Kirkwood electric bike company makes biking easier:
http://www.decaturish.com/2017/06/kirkw ... ng-easier/

Starts:
Ryan Hersh just opened the Edison Electric Bike Company in Kirkwood, but his love of bikes and transportation goes way back.
Includes:
On June 10, Hersh opened Edison’s second location at 1619 Hosea Williams Dr. in Atlanta’s Kirkwood community. He also has a location at Ponce City Market.

Edison Electric Bike Company is the only local shop that assembles its electric bikes from ground up, in-house, according to the website.
http://edisonbicycles.com/

Ends:
According to Hersh, 80 percent of people who test out a bike automatically go and buy it. If you want to give one a try, check out one of Edison’s two locations

The Sun had the largest circulation of any daily newspaper in the United Kingdom, but in late 2013 slipped to second largest Saturday newspaper behind the Daily Mail. It had an average daily circulation of 2.2 million copies in March 2014. Between July and December 2013 the paper had an average daily readership of approximately 5.5 million, with approximately 31% of those falling into the ABC1 demographic and 68% in the C2DE demographic. https://www.travelblog.org/Europe/Slove ... 70597.html

Starts:
On this, our final full day of the tour, we met and made a quick ride up to Bled Castle, which sits on a promontory above the lake. It is a medieval castle which was first recorded in 1011. It has, naturally, been rebuilt and added on to during the centuries, but what stands now is pretty much how it looked in 1700. It was a steep hike up and into the castle, and our tour began with a series of three short films -- one on the geologic history of the region, then the history of the castle and region, and finally on the growth of tourism in Bled since World War II.
... includes:
We elected to rent bikes, rather than walk down to the villa, which was on the far side of the lake from our hotel. We not only rented bikes, but we rented electric bikes. This was a new concept to me. I thought it would be moped-like, but instead it was a traditional bicycle with a small electric motor below the seat. As you pedaled, the electric motor would recharge and, in turn, provide you which a motorized push. So you pedaled as usual, but the bike would accelerate very quickly and then continue for a while, even if you did not pedal. It took some getting used to, but we all ended up having a blast.

Korea JoongAng Daily is the English language version of the South Korean national daily newspaper JoongAng Ilbo. It is one of three English-language daily newspapers in South Korea, along with The Korea Times and The Korea Herald.
Electrifying the commute : Motorized bikes and boards are increasingly popular as a mode of transportation as prices for diverse devices fall:
http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/new ... ticle.aspx

Starts:
Walking, driving or even cycling to work may soon become a thing of the past now that more people are hopping on motorized scooters or two-wheel hoverboards.
:)

Includes:
More people are choosing single-person electric vehicles as their main mode of transportation. The global market for so-called personal mobility devices has grown, with annual sales exceeding 50 billion won ($44.5 million). According to social commerce company WeMakePrice, sales of electric unicycles skyrocketed 98 percent in May, year-on-year. The hike in sales is much bigger when it comes to motorized scooters and boards (both hoverboards and kickboards included), as the company saw a 163 percent increase in the sales of scooters and a 471 percent jump in the sales of motorized boards.

As more people like Kim purchase electric vehicles, prices are rapidly falling. These vehicles now cost around 1 million won, a sharp drop from the 10 million won or so customers paid for a Segway, the two-wheeled electric vehicle, about 16 years ago. Since then, more brands have entered the market, offering diverse options for consumers. Some hoverboards are even available for 300,000 won.
Currently (ebiker joke) 300,000 Korean Won = about $265 US. :)

A 48-year-old driver was arrested for causing death by rash act, police said.

Small-scale Doppler effect to help cyclists stay safe:

Starts:
An extremely sensitive radar that can detect when different parts of people's bodies are moving at different speeds could help drivers avoid collisions with vulnerable road users such as cyclists.
... includes:
'For example, a bicycle bell that rings as an auditory reminder to truck drivers to avoid a collision,' said Prof. Pietrantoni.

Kitting out bikes, especially electric bikes, with better avoidance systems could also help.
... and ends:
'Some cyclists are quite reluctant to have expensive technology on their bike, but other types of consumers who are using electric bikes are more willing to accept this type of safety-related tech,' said Prof. Pietrantoni.

Image

(Currently - ebiker joke - 6500 Brit. Pounds equals about US $8,220.)

There's that word "normal" again. Hehe...

Long-ish review article ends:
While I've only had a short time on the bike so far, I've come away impressed. As you'd expect, get the basics right (geometry, power delivery) and you can easily create a bike that, on first impressions at least, could be set to be the best e-bike on the market. I'm looking forward to nailing down my experiences soon.

The bikes will be available later this summer, most likely August or September in Europe, and a little later in North America.

First Look: Powerful Pedaling With Defiant ‘Fat Electric’ Bike
("Fat tires and a powerful electric-assist motor make this bike one of a kind.") [Cough Cough]:
https://gearjunkie.com/fat-electric-bike-review-defiant

About the Defiant Electric Fat bike... already spotted in ES Newz... years ago:
https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewt ... =3&t=51513

Image

Gear Junkie Guy concludes:
I’d recommend the Defiant e-fat bike to those looking to spice up their commute and have some fun, without necessarily breaking a sweat, on trails.

And for those in snowy climes, the extra power is sure to make commutes and singletrack euphoric.

With singletrack, one audience is anyone with compromised physical ability. The “assist” on the bike will enable anyone with bad knees or other issues to keep up with younger and healthier riders.

For those curious, try one out. Demo an e-fat bike at your local bike shop and see what all the rage is about. Just don’t be surprised when you can’t control the big, ear-to-ear smile sure to happen.

Deutsche Welle ("German Wave" in German) or DW is Germany's public international broadcaster. The service is available in 30 languages. DW's satellite television service consists of channels in English, German, Spanish, and Arabic. DW is a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
Opinion: The future belongs to bicycles
("As the car industry boomed for decades, the bicycle's importance as a means of transport dwindled. But DW Sports' Joscha Weber is expecting a pedal power renaissance 200 years after the bike's invention."):
http://www.dw.com/en/opinion-the-future ... a-39212601

Includes:
E-bikes and pedelecs, another variation of motorized bicycles, have rejuvenated the old bicycle. Small electric motors provide 250 to 500 watts of additional pedal power. That means a retiree can ride up a mountain as fast as someone like me, who covers 12,000 kilometers a year using my own legs. It is no wonder that some 1.5 million e-bikes are sold each year in the European Union alone. The number has risen tenfold over the past decade. The bicycle, a vehicle that prosperous societies look at as a relic of a time before cars, is back again. Now, 200 years after Karl Drais rode through the German city of Mannheim on his strange-looking machine, the bicycle is still an important means of transportation. Some statistics even show it is the most widely used means of transportation in the world. And there is good reason for its popularity to continue to soar.

... and username "nvanrider" wanders into the lion's den:
Image

Image
http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=13081403

His first post there starts:
Hi Everyone,

I'm new around here (so don't be too hard on me!). An engineer/inventor in Vancouver (Canada) has started a company to start producing a commuter vehicle - an enclosed reverse tricyle with electric-assist pedal drivetrain (including a reverse gear). They have named it the "Veemo". Vancouver has the worst traffic congestion in Canada/US after Los Angeles. The City has agreed to treat this machine as a bicycle under the law, thereby allowing the vehicle to use Vancouver's expanding network of bicycle lanes.
... and ends:
The whole idea is to get people out of their cars, but will it attract urban drivers or cyclists? Would you (or other cycle commuters you know) switch from cycling to this type of vehicle?
... with first reply there:
Not a fark. Seriously.
... from one TWIT there that would rather co-exist with large, fast, (mostly empty) expensive vehicles operated by amateurs. Watt currently apparently has "30334 Posts" there since joining in April, 2010. Going by the username dumbdad.

Electric bikes are a great way to travel, says one reader.

Gavin (letter writer) starts:
Well I think the fossil-fuel car days are numbered just like the dinosaurs were all those years ago. Electric is the future, embrace it.

As for the traffic woes, stop moaning about it and do something about it yourself like get rid of your old dinosaur of a car and get an electric bicycle, even when the traffic is gridlocked there's always room for a bicycle to whip through.
Gee... Hope Gavin didn't mention dinosaur TOO much.

Five bike share trends enhancing customer interaction and solving operational challenges:
https://cyclingindustry.news/five-bike- ... hallenges/

Starts:
It’s small wonder that bike share programs have proliferated in recent years. The benefits are obvious: bike share provides a readily available and affordable means of transport, a way to cover the commute’s “last mile”, a great alternative to carbon-emitting, congestion-creating vehicles, and an excellent way to stay healthy.

At SoftWheel we love how operators and municipalities are constantly churning out creative ways to establish bike share as a viable urban transportation option. Here are 5 trends that seem to be “all the buzz” in bike share this year:
... includes:
2. Enter e-bikes!

What’s better than a form of transportation that’s easily available, inexpensive to use, and can complement other means of urban transportation without polluting cities? Enter the electric bike share. E-bikes provide an attractive solution to problems which have plagued many a bike share program in past years. They cater to a range of riders (from experienced to occasional) as the power assist enables them to travel uphill, on rough terrain, or in extreme weather conditions. With riders able to stay on their bikes longer, less docking stations are needed – good news for operators and cities alike.

New technologies are making it easier than ever to maintain and operate e-bike fleets. Etc...

It was smooth, comfortable—and the deer barely noticed.
