Smart city mission floats RFP for public bicycle sharing serviceTwo-wheel green ride on the cards for ‘smart’ Panaji
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/cit ... 688537.cms

Starts:
Panaji: With 560 bicycles and at least 30 docking stations, the capital’s dream of a public bicycle-sharing system could soon be a reality. Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd (IPSCDL) has floated a request for proposal (RFP) for Goa’s first-ever bicycle sharing service (PBS). It hopes to finalise the contract within 60 days.

Under the Smart City Mission, Imagine Panaji will engage an agency to design, build, operate and transfer the bicycle-sharing system in Panaji. The project will be taken up under the public-private partnership model, but will have no financial investment from the state.
Includes:
“The PBS will promote non-motorised transport and help cut down greenhouse emissions in the city,” chief executive officer and managing director of IPSCDL Swayandipta Pal Chaudhuri said. “It will give us access and control over pedestrianisation in the city.”

Chaudhuri said 70% of the bicycles will be geared while the remaining will be powered by an electric motor for use on steep gradients. To keep the cost of the service minimal, the implementing agency will be able to monetise 80% of the advertisement space while 20% advertisement space will be left for the government publicity initiatives.

AIR i is equipped with IoT technology and linked with KT’s Smart Mobility Platform. KT’s Smart Mobility Platform connects the IoT internet module embedded in a mobile object such as a bike with its LTE-M network. It can identify the location of the mobile object in real time and control its functions.

KT and Recon Hi-tech provide “Finding a Lost Bike” service that checks the most recent location of a lost or stolen product. It also supports a “Remote Power Control” service that stops the product's motors from running to prevent the lost AIR i from being resold or used for other purposes.

E-Bikes Give Riders, Local Economy Added Boost:
https://www.ecori.org/green-economy/201 ... dded-boost

Starts:
PROVIDENCE — For a somewhat high-end, somewhat off-the-beaten-track shop, both in its location and in the products it sells, and a shop that’s been in business for only a few weeks, Mission Electric seems to be doing pretty well.

The Friday afternoon that I hung around speaking with owner Tyler Justin and his wife, Emily, began as they wrapped up a sales pitch with two young men.

“That’s e-biking in a nutshell,” Tyler said. “You guys want to try one out?”

“Sure!”

After filling out a brief form, the two rode off, one on a Benno eJoy and the other on a Tern.

A few minutes later we had to take a break from the interview so Emily could pick up a conversation with a woman who had stopped by a few weeks earlier to see what the shop had to offer.

“It always takes a few visits,” Tyler said.

Finally, just as we were wrapping up the interview, Tyler excuses himself to speak with a customer who stopped by only a few days after buying a Populo from Mission Electric.

“I just love the way the motor responds and the huge battery,” the new owner, who had previously been riding a conversion-kit e-bike, said as he and Tyler stepped aside to trade bicycling stories.

So watt’s all the fuss about?

The Independent is a British online newspaper. Established in 1986 as an independent national morning newspaper published in London, it was controlled by Tony O'Reilly's Independent News & Media from 1997 until it was sold to Russian oligarch Alexander Lebedev in 2010. The last printed edition of The Independent was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only its digital editions.

Nicknamed the Indy, it began as a broadsheet, but changed to tabloid (compact) format in 2003. Until September 2011, the paper described itself on the banner at the top of every newspaper as "free from party political bias, free from proprietorial influence". It tends to take a pro-market stance on economic issues.

The daily edition was named National Newspaper of the Year at the 2004 British Press Awards.

In June 2015, it had an average daily circulation of just below 58,000, 85 per cent down from its 1990 peak, while the Sunday edition had a circulation of just over 97,000.
Gtech e-bike review: Like a bike that makes you incredibly good at cycling
("It's like sailing on wind, or being roughly twice as strong and fit as you really are"):
https://www.independent.co.uk/life-styl ... 12586.html

(Hehe... Written like a true `lubber - land lubber... and sailors LOVE sailing "off" the wind ie "down" wind ie with the wind "at your back"... "sailing on wind"... )

Starts:
Technically, an e-bike is a normal bicycle that also includes a battery that gives you a push, but in reality it’s nothing like that. In reality it’s like a wizard: able to summon winds behind your back to propel you, like making yourself roughly twice as strong and fit as you really are, or like getting a backie from a friendly ghost.
Hehe... "looking like a real bike" ...

Includes:
They are both the same price: just under £1,000. That's costly, of course, but it's worth remembering that as well as everything else you get a very good bike, with the chain of a high-end motorbike and a battery of the kind used in an electric car.

Ends:
Because joyful is what it is, and that joy never gets old.

It is something like the first time you ever ride a bike: the thrill of the way that simple metal and mechanics can turn the movement of your legs into a surprisingly powerful and speedy journey. But this time it's not all you.
DANG. "Wet my jeans" again.

By way of Estonia comes Stinko, a lightweight, foldable, electric bike/scooter offering a solution to the problem for commuters here in Morgan Hill.

Ain Indermitte, like the Stinko "bike" itself, is from Estonia. For the past 12 years, he’s made the commute by train from Morgan Hill to Sunnyvale, usually with the aid of a bike or electric scooter. Indermitte has turned his enthusiasm for the bike in to a part-time sales job, where he promotes Stinkos on a bike-to-bike basis.

Funny it says "Stinko" but their shirts say "Stigo". Maybe something was lost (or gained) in the translation.

I call Bird scooters "Turd scooters" and Jump bikes "Junk bikes". They litter the sidewalks of SF these days.

^^ Hehe... Most all my life told I was a "bright boy" (eg last time I had a job as a full time "employee", the company owner watt I worked for about doubled my take home-after taxes pay... in the first year I was working there...) Problem? Seeing the 1st-century urban world as very "messed up" re urban transportation. In a recent vacation, months spent in the "health care system"... various "hospitals"... doctors tested my battered brain and their tests concluded I still have a "higher I.Q." than 95% of their other patients. It's not "pretty" being "reality-based".

Stinko offers commuters a mobile assist:

Funny it says "Stinko" but their shirts say "Stigo". Maybe something was lost (or gained) in the translation.

I call Bird scooters "Turd scooters" and Jump bikes "Junk bikes". They litter the sidewalks of SF these days.
Hehe... I claim my spell checker is "acting up".

HAHA... "Turd Scooters". ... re "Junk" bikes? Not 100% sure... Do they have GPS tracking? Kinda very much liking that Korean "theft protection"... and that Vanmoof w/GPS tracker... and Muving around... and, and, and... SO MUCH happening these days. Amazing watt one can do having added a battery to a bicycle!

The Daily Camera is a newspaper in Boulder, Colorado, United States.
... and:
Boulder is the home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Boulder County, and the 11th most populous municipality in the U.S. state of Colorado. Boulder is located at the base of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 5,430 feet (1,655 m) above sea level. The city is 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Denver.

The population of the City of Boulder was 97,385 people at the 2010 United States Census, while the population of the Boulder, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area was 294,567.
From the Editorial Advisory Board: Dockless bike-sharing offers potential, pitfalls:
http://www.dailycamera.com/editorials/c ... ing-offers

Starts:
Boulder's obsession with carbon-free transportation has City Council considering the current fad of dockless bicycles for rent by the ride. LimeBike, one of the companies vying for local participation, is financed by Silicon Valley investors to the tune of $70 million, while ofo, another player in contention, raised $866 million, led by Chinese online shopping giant Alibaba. (During the dot-com boom era we used to call it "stupid money.")

Includes:
Common gripes around town have to do with our traffic, how little car parking we have and how much it costs. I get it. As a mom to two kids whom I can't always force to be in the same summer camp, I have found myself frustrated with getting them to their respective camps in different parts of town (why in the world do they all start at 9 a.m.?) and still make it to my full-time job at a decent hour.

Some weeks the stars align perfectly: they're in the same camp and I can get them there on our electric cargo bike. We get to bypass the car clusters and breathe fresh morning air. There's one fewer car on the road adding to the congestion and I get rock star bike parking right in front of my building.
... and:
With electric bikes and Uber/Lyft, we should explore taking a surface parking space out at major blocks and converting them to bike-parking corals like we've done on west Pearl Street. These are preferred by those of us pulling trailers and/or riding cargo bikes, and they don't clog up the sidewalks.
Yup. Bike "sharing" has proven to be a huge FAIL (dealing with the pubic)...

Oslo (capital city of Norway) is offering a $1200 cargo e-bike incentive... watt might seem a far more intelligent option.

NEW BERN, Craven County — A new business in New Bern will now allow you to take a ride on an electric bicycle while taking a tour of the colonial capital.

Thanks to Pedego, a new electric bike company in downtown New Bern, anyone can now do it. Pedego celebrated its grand opening Friday. It's owners hope these bicycles help the community in the same way they helped him.

Our founders started Digital Trends to solve a major problem: How do we introduce people to the world of technology in a way that is fun and welcoming, not intimidating and snarky?
Cruise the streets in style and comfort on Blix’s new Sol electric bike:

As more people ditch their cars and hop aboard the electric bike caravan, the need for varying styles and designs continues to expand the marketplace. Blix Bikes is a leader in designing stylish and practical ebikes, with a production history dating back to 2014 and an inventory that currently includes over seven different models. Recently, Blix launched the lowest step-through ebike on the market — the Sol, designed for stylish, comfortable commuting featuring Scandinavian minimalist roots. KTM Bicycles places €10million bet on e-Bikes with new production facility:
https://cyclingindustry.news/ktm-bicycl ... -facility/

Starts:
KTM Bicycles will invest €10 million in a new production space in Mattighofen, Austria, the CEO Stefan Limbrunner reported on ORF Radio Upper Austria on Wednesday afternoon.

The facility will come in place of the 45-year-old hall on its site where a 5,000 square foot production building will be constructed.
Ends:
Limbrunner said: “Growing demand for e-bikes is the main reason for the investment. When it comes to sales, more than 60 percent is generated by e-bikes. Also, in volume, the numbers are increasing rapidly. In Mattighofen the production volume expanded from 66,000 units in 2017 to 88,000 units this year. In 2019, we have planned 111,000 bicycles.”

Hehe... Note: In the world of "NON-ebike media", they say "Electrive is a made up name and is derived from the words electric and drive"... NOT "electric and ride".

US-China trade war to hit e-bike market with price surge:
https://www.electrive.com/2018/06/23/us ... ice-surge/

Starts:
Trump could be responsible for hitting U.S. sales of electric bikes hard as pedelecs from China are included in a list of goods proposed for a 25% import tariff hike. This would drive prices up a couple of hundred dollars, potentially stifling a strong-going industry.

Particularly importers of electric bikes made in China such as Trek, Giant, Raleigh Electric, Pedego and other brands would be affected. A 25 percent import tariff would effectively rise prices hundreds of dollars, leading to a competitive disadvantage.

Almost ironically, this would likely hit companies that assemble their electric bikes in the States but buy most their components such as frames but also electric drives in China.

Maybe USA cousins can "visit" Canada to pick up their (new) electric bikes...

"Junk Bikes" (aka Jump Bikes) are directly, in a meaningful way, changing the culture in Santa Cruz

Now... instead of folks coming here on a Sunday and spending hours driving around in circles looking for parking
(which will later result in parking tickets...)

And being "stuck" in the tourist traps
With the shitty expensive food...

Now

They can come and park someplace random
Jump on a power assist bike
And... spend their money in our town (at smaller, better establishments)

Its a better vibe and people are into it.
They are digging ebikes

...

For us locals... its about getting the weekenders to support our local resources.. so those resources remain available to use thru the cold winter months.

Good Food
Good Stuff

Public Ebikes make towns better.

Increasing battery voltage and controller current limit will result in a non linear experience

^^ Hehe... Yah, have been working on getting my life back together (earning incomes again). So far have gotten a local bike store owner to sign up (five year contract) to rent bikes in a local park... Watt he's still missing so far is renting any electrics.

Am about to start importing some electrics from Germany, "moped"-style... bikes:

Image

So far they only have one bike store selling these in North America (in California). Local stores selling electrics tell me their Number One Selling Tool goes something like "Would you like a test ride?".

... and I figure on getting into the tourist biz... by renting these bikes to folks visiting the beach (local bike shop already renting at a beach-side location in a park next to a 20km long and flat bike path...)

EDIT: BTW... These Unimokes have already popped up as seen on ES TV:
