations about bringing both Spin and LimeBike’s electric-assisted bikes to the Bull City.
“We also just recently learned that LimeBike (and Spin) were launching an e-bike option,” Bryan Poole, a bicycle and pedestrian planner for Durham, said in an email.
“We will be discussing the possibility of bringing these to Durham with both of the companies. E-bikes have the same rules/rights as other bicycles as long as they are less than 750 watts and cannot go more than 20mph powered solely by the motor.”

“We had doubled our business every year for the past three years,” he said.Haibike, a maker of electric mountain bikes that relocated to Denver from California a year ago, is backpedaling out of Colorado.
Ken Miner, director of sales for Haibike USA, said he let go of his six staff members on Dec. 31 at Haibike’s North American headquarters in southeast Denver.
The decision came from Accell North America, Haibike’s parent company, which is restructuring after the loss of business from major players such as Dick’s Sporting Goods and Sports Authority, according to Bicycle Retailer.
“Because of that, we’re streamlining business and putting everything under one group umbrella,” Miner said.
Accell will consolidate Haibike’s customer service, sales and administrative operations with its other brands in Simi Valley, California. In addition to Haibike, Accell’s brands include Winora, Raleigh and Diamondback.
“Haibike is being integrated into our U.S. E-bike Competence Center, located in Simi Valley, California, to improve service to our Haibike dealer customers that purchase our other brands, Raleigh Electric and IZIP eBike,” Larry Pizzi, president of Accell’s e-bike division, said in an email.
Haibike moved from Simi Valley to Denver last spring, partly because of the state’s positive reception for e-bikes and the state allowing them on more paths and trails. Miner said the state did not give Haibike any tax incentives to relocate.
Miner, who joined the company three years ago, said Haibike in North America was profitable in 2017.

http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2018/01/ ... iency.htmlWe do go on about energy efficiency, and how important it is to increase fuel economy and go net zero on our buildings and homes. Yet as Kris de Decker notes in a new article in Low Tech Magazine, we are bedazzled by energy efficiency but we are not really getting anywhere. He suggests that efficiency isn't enough; instead, we have to think about sufficiency:
Where I think Kris is wrong is that we don't have to all freeze in the dark in our long johns in tiny rooms. We need better, efficient LED lighting, much better insulation so that we don’t have to get used to lower temperatures and thermal underwear; perhaps electric bikes for those who find regular cycling too hard. But it is important to realize that in principle, Kris is right. Increased efficiency won’t do it on its own; we have to change the way we live and the way we get around. It is all about sufficiency.

found 215,000 ebikes imported into the USA during the 12 months of 2017, with an additional 15,000 thought to have
been built from parts by various assemblers.
Knowing that we do not find all the imports, from past experience, we add 10% as a likely margin of error.
This brings the totals to 263,000 for 2017.
However, the brands reporting strong growth are the ebike specialist brands, primarily. We notice modest
growth among the traditional bicycle brands.
The number of entities importing ebikes has grown significantly - approximately 600 entities in 2017, as
compared to 135 in 2016.
BRUSSELS, Belgium – Booming e-bike sales in many EU markets is proving to have a major downside. Heavy pressure on sales of conventional bicycles. This is clearly reflected in the EU import. Eurostat figures for the first three quarters of 2017 show that big shifts per country are taking place. They indicate a hard drop in higher-priced trekking, road and mountain bikes sales.

This week, half a year after the city started offering a permit program for dockless bike share, the SFMTA issued its first permit for a non-Ford Go-bike share bike:
From the SFMTA release:
The permit has been offered to JUMP Bikes, a program of Social Bicycles, which offers an electric stationless bike share service. JUMP Bikes has demonstrated a commitment to San Francisco’s priorities of providing a safe, equitable and accountable bike share system and is the only company to have fulfilled the requirements of the SFMTA’s stationless bike share permit application.
Motivate was supposed to have an exclusive arrangement to operate bike share in San Francisco. However, with the introduction of JUMP-style bikes, which are GPS-based and require no docking stations, it became possible to offer bike shares without having to mount dedicated bike share stations on city property.
