Full Suspension Rock Bouncer Inspired Quad Build

Post by skyeg3 » Jun 19 2016 2:11pm

This is going to be my build thread for my electric quad cruiser I'm building. I've been throwing lots of designs around with different suspension and motor ideas. I've pretty much settled on the design I have now which should have good suspension travel and articulation while being relatively simple to build. I am designing the vehicle for myself and my own unique physical abilities - I have a spinal cord injury at the c6 level. I'll post more as things progress. Remember to subscribe to the thread for updates.

Happy trails.

Cool project, I'm subscribing.

As an alternative you could also use QS Motor car hub motors and find quad/ATV (front) rims (14") and suitable tires for that more accurate rock crawler/bouncer feeling 8) :

http://www.qs-motor.com/product/1000w-3 ... 205-model/ (member Vito on here could help you with that as he works at QS Motors: https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewt ... 31&t=65972 )

Rim examples:

Good luck with your build

Cool project. Looking forward to see this completed. I think you are doing a great job application with that build. Don't be surprised if you get customers knocking on your door asking you to build one for them too.

Only thing that stings they eye a little are the roll bar. A little tall and a little much?
What about a more discrete roll bar, like Ariel Atom, Ktm X-bow, Ford Cobra style?

That green version you rendered made me think of the Atom, and that platform will be rock solid and will never twist or give.

Google "offroad handcycles" to get design ideas. I have a friend who works with disabled riders and trikes seem to have developed as the way to go, keeping the weight more centered helps with handling, climbing and rough terrain.
The older I get, the faster I was

There are several awesome builds around for para/quadriplegic. I can't help but think that you're going to do more damage than good to your back if you're really hoping to take this rigid frame "rock bouncing".

Here are some threads that might help out your journey:

What speed range are you planning for ?
If you are seriously going to go rock crawling, i dont think the hub motors are going to be a good choice.
This forum owes its existence to Justin of ebikes.ca

Thanks for the input guys. Its always great to see first impressions. I should probably clarify, my intent isn't to go rock bouncing in this thing. Its more just the 4 link suspension front and rear that has me calling it rock bouncer inspired. I'm just really liking how simple it will be to build for the travel I'm going to get. Independent suspension was going to require a lot of custom parts.

To answer some questions:

SlowCo: Those motors look awesome I hadn't seen them but they would be too heavy for this build. I'm going for lightweight. Right now I'm planning on using 20" bmx wheels 2.50" wide tire or maybe a fat tire. Light light light. Thanks for the links.

macribs: As a person whose had a near death experience in a similar vehicle I can tell you theres nothing sexier than a big fat rollbar. I see what you mean though looking at it again. I will probably step it down to 1.375" or 1.25". I agree the green frame is sexy but damn complicated. The other hurdle with the full independent suspension is all the custom pieces from the suspension out. With the solid axles I'm just buying parts and putting them together. I'm trying to be smart for once.

Drunkskunk: Thanks.

E-geezer: If I wanted to have whats out there I'd buy it. This will be much more stable than a trike. It has to be so I can spin donuts.

r3volved: Thanks for the links I hadn't seen the last one of the quad. I'll definitely read through that.

Hillhater: Nah I shouldn't have used the rock bouncer reference. I don't know a lot about the motors yet I was told they were coming out sometime in june-ly.

Hey All,

Still working on the build. I am now planning on using two mxus 3000w v3 5t hub motors. My questions are now about electrical stuff. What controller(s) should I use? What battery voltage? Two batteries in parallel to increase voltage? If anyones got solutions and resources, I'm all ears.
