I would like to buy an extension cable with connectors, that are referred to as "Molex", in the article below.

http://www.electricbike.com/connectors-halls-throttle-motor/

Unfortunately everything I can find, if I search for Molex are these:

Isn't Molex an international standard ?
Does anybody know a precise definition of the connector in the article ?

Thanks
Felix

I buy mine from a local place in packages

Molex is a manufacturer.
They make a gazillion different connectors. Most of their popular 'common' connectors use a proprietary round pin for maximum contact area and retention.

There are no 'international standards' for controller connectors. Companies use what they want - more often than not, cheesy 'scooter connectors' with flat connector pins. Those are what are shown in that article. Misinformation - they are not made by Molex.

Check out the Chinese 'scooter' connectors here - these are probably what you need:

Thanks, the keyword scooter made me find these type of connectors, here in Germany on ebay.
BTW is it bad to have two connectors between motor and controller (on the phase wires) ? Is there a lot of resistance in banana connectors ?

Glad the scooter thing worked out....

Sort of depends on the current you are carrying, the connectors you use, and your skill at attaching the connectors.

If by 'banana connectors' you mean the RC 'bullet connectors', these work great and have little resistance. I wouldn't be concerned about an extra connector set on the phase wires.

Anderson Power Poles are also really good - if they are properly attached (the Big IF). I have two sets of Anderson PP on two of my motors - one set at the controller and one set near the wheel to facilitate wheel removal. No problems at all for 4 or 5 years running a modest 75 phase amps.

  • Most of the complaints about these come from crappy assembly. The contact must be able to float or rotate freely in the plastic shroud. Many times, they are crimped onto wire of too heavy a gauge, with too thick insulation, or the wire is twisted so it torques the contact one way or the other in the housing. In any of these cases the contacts are frozen in the shroud and cannot mate properly. They eventually fry, overheat, lose power, etc.
But of course, there are folks who swear the only way to build a bike is to solder everything together with no connectors at all, so go figure...

That's nice to hear. I will carry 30 A at max (probably even going to limit it to 24 A). I asked about bullet connectors because I can buy an extension cable, so I can save the soldering for that part.
My soldering skills are average and I have never crimped before, so I hope the Hall cable extension works out. I guess if it's low amps, it doesn't have to be perfect.

Thanks for your help
