COLUMN: On Yer Bike - Are electric bikes cheating?:
http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/headli ... cheating_/

Starts:
STEVE Unwin, Cyclox member and a volunteer with Wheels for All Oxford and Broken Spoke Co-op, gave an inspiring talk about electric bikes to a packed house at one of Cyclox’s regular meetings.

One of the questions he posed was ‘Are Electric Bikes Cheating?’ This is a question that is frequently asked. Isn’t it cheating to get on a bike that is electrically assisted? Aren’t they more like mopeds or scooters than bikes?

Steve convinced us that this is not the case.
:D

Stay tuned for next weeks column... Are Cars Cheating?

Dribbble is an online community for showcasing user-made artwork. It functions as a self-promotion and networking platform for graphic design, web design, illustration, photography, and other creative areas. It was founded in 2009 by Dan Cederholm and Rich Thornett, becoming publicly available in 2010. It is one of the largest platforms for designers to share their work online competing directly with Adobe-owned Behance — the latter being the largest. The company is fully remote with no central headquarters.

Dribbble became a part of Tiny, a family of internet startup companies, in January 2017.
Cowboy App:

Starts:
Cowboy is the next generation of electric bikes. With the live dashboard, navigation, GPS tracking, removable battery and ride stats, the accompanying app makes your ride more than just a ride. It becomes a whole new experience.

We worked closely with the amazing Cowboy team, to give to their electric bike an identity, a tone of voice, a digital and print presence and an app that allows connecting the bicycle to the internet.

We designed the app, put hands on the branding, packaging, photography, print materials and worked on the design for the website.

Gas scooter sales decline in Europe as electric bicycle and motorcycle sales soar:
https://electrek.co/2018/05/11/gas-powe ... torcycles/

Starts:
Gas-powered scooters, much like fine wines, thin cigarettes and fresh baguettes, are one of those quintessentially European sights. But now that might be changing (for scooters, at least). And EVs could be the cause.

New figures report that sales of gas-powered scooters and motorcycles dropped by 6.1% in the first quarter of 2018, as compared to the same period in 2017. The largest decline in sales has been attributed to smaller scooters and mopeds below 50cc.

Sales of scooters and mopeds under 50cc have dropped by 40.2% over the same period. In France, which is the largest moped market in Europe, sales dropped even further by 41.5%.
Includes:
During the same period, sales and registrations of electric mopeds, motorcycles and quads in Europe increased by a massive 51.2%. The total volume of these two-wheeled EV sales is still much lower than gas-powered scooters, but the trends indicate that small EVs are catching up to their ICE-powered cousins.
:)

and:
Even more impressive, sales of large electric motorcycles, which are classified separately due to their higher power levels, showed a 118.5% increase compared to last year. In France alone, large electric motorcycle sales have leaped 228% higher than last year.

AND:
While many gas-powered motorcycle riders appear to be switching to electric motorcycles, as represented by the large increases in sales each year, the smaller increases in electric scooter sales may be a result of riders switching to electric bicycles.
 ... w/a chart/graph:

AND:
The bigger question is “when are Americans going to wake up to two-wheeled commuting?”
(Is their such a thing as "too much" fun?)

Starts:
May is National Bike Month, when advocates tout the benefits of getting around on two wheels and ask more people to give that commuting option a try. But if you’re still a bit wary of all that pedaling, there is the option of electric bikes, or ebikes, which are a great fit for Boston, according to a new report.

GenZe, an electric scooter and bike company out of Silicon Valley, looked at cities across the country where ebikes “offer the perfect local transportation option for commuters,” and Boston ranked in the top 10.

Montgomery County is a county in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2010, the population was 38,124. The county seat is Crawfordsville [Ed: aka "C'ville"). The county has 11 townships which provide local services.
Moore stopping in C’ville:

Starts:
Jacob Moore is making a pit stop in Crawfordsville today! Montgomery County's own, Moore has raised national attention with his cross country bicycle journey to raise money and awareness for his organization, Scholar Shop Africa. Moore recently appeared on a radio show in Missouri, KSLQ 104.5.

Proudly, The Paper of Montgomery County has been following Moore since the very beginning, as he set out on his 5,000 mile cross country journey. Moore's determination to bring awareness and raise money to continue the efforts is relentless. He has camped outside, injured his wrist and had more than a couple of mechanical issues along the way. However, his perseverance is inspired and he is now on his way to Crawfordsville and will spend the weekend here at home before he sets out for the last leg of his journey.

:)

Ends:
Moore began his ride in Seattle, Wash. He rode down the Pacific Coast to Los Angeles on an electric bike called the BeachFlyer, riding all the way to Los Angeles, Calif. Moore then traveled southwest, riding on the beautiful Route 66 to Tulsa, Okla. Then, heading north to Kansas City, Mo. to attend a wedding of a dear friend. From Kansas City, Moore traveled toward home to Indiana just in time for his 10 year high school reunion and in time for mothers’ day. Moore will have traveled 550 miles in six days by the time he has reached Indiana. Moore plans to spend this weekend visiting with family and friends. Afterwards, he will continue riding east all the way to Washington, D.C. From there, he will cycle his way to New York for the completion of his journey.

WEST MAUI - Bike-sharing programs and electric bikes (e-bikes) are a hot topic these days. Already being called the future of transportation, bicycles and e-bikes are creating a quiet revolution - people are rediscovering clean, quiet fun. By some estimates, U.S. sales skyrocketed nearly 70 percent in 2016 alone, and there's no sign of a slowdown.

Lee Chamberlain from RideSmart Maui, Kahana, says that with an e-bike, you can easily maneuver through the Maui traffic in a safe, green and fun way.

Scooter company Lime is planning to deploy ‘transit pods’
("Lime’s plan is to build an enclosed, electric vehicle that could hold one or two people, resembling a smart car or a deluxe golf cart."):
https://www.thestar.com/business/tech_n ... -pods.html

Starts:
Over the last several months a handful of startups have dropped hundreds or thousands of electric scooters on the sidewalks in cities like San Francisco, Austin and San Diego, allowing anyone who downloads an app to unlock and ride them across town for a small fee.

It’s a radical — and controversial — experiment in urban mobility. But scooters could be just the beginning.

Lime, a company that runs sharing services for scooters, pedal bikes and e-bikes, is developing a new type of vehicle known internally as a “transit pod.”

The concept is in the early stages and the design is still in flux. But Lime’s plan is to build an enclosed, electric vehicle that could hold one or two people, resembling a smart car or a deluxe golf cart. The vehicle wouldn’t be a car, exactly; it’s not even clear whether it would have three or four wheels. But it would drive in normal street traffic, and could hit a top speed of about 64 kilometres an hour, said Brad Bao, Lime’s co-founder and chairperson.
 Wonder if their "transit pod" will be easy to pedal? Sorry if old news...

Commute Week: Last year New Zealand imported a massive 20,000 e-bikes and that number is likely to grow exponentially. But what do you need to know before you buy one? Russell Brown has the lowdown.

If you think you’re seeing more e-bikes on the road, you’re not wrong.

In 2014, according to Statistics NZ, there were 3000 e-bikes imported. In 2016, the number had jumped to 13,000 – and last year 20,000 e-bikes landed. Every sign is for the trend to continue, or even accelerate, this year. The surprising thing is that the company that triggered the growth isn’t even in the cycle business.

The Napa Valley Register is a daily newspaper located in Napa, California. The paper began publication on August 10, 1863.
... and:
Napa is the largest city and the county seat of Napa County, California. It is the principal city of the Napa County Metropolitan Statistical Area, with a population of 80,011 as of the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in California's Wine Country, after Santa Rosa. Napa was incorporated as a city in 1872.
Napa County students use scientific method to stand out at science fair
Starts:
Using research skills, the scientific method and maybe a little help from mom and dad, students from across the county put their skills to the test Saturday during the Napa County Science Fair.

More than 60 student projects were on display, including a portable phone charger made with two 9 volt batteries that won sixth-grader Isaiah Ruiz first place in engineering for his grade level.
Includes:
Aidan Machado and Julian Robin, seventh-graders at St. John the Baptist Catholic School, took first place in the engineering category for their grade level with their electric bike.

According to their research, an electric bicycle can be built by taking a regular bike and adding a motor, a linkage from the motor to a wheel or the pedals, batteries, a throttle and a motor controller, or “brain.”

“My purpose was to see if I could build an electric bike that could reach 20 miles-per-hour (without peddling), Machado said. After building the bike mostly from things they already had at their houses, the boys took it for a spin in the park. They fell short of their goal by 5 mph.

“We thought we could add a higher voltage battery … but didn’t want to destroy the tires,” Machado said. That is, at least not before the science fair. “We didn’t want to bring half a project.”

They’ll be testing the electric bike later, seeing if a higher voltage battery will give them more speed.

... and:
“It’s pretty simple and it works well,” he said. Although you can buy electric bikes, Machado said that it’s more fun to build it and much less expensive.

Starts:
Electric bicycles or pedelecs are already mainstream and a growing number of people are attracted by this hassle-free means of personal transport.

Most good bike shops are offering a growing range of e-bikes alongside their pedal-powered cousins and as the selection on offer gets larger, sales in this segment are ballooning.

The story is the same in many countries, like, for example, Germany where a large rise in e-bike sales in the space of just a year saw a total of 720,000 e-bikes bought in 2017 – an increase of 19% over the year before.

Wired is a monthly American magazine, published in print and online editions, that focuses on how emerging technologies like ebikes affect culture, the economy, and politics.
The Vehicle of the Future Has Two Wheels, Handlebars, and Is a Bike:
https://www.wired.com/story/vehicle-future-bike/

Starts:
What’s the shiniest, most exciting new technology for transportation? Well, there are plenty of candidates! We’ve got the self-driving car and drones big enough to carry people. Elon Musk is getting ready to bore hyperloop tunnels. When it comes to moving humans around, the future looks to be merging with sci-fi.

But from where I stand, the most exciting form of transportation technology is more than 100 years old—and it’s probably sitting in your garage. It’s the bicycle.

Includes:
Want even more inventiveness and innovation? Behold the next phase arriving in a few years: dockless electric bikes. Batteries are cheaper and lighter than ever. One US firm, Jump Bikes, has custom-designed dockless ebikes sprinkled around San Francisco and Washington, DC. CEO Ryan Rzepecki suspects they’ll eclipse the appeal of regular bike sharing, because you could arrive at work without being drenched in sweat. “The number of people who are willing to ride electric bikes is probably 10X that of people who are willing to ride a regular one,” he says.

The State Of The Electric Motorcycle Industry 2018:
https://cleantechnica.com/2018/05/13/th ... stry-2018/

Starts:
While many electric motorcycles have come and gone, and some resort to obscene lawsuits to keep their company alive, some elmoto manufacturers have remained in business and even grown. We’ll look at the state of two-wheeled electrification, big and small, slow and fast in 2018.

Ends:
Electric mopeds & scooters

While most motorcyclists would rather ride bikes capable of 100mph and more, there’s a much larger global market for mopeds and scooters. But that’s a story for a different article. We’ve got plenty of e-scoot news here. All I know about these lightweights is that you’ll want to stick with a trusted brand. It’s very easy to make small, cheap electric powertrains that break down then can’t be serviced. Electric scooters, mopeds, and bicycles could save us all by dramatically improving traffic and air quality in cities. People just need to get past the fear-mongering the auto industry has fed them and give life outside the cage a try. The feeling of freedom is magnificent.

This is the website of the Guernsey Press newspaper which has been a major part of life in Guernsey since its launch in 1813.

Our key aims are to champion the Bailiwick and its people, be the voice of the community, provide all the major local news and sport first and best, entertain and engage with our readers and be a trusted and respected source and platform for our audience and advertisers.

The Guernsey Press is a daily, six-days a week, paid-for title and, along with all its associated publications and multi-media platforms, is part of the Guiton Group which is owned by the Claverley Group of companies.

We are the area’s best-read newspaper, including national titles, and have a loyal following. In 2009 the paper was shortlisted for the daily newspaper of the year (below 40,000) in the UK Regional Press Awards. In 2013 we marked our bicentenary and celebrated 200 successful years.

E-bike subsidy is spent in less than a month:

Starts:
FUNDING set aside to subsidise buying an electric bike has been exhausted less than a month after it was offered.

A total of 366 have been bought as a result of the private/public partnership between Environment & Infrastructure and local retailers.

The scheme, which received £100,000 of funding via the Integrated Transport Strategy, was designed to promote the use of electric cycles as an alternative to the car.

E&I worked with retailers to secure a 25% discount on purchases up to the value of £1,500.

Of that, 20% was being offered by the committee with the shops contributing the remaining 5%.
