I was thinking more head gasket - cork, aluminum - cork :) Will last forever, heat of the enclosure won't even touch it (let alone cause it to stick) and it handles far more pressure than even submersion in water can provide... also I know (or knew) a few companies who would custom cut head gaskets of this for hot rods with modified port bowls, etc... I'll check tommorow, if they are still in business... when I get my Kepler drive I'll do the upgrade so the CAD can be used by all :)

Darn down under engineers :)

I read all 400+ posts in the original thread, but I'm still a bit unclear regarding the noise level of the Friction Drive versus a DD- or geared- hub motor system like a 9 Continent or BMC.

I'd like an eBike system that's considerably more stealthy than the garden-variety weed wacker (LOL) - actually I thought that even the 9C was noticeably audible. I'm assuming the KFDS is louder than that. Is there any way to muffle the motor whine?

The drive is not loud but it is noticeably audible. Similar sound level to a geared hub motor. I still can sneak up on people :)

Is that you smiling in on the website for new inventors? I'm downloading the m4v of the show now, can't wait to see - and heck you don't even look like a nerd.

I'll host a copy (mirror) on my server shortly in xvid format for smaller streaming :)

Hard to compete with a CSIRO scientist with a 4 mil budget. Great experience though.

John,

So that's what happened to my drive, you needed it for that show? JK

Good job and the host didn't look too dumb on the bike - that's a compliment, every other person I know who has gotten on the news segments or shows like that when the host tries to ride he makes horrible scared sounds and wobbles about like a moron...

Mud guards (remember the hole in the fender idea, add a sliding apeture ahead and behind the motor that will continuously keep that apature closed from the rider and environment but will sill permit full friction engagement action).

I am going to make you eat those "Won't work with rear suspension bikes" comment :)

-Mike

PS: Overall fantastic appearance!
Regards,
Mike

Re: Kepler Friction Drive System - INTERFACE (sale thread)

Post by SanFranRider » Aug 19 2010 12:26pm

Do you have a prototype of the interface that's operational yet? If so, please tantalize us with photos, specs, etc. Will it come with a thumb-drive throttle or do we need to source that ourselves?

When do you expect the interface to begin shipping?

Running a few days behind on getting the website up but its very close. URL is http://www.eboo.st

Not much to see on the interface. I receive the first units next week for testing and de bugging. We are working really hard on getting this ready as its key to selling the drive as a complete unit.

Its quite overwelming how many local enquires I now have after the show both from indviduals and retailers. Its one thing to sell this drive as a kit to hobbyist but an enitrely different thing to sell to the general public.

Kepler... excellent stuff ! i have to say this looks like an ideal system in so many ways, performance, weight, stealth, security, portability, value, etc etc ... truly amazing.. now all i need is some cash.. !
A couple of questions if you dont mind ( i may have missed this in the threads)
1) .. do all the motor options have the same fitting, shaft dia's , mounting bolt pattern etc ??
if not, do you offer adaptor parts , or can you define exactly which motors are a direct fit .
2) I am not clear on how a throttle (thumb or t'grip) is interfaced with the ESC via hardwire. Can you link me to an explanation & recommended components.

Thanks, & again, congratulations on a well executed brainchild.

Re: Kepler Friction Drive System (sale thread)

There are 2 main bolt patterns on RC motors. The drive takes both so that's covered. The drive is designed for outrunner motors that have a prop driver fitted to the motor bell. The standard fitment is for a 10mm prop driver but a simple sleave can be used to adapt to 8mm or 6mm prop drivers. I can supply what ever is needed. just need to be told what motor you plan to use. The start of this thread has a list of motors that fit but any of the 63mm Hobby City motors will fit straight in. Also quite a few 48mm motors fit quite nicely also. Needs to be a 2000W plus motor for best results though.

In relation to interfacing the throttle to the RC ESC, you either need a modified servo tester with a 5K throttle like a Magura twist or a Currie thumb. Some people make their own throttle using a 5K pot and a spring loaded lever arangement. A search on this forum will find you a sample of this setup. I will have a dedicated interface ready in the near future which will do this job plus much more and will be well worth waiting for. However, the modified servo tester setup does work quite well also.

Drrooool. :D

I'd imagine the anodized black ones will take longer for the extra step, I can't wait! Do you have the assembly instructions ready yet? I just want to make sure I have the tools I need for the build, otherwise I'll throw down another $20 for the build. It looks like a standard bolt-together, but ya never know.
