[AUSTRALIA] Sur-Ron Light Bee / Fire Fly - Mid drive ebike

Postby Hyena » Tue Sep 05, 2017 1:49 am

Hey guys,
Allex is organising a group buy of these bikes for Europe, I'm looking to do a group buy for the Aussie market.
You can read his EU thread here: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=90196

But the bottom line is these are a new, pretty exciting bike out of China from a company call Sur-Ron.
The bike is called Light Bee, which appears to be a literal and incorrect translation of Fire Fly. LOL
I'll translate it again. Line up kids, and feel the sting of the BURNING WASP

This isn't an e-bicycle, it's an e-moto. It has foot pegs not pedals so you can't ride this around the street and pretend it's a bicycle :P
But you could probably ride it all the other places around local bush land that you can't get away with riding a noisier motorbike ;)
Power is 3kw continuous but seems to burst a fair bit more than that

I'm still finalising details, and production only kicks off today, but I'll update as more info comes to hand.

The base model bike is 48v and costs 2000USD
There's a 60v upgraded model that's 2350 USD. I suspect this is a no brainer upgrade.
Bike comes with 5A charger with a 10A charger being $70 USD.
The battery capacity is just over 30AH so I'd suggest the charger upgrade is a worthwhile one.
If you're impatient you can get one airshipped for $720 USD. Otherwise sea shipping will take around 6-7 weeks but will be MUCH less.
The price isn't finalised at this stage and is pending calculation of fees and charges, and how many people we can divide up these fees.
But approximately we're looking at a per bike cost of :

$3050 AUD (at today's exchange rate) + 10% GST and 5% customs duty = $3507
On top of that would be the actual shipping fee + customs brokerage.
If you want air shipping it'll cost just shy of $1000 so around $4500 in total.
For sea shipping I'm going to throw out a total ballpark figure of $1000 for actual sea shipping charges, port fees, brokerage and local delivery from the shipping depot to me.
Divided between 10 people that only works out about $100 each. If the total charge is only $800 it'll be $80 ea, if it's $1200 it'll be $120 and so on. That's based on 10 people and obviously more people make it cheaper, less make it more expensive.

Ideally we need at least 10 people to make this work but if we get close to that I might get an extra to sell later. I'm sure people will come along after the group buy has closed but at the same time I dont have $20k laying around to stock up on these!
There's always some unexpected added costs but I'm going to go with a ballpark figure of $3750 AUD delivered to Sydney.
It'll probably come in a shade under that, if so great, but if it's $20 more don't chew me out :P
I think SamD is happy to help with Victorian orders - elsewhere I'll look into the cheapest local road freight options.

Who's in ?

No takers so far ?? I would have thought there'd be alot of interest in these.
I guess the no pedals thing is a deal breaker ?

Are you in a position to put down a chunk of a deposit ? It's going to be a month before they ship out and then another 6 weeks on the water before they arrive so it'll be pretty much the end of the year by the time they land, but I'll need to fix up the actual product cost before they leave China

Yeah I haven't gone into depth with that yet! I need enough people on board to make this work at all before ticking all those boxes. I'm hoping it's just an 'approval to import' given it's not for road use etc.
The other option I'm looking at is importing them as kits that can be assembled locally...

There's an application for a non road use vehicle. Have a read of the website.

Yep I've just been reading it, thanks! Seems it's in the same category for non-road use or in pieces so either way it's the same process.
It should be just a formality and the fees fairly trivial when split across a few bikes.

I'm very interested. How much are we looking at for deposit and what is the timing on the final payment?

I'd need most of the money up front for the actual purchase of the bikes and to get them on the ship. Then in 4-6 weeks the balance would be payable for the local fees, taxes and then onwards shipping from the depot.
So realistically it'd be around 3k up front.

Working on how to get this past the minister for finance and warfare...

Going prospecting the week after next. Maybe find enough to fund the project.

As its looking like I wont be in my house before Christmas, I dont have much 'play money' until atleast christmas. I'll just have to play the waiting game otherwise I'd be all over it!
