Electric Bicycle?:
https://community.plus.net/t5/General-C ... -p/1538588

Starts:
Any views on Electric Bicycles?

Clearly there are a number of different new ones from around £250 or used at lessWink

I think battery recharging time is still an issue as is the number of recharges you can do, so I need to do some costings.Undecided

I saw one like this one that has two motors and two batteries. So its road legal and can go up to 15mph for say 25miles before switching to the other motors and batteries for the return journey .... or off road (with both motors and batteries) at 30mph!

Blurb below and the cost? Around £1,000 new.

PedalEase Twin Motor Electric bike
E-bike with Twin 36v 250w motors built in front and rear wheel. The bike has two 36v 15.5ah batteries and two 36v 250w motors which provides the rider with more advantages as under:

Twin Motor E bike advantages
😀 You get 2 * 36v 15.5 ah batteries = 36v * 31Ah which not only increases you range to around 50+ miles range with one motor assisting the other but also can enhances your speed.
😀 You can just ride with one rear or front motor at a time at 15mph or use both motors together for off road speed of 30mph.
😀 Even distribution of weight on the bike with two mini motors and batteries.
😀 Most important you will never be out of power, if one motor or battery stops you can still go home with the second one.

The rear motor has got the PAS connected for pedal assist riding also it is connected to the KTLCD3 handle bar display. The rear motor is also connected to thumb throttle along with front motor. One throttle can turn both motors at a time or one motor of your choice by turning off one of the batteries or handle bar switch.

The front motor is similarly connect to the rear with the single throttle and also has a KT880 LED display

This latest 2018 Model - upgraded 21 speed gears (3x7 speed shimano gear shifters)

The KTLCD3 handlebar display has adjustable speed function, odometer , speedometer ,PAS and throttle function. Top speed 30mph using both motors together.

Electric Motorcycle Company Alta Motors Sets Sights On Scaling Up For Global Markets:
https://cleantechnica.com/2018/05/13/el ... l-markets/

Starts:
Builder of affordable, electric motorcycles Alta Motors recently partnered with Harley Davidson to drive scale and get their motorcycles into the hands of more customers around the world. The new partnership is already starting to bear fruit as the high-tech motocross company fleshes out the benefits of having an established, high-volume cruiser builder with arguably the strongest brand in the industry on their side as they look to take on the world.

Alta Motors sprouted out of a culture steeped in research and design, with products naturally growing out of the technologies being developed. The latest of its products, the Redshift MXR affordable electric motorcycle, makes use of the heart and soul of Alta’s tech — a battery that packs the highest energy density of any other lightweight electric vehicle.

We recently spoke with Marc Fenigstein about these topics. Marc’s LinkedIn bio has him down as Alta’s Rapidisto-in-Chief, which means he “plays at the intersection of design, business, and technology.” Marc shared more about how the company is thinking about its plans to drive scale and take its products to the next level. He shared that, “the hardest thing for a startup is the supply chain,” and with that in mind, they started looking for a partner that could help them level up the way Alta Motors sources its raw materials.

On average, the tourist population greatly exceeds the number of permanent residents.
Summit County implements new features for electric bike share program:
https://www.parkrecord.com/news/summit- ... e-program/

Starts:
When Summit County launched the nation's first all-electric bike-share program last year, users encountered some bumps along the way.

The community, while overwhelmingly supportive of the program, dealt with issues such as problems with the mobile phone application and availability of bikes. There are nine bike stations with more than 80 bikes in service throughout the Snyderville Basin and Park City. Bewegen Technologies, Inc., a Canadian bike-share operator, and Corps Logistics, a New Jersey-based company, monitor the system through a contract with the county.

Summit County Manager Tom Fisher said the immediate success of the program overwhelmed the operator, creating many of the issues users experienced.

With his feet on the pedals of the electric-assist bicycle, and with Labrador retriever mixes Kiwi and Chick Pea in a wagon behind, Franks makes quick work of his 7- to 14-mile ride, depending on his route, where at 6 a.m. there’s hardly ever any traffic.

Nonetheless, he and the dogs, both rescue animals and each about 6 years old, can distract even the most cautious drivers.

Chinadialogue.net is an independent, non-profit organisation based in London and Beijing. It was launched on July 3, 2006. Chinadialogue is funded by a range of institutional supporters, including several major charitable foundations.

Can Chinese cities leave the car behind?:
https://www.chinadialogue.net/article/s ... ar-behind-

Starts:
Plagued by congestion and pollution, China’s cities are exploring models of transportation that are more sustainable in terms of their social, environmental and climate impacts. Some have emerged as global leaders, such as Hangzhou, south-west of Shanghai, which in 2017 won an international award for its municipal bike sharing scheme. More recently Shenzhen, a major city north of Hong Kong, electrified its entire fleet of public buses, gaining worldwide recognition.
Includes:
By 2014, China had over 200 million electric bicycles, which represented the main form of transport for countless households.
... and:
But these rapidly developing forms of transport present city planners with challenges. Electric bikes are relatively fast and their numbers are rapidly increasing but they have become a major cause of traffic accidents. Between 2013 and 2017 there were 56,200 accidents caused by electric bicycles resulting in death or injury in China, with 8,431 people killed and 63,500 injured.

WHO:260,000 die in China as a result of road accidents
:
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2016 ... 442984.htm
Approximately 260,000 people die in China as a result of road accidents each year and around 6 in 10 of the total estimated deaths are vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and people on motorcycles, according to the latest WHO estimates.

The information was released on Tuesday as WHO China and the Red Cross Society of China were holding a Health Dialogue under the theme of "Safer Roads Save Lives," designed to provide platforms for strategic discussion on critical public health issues facing China and the world.

"The carnage that occurs on the world’s roads every single day is a public health crisis of gargantuan proportions," said Bernhard Schwartländer, WHO China Representative, addressing the event.

AvantiPlus Blenheim owners Marije and Danijel Duvnjak have joked they might start standing outside the courthouse advertising "lose-your-licence" deals for people who suddenly need a bicycle.

Danijel Duvnjak said he had sold about eight to 10 bikes in the past year to people who had their licence cancelled or restricted, "without even pushing the market".
Locally, in Ontario, Canada, shortly after Canada and then Provinces legalized the "power-assisted bicycle", this market started to be flooded w/Made-in-China ("Chineesy-quality") "bikes" watt look more like "scooters". Poorly designed and cheaply made with pedals watt function about as well as the human appendix. And some folks took to calling these "bikes" as "D-U-I Scooters".

Hehe... In the flood of ebike-related Market Research Reports... (one or more daily re electric bikes or re components like batteries... "daytime running lights"... "motors"... "Buy Our Report!") this one's kinka amusing...

Investor Opinion
Reports and Analysis
Electric Bicycles Market to Continue Exhibiting Strong Growth:
https://opinioninvestor.com/electric-bi ... th/541048/

Starts:
Annual unit sales of electric bicycles in China are projected to decline over the forecast period, owing to increasing traffic disruption and accidents. In 2009, around 10 cities that included Guangzhou, Changsha, Shenzhen, Changzhou, Foshan and Dongguang, had either imposed restrictions or banned usage of e-bikes. However, China is projected to retain dominance in the electric bicycles market over the forecast period due to significant demands for electric bicycles from other cities of economy.

The Los Angeles Times is the largest metropolitan daily newspaper in the country, with a daily readership of 1.4 million and 2.4 million on Sunday, more than 39 million unique latimes.com visitors monthly and a combined print and online local weekly audience of 4.3 million. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Times has been covering Southern California for more than 136 years.
(Wiki:)
Venice is a residential, commercial, and recreational beachfront neighborhood within Los Angeles, California. It is located within the urban region of western Los Angeles County known as the Westside.

Venice was founded in 1905 as a seaside resort town. It was an independent city until 1926, when it merged with Los Angeles. Today, Venice is known for its canals, beaches, and the circus-like Ocean Front Walk, a two-and-a-half-mile (4.0 km) pedestrian promenade that features performers, mystics, artists and vendors.
Bird scooters are ruining Venice:
http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la ... story.html

Starts:
I am certain that people who ride Bird scooters don't read newspapers, so we may speak freely here. The reports you read are true: These electric scooters are everywhere — roads, sidewalks, street corners, parking lots, boardwalks, apartment complex hallways — beeping while stationary and whirring when rolling, ridden mostly by stoic mannequins in flip-flops.

Although I would like to avoid them, I have no choice but to consider them because I live in Venice, which is where the first Bird hatched and where the flock is thickest. Bird's founder and CEO, Travis VanderZanden, says, "We won't be happy till there are more Birds than cars," so I guess I am supposed to get used to it.

Full disclosure: I am 38 years old and I either drive a car, ride a bike (man-powered), or I walk. I find electric bikes, scooters and skateboards pathetic. But I kept my scoffing to myself. Until now.

Because suddenly, almost daily, I have some near-collision with a Bird scooter rider — he who sees nothing but the phone in his hand, thinks of nothing but the next text, and hears nothing but whatever music he has chosen to pump through the white inserts protruding from his wasted ears. He who, despite all that, is still traveling up to 15 mph on the street or sidewalk.
"some near-collision"... (so one has to imagine having any "real" collision...)

Dapu Drive Systems Opens European Service Office:

Starts:
SHANGHAI, China – Being successful on the booming European e-bike markets requires at least a service office close to these markets. Drive systems supplier Dapu is the next who is taking this step forward. Its new office will be operational early next month.

Japanese owned and Shanghai based Dapu entered into a joint venture with MOK Technologies in the Netherlands for service and maintenance. This office will be open by the end of this year. Next to that Dapu also entered into a partnership with the Dutch company Betronic. “We want to be close to our customer to provide the best possible service and one of our important clients is based in the Netherlands,” said Dapu President Fumio Kurebayashi at the China Cycle Show in Shanghai last week.

Bike-sharing programs are up and rolling in more than 80 U.S. cities, and bike sales are up, too, especially electric bicycles, which give you a little power boost when your legs get tired and you start inhaling the road gravel.

TreeHugger is the leading media outlet dedicated to driving sustainability mainstream.
Chinese electric car sales up 149%:
https://www.treehugger.com/cars/chinese ... s-149.html

Includes:
Business Green reports that sales of electric vehicles were up 149% in China in the first four months of the year. And China being China, that means an awful lot of cars—225,310 to be precise. (It's not immediately clear to me whether this figure includes plug-in hybrids as well as pure battery electric vehicles.)

Ends:
In slightly less exciting news, also reported in the Business Green story was the fact that car sales overall were up 11.5% in April. I hope that doesn't mean the Chinese e-bike boom is over...
Car companies gambling on the usual property damages and injuries and deaths and traffic "congestion"... but done in a more "eco-friendly" way...

My newest book, The Inevitable, a New York Times bestseller, is now available in paperback. The book is also a bestseller in China, and I spend a lot of time visiting China to speak about the inevitable and to see what the Chinese have planned for our future.

Convert a regular bike into an awesome electric bike

I decided to convert my city cruiser bicycle into a comfy e-bike. After researching the various ways to do this, I settled on a mid-drive kit. The typical way to make an e-bike is to mount the motor in the hub of one wheel. This is the easiest (cheapest) conversion because it disrupts the rest of the bike the least, and will fit most bikes. But if the wheel gets a flat, the motor and wiring become a hassle. The other way is to mount the motor in the crankshaft between the pedals.
