AUS ally rims - still here.

Post by ridethelightning » May 28 2015 6:08am

Aluminium moped rims still available
18 and 19 x 1.4" in black with 5mm dia holes( special custom oredered for using 12 gage spokes or can be drilled for thicker gage)

price dropped to 40aud /rim+ shipping

shipping to pretty much anywhere in aus is very reasonable cause my friendly local posties let me calculate on weight alone and ignore volume :D

some potsage prices for example for 2 x 19"x1.4":

SA ~ $23(AUD)
VIC ~ $23
ACT ~ $25
QLD ~ $25
WA ~ $28
NSW~ $25

18x2.1 would be better then 19. 19 is a bitch to find tires for. Also 21 fronts would nice.

thanks for the info bluefang.

i was under the impression that the 19" tyres were more common here.

if thats the case, id actually prefer 18" for better performance.

i thought it was even harder to find tyres to run on a skinny 2.1" too? seems like 1.6" wide is a lot easyer to come by

i agree a 21" front would be good, but what about the weight? i notice how the moto rims get so much heavier with increasing diameter/width, without even taking the tyre into consideration..

pricing looks like 15aud/rim(!) but the crunch will come ofcourse, with the shipping. itl be seafreight so it might be reasonable. we'll see.

I haven't had much trouble sourcing 19" tyres in oz. Running 70/100x19 motorcross sourced from ebay at $55 delivered including tube. 18" looks cool but ground clearance begins to be an issue with std cranks where I ride dodging rocks. You can get cheap rims also but limited to wider sizes and best I could find was 19x1.8" which are heavy. I'd love to go down to 19x1.4 as will still fit the available tyres but save some weight. Remain interested in the buy of 19".

all good input.
i really like the 1.4" wide tyres for ebikes. its just that little bit tougher than a dh rim, without giving you too much surface contact area, that will equate to larger losses, probably more so on-road. anything much wider than that seems more suited to a 100kg+ dryweight moto.

looks are also a consideration of course, iv seen what an 18 can do on the rear, still gets good accelleration.
18 on the rear and 19 on the front would look good i think.

Sounds like a great deal you got there on the mx tyres 9lives, still got a link to it?
last time i got an 18"rim and tyre from the states it ended up costing nearly half a grand :| :|

19" is a ok tire if you are buying brand new, but if your like me and just use primarily second hand tires its a almost never used size in the smaller sizes I would expect most people to use. Motorbike shops have to pay to have tires removed so they are usually happy for anyone to come grab some freebies and I usually end up paying $10 for a tube and getting it mounted

RTL,

I would love to support you on both 19 x 1.4 and 18 x 1.4

However, i prefer a front and rear option where the spoke hole angles cater for larger diameter hub motors.

this occurred to me when i bought rims last, however, perhaps was just luck but iv never had a problem getting a large cro hub into a moto rim, even though it was not a special rear spoke angle hub.

iv laced the same rims as front wheel with 20mm axle hubs, works just fine too.

that said, its possible i could ask for front/rear spoke hole option from supplier.

just got a reply from the supplier-

all good to mix 19" and 18" in the one shipment.

cost is aprox $13.30/rim landed in Melbourne. (actually slight difference for 18 and 19size but bugger all)
aprox 23days eta from payment.

then there will be high probability of paying import juties on top, lets say 10% and then some, so id say roughly 15usd/rim, add road freight to the depot  then shipping within Aus to respective customers locations :D

so it might be say 20usd/rim + domestic postage. just an estimate.

So!
there it is.
taking orders now.
anyone keen, please speak up. ill list numbers and names at the first post of the thread.

First time organising an international shipment like this ? I can offer some insight :)
ridethelightning wrote:cost is aprox $13.30/rim landed in Melbourne. (actually slight difference for 18 and 19size but bugger all)

Are these coming by sea or air ?
Unless coming by air freight (unlikely given your landed cost estimates) delivery time by sea will be more like 6 weeks from when they get around to shipping it
then there will be high probability of paying import juties on top, lets say 10% and then some,
Yep, if over $1000 then you'll be slugged 10% GST, 5% customs duty and then a bunch of other BS fees relating to customs duty, clearance fees, port fees, automation fees, etc etc. I paid over $500 in these extra fees on my last import.

My advice is to add 20% to the price of what you pay to ship them here to cover the above. This will cover the local taxes and any left over you may have can then be deducted from the price of local shipping. People need to be aware than the prices are just estimates until they're physically in your hands and be prepared to have a little extra factored into local shipping to cover it. I dont think you'll get alot of change if any from the 20% margin. If you do, well and good, if not it saves you being personally out of pocket in the mean time.

Now with that out of the way, I'll take a few 19x1.6 to help with numbers :)
As above the locally available tyre options are slim to none unless you want chunky knobbies so you'd be best to order tyres at the same time. Everyone should order the same amount as their rims + a set of spares IMO considering the difficulty in sourcing these.

il be happy to help out E.S. members frst, but i cant wait for the numbers to trickle in so any unaccounted for ill probably sell off on ebay.

not looking to make a profit on this, just get me some cheap rims! :P

with a little luck they keep declared value according to my errr....specifications  if not well, whatever.

i see they also have a V profile available , so iv asked about that too. looks slick.

Think I found a supplier for ten at a time, airfreight is dearer but fast and you dodge the gst on import. Happy to go either way but if you haven't pulled the trigger sing out an I'll share the details.

thats cool. whats the cost/rim stacking up to be that way? would love to know more either way.

airfreight can be nasty, and im not in a hurry so still think ill go the large order. also, just got confirmation they are happy to make a bullshit customs dec :P
so gst is out the window anyway. they have both v profile and wm profile. i might get a mix of both. i like the v profile look.

If it is anywhere near to the excel rims in profile V profile sounds good. Any Picts? Also can you confirm we are looking at 36 spoke holes to suit hubs or are we talking 32?

10 by air works out at 67 bucks aussie each landed.
If I push it to 15 its about 63 bucks.

Sounds like he can do any size, I like fatties. But I didnt ask about the profile yet.
If you give me your costs in yellow I can do the comparison, with ocean freight and import charges.
