Tire slipping on rim causing valve stem to tear and or flat

Post by 999zip999 » Jul 28 2018 12:37am

My muxus 3,000 turbo 4t and powervelocity 18fet bt controller at 70amps and 80v from 24s A123 20ah. So 5,600 watts. Matched with a sunryno lite 26in rim - rim brakes kool- stop and regen. The tires are the new maxxis gypsy silk ebike tire that has moped on the side. Speed rated. Then the thick slime tube.
The tire moved on the rim by 10in backwards or thru acceleration. Ok. This time a small whole on the inne side close to the rim. Rim tape good no ruff edges. But most times I rip next to the stem. Yes have filed smooth.
Is there a way to keep the tire from moving on the rim ? Powder or glue maybe screws ? Go tubeless .I don't want to do this as I do break a spoke.

Did you have low tire pressure?

I usually have it at 55 to 60 PSI I think this time it was closer to 40 something. How can I get more friction or traction between the tire and the rim ?

Read an old motorcycle book "Speed and how to obtain it" it recommended drilling the rims in four places each side and fitting self tapping screws. Trails and motocross bikes now use rim locks. Don't know if you can get rim locks for push bike sized wheels maybe someone could 3d print some.

Keep higher tire pressure.

Otherwise, suggestions I've seen are to sand the inside of the rim wall and the outside of the tire bead, then glue them together with rubber cement like that used for tire patching. Haven't tried it.

If you have a moto rim and tyre you can fit a rim lock. These are used by mx riders on the rear tyre. You will need to drill a hole through the rim the opposite side to the valve hole to fit the rim lock. The rim lock grabs the bead of the tyre by sandwiching the bead between the rim lock and the wheel rim. I use one on my cromotor rear drive wheel on my mx style ebike. If you are not sure what i am talking about look them up on youtube, plenty on there. Rim locks are really cheap and come in different widths to fit the rim.

Spray the bead of the tire with belt conditioner before mounting it on the rim. Any anti-slip or tacky spray will do, even those for floors. Surprisingly, dish soap does work to stick a tire to the rim, but need a week drying. Always use wire beaded tires. Use thick tubes with steel stem. Inspect your wheels for angled stem and correct immediately.

I've found I sometimes just got a sucky rim & tyre combo (too loose or too tight) seemingly due to pot luck. Changing either solved it.

Last time that happened to me I used a too small sized tube by mistake. Read the size off of the rim, instead of the tire.

I saw the video for Rim locks on a moped tire I wonder if they have a rim lock for a bicycle style Tire or can I take a moto Tire One the smallest one and grind it to make it fit a bicycle application ? As the Moto one looks too big for a bicycle rim. If not I will try the sprsy belt grip stuff and sand the inside rail of the rim.
Thank you everyone for your great suggestions.

I found a 1.6 rim lock. But need to have it in hand. Shit I have some bend rims I can practice on. I guess my local motorcycle store would have them. Are they common or just a white elephant ?

You can order them blue plastic ones on Amazon for 6 bucks. They fit very few bicycle rim/tire combos, but they can be filed to shape. Anyway, I don’t like using them in a bicycle rim. I prefer Grip-It spray, for much lesser weight and even distribution.

Using a airline I had a narrow bike tyre blow clean off the rim in my hand at 80psi, no injury lucky just threw my new rim and the separated tyre on the floor in shock.

From that day on I've gone a lot more careful on my tubeless combos, I seem to have shit luck when it comes to tyres I spent £70 not so long back on tyres that just will not mount the rim I've ruined the bead on one trying greased it tyred everything god damm Michelin too Pyle of terd I think my rims are not what they seem I had them from an old motorbike so I assumed they should be standard 16 inch moped but only 20 inch bmx tyres can fit on them, lucky I went with wide rims to give the extra support so i used the stock 3.0 tyres the a2b comes with.

Went to AutoZone all three employees couldn't understand what I was asking for as belt grip comes in that bottle with a little fluffy Cotton On The End. I'll just go to an older auto store I think you're supposed to let it dry first any suggestions ?

Etc... Gunk does make a good one. Don’t let it dry before mounting the tire, but it does need some time to dry after. Generally overnight but, you can ride right away if you are careful not to accelerate brutally.

I had a tire that was too loose on the rim, teared the tube. Happened a few times actually with various tire and rim combo's. Used belt dressing as mentioned. If the tire goes onto the rim too easily then try a different tire.

Rim locks may work, but you'd have to drill a hole or holes in your rim.

Just took a minimoto wheel apart to find the tube and tyre had been bonded with what looked like carpet adhesive it's caused quite a mess.
Its a billet alloy split rim to so there was just no need for it.

Wouash! Carpet adhesive is like contact glue. Hell of a job to clean. I would throw the tire to garbage, and clean the rim with an angle grinder. :?

On top of that the rim was balanced with car body filler how's that for a cowboy job, I've spent 2 hours cleaning the 4 half's to find the last one i was cleaning has taken a serious knock
I should have inspected them better.

I'm going to try and warm the rim up and true it out a bit see what I can achieve luckily there's no cracking and it's just the outer bead.

Just fitted a cheap rubber valve stem 1.75 inner tube in my 2.35 fat frank tyre and the tube seems to be slipping inside the tyre.Angling the stem within 5 miles twice.Correct size tube on order.

So I was trying to get the premtex in the short blue bottle with a mop attached to the lid the stuff was black. So blown Hall sensor in my Edge 1500 running at 3500 Watts. So had to get the Old Faithful muxus 3000 back on the road. With a maxxis gypsy silk thread with a moped printed and raised in bedded on the side of the rubber so must be speed rated.. So got the Foredom out withd double/ triple sandpaper Wheels scuff it all up scuffed up the side walls for better braking to but use something like 80 grit on a piece of sandpaper block for stopping power with kool-stop pads and regen. I got the gascatchinge gasket cement and belt dressing old school. The red and white can with the shirted lady falling down lifting shirt and showing her panties. The formula has change at used to be a smelly yellow contact cement glue for your head gasket or the paint on your belt so it help stick and not slip. The new one has a more milky colored cement that doesn't smell still contact cement but it might penetrate the rubber better then I used Goof Off on the rubber Rim Yeah that really old goof off the stuff that smells so bad probably lighter fluid the same equivalent. Then painted the tires with said gasket cinch and rim with an old Rim liner underneath so I would get liberal with it pulled off the old Rim liner. At this point I lined up the tire over the PSI spot so I know where it is on the drive side because the PSI spot differs from side to side I put it on one time one-time straight as can be no rotation on installation..
Hey thank you for everyone getting involved in this if this don't work I might pin it through it and screw it and by the way who knows it's going to work unless I'm test it I'm going out to rattlesnake Canyon and put some miles 30 miles on it up to 6,000 Watts.

I got a pile of tubes that have gone flat. Could make a bag out of them all.
Can count atleast a dozen times tire slipped, caused a flat.

cut the rest of the valve stem off, slit them along the inner circumference, and use them as liners over your actual tube in the tire. Little more flat protection. ;)

If you use plastic tire liners, that'll also help keep them from slicing your actual tube.
