AUS/MELB Sanyo NCR18650GA - All Gone!

Post by Lurkin » Apr 29 2016 6:18pm

[All the cells have sold. Thank you all for your support!]

Once again, I'm planning to make an order for high capacity 18650 cells. At this stage, it will be Sanyo NCR18650GA 3500 mAh cells. I could be tempted to similarish cells, LG MJ1 (3500 mah) and Samsung 30Q (3000mah) are also contenders, depending on what others think. In any case, it will be high capacity and decent discharge cells. No pricing can be locked down until I get an idea of how much interest there is and how many to order.

At this stage, I'm interested to hear from anyone in Melbourne who is also interested in these cells, or if you are interested in other cells, those cells. I can arrange freight around Australia, but budget around ~AUD150 for freight on any given capacity. This is not a sale thread, yet. If there is enough interest, I will arrange this to become one.

Please answer the following if you are interested:-

- What cells are you interested in?
- How many are you potentially after?
- whereabouts are you in Australia (I'm in Melbourne) and advise whether you need it freighted to you.

Be careful. I have had a nightmare experience importing 18650's in the last month. Nearly all couriers have stopped sending batteries from China to oz due to a recent regulation change. The alibandits will still take your money and will try to sneak them in through customs only to have them returned time, and time again. Make sure you check out the shipping very carefully to avoid the frustration I have gone through.

Quokka,
....were you importing large quantities (1000's) or just a hundred or so ?
Single cells or assembled into packs ?
Were They fully declared contents , or the old "gift" / " toy parts". type of declaration ?
Just trying to understand what the barrier/limitations are.

In Perth-not interested just yet, but will be in future for smaller volt packs (36/48) around 15ah. So 10-12s/4-5p. Need a spot welder first tho...

I tried to bring in 300 Sanyo ga batteries. When I placed my order I specified lion battery, declared contents as a hazardous material to the seller. But.... This is where the world of shipping in China go's funky. The sellers use a shipping agent who handle the posting and they found with my order that no couriers would ship it to Australia as there was a change to air freight regulations. I know they still ship to the us and Europe, but apparently we got stooged. The shipper then broke my package down in lots of 50 cells and then posted them all through ems.. Pretty dodge. I have recieved 2 parcels but the others were sent back I would reckon at least 10 times. I cracked it at the seller and they have now tried to send the parcel with TNT via another shipping agent. They seem to think it will be fine this time. Will find out this week as I am still 200 cells in the red. I know they will sort out shipping to Australia, might just take longer than you ever imagine possible though :?

Wise advice Quokka.

I will be purchasing the cells from the same vendor I purchased from last time round, no shipping issues likely there... 8)

+1 for it being an epic shit fight trying to get lithium into Aus now by air.
I'm even struggling to get stuff in by sea now with a number of shippers refusing to take them full stop! Anyone would thing they were loosely packed ebola samples we're trying to ship...

Righto, seems like there is enough interested, just sending off pricing enquiries now to start working on pricing/cell decisions. Will keep you all posted as soon as I have numbers/ cell types.

my most recent battery order went ok, (jan16,) but the shipping cost was huge.
i have been thinking recently of the possibility of using new, home storage cells(tesla power wall etc) for ebike battery. discharge rate would be the main thing to look for i guesse, but the price might actually be economical.
has anyone looked into this locally?

The Tesla Powerwall is 7 kWhr rated ,..maybe more in cell capacity, ...but is quoted as $8k unit cost addition with a Solar install package.
That would seem more than a little costly to tear apart for cell groups. ( $9 - $10 per cell ?)
Im not too sure you can just buy a unit by itself either ?
..and i believe there is a bit of a waiting list too. ,!

thats good info. i was sure i had heard quotes for home storage, not sure which brand, but was more like 10kwh @ $5k but perhaps im wrong about that..

the okashira tesla batteries also look good, if you could make the $450 worthwhile with a big order. play cards right might slip under the gst radar too.
those cells are really good i think, perhaps better then 30Q for life span

Just had another quote for a PowerWall unit.
Only available as a "package" ...Battery unit, inverter, and installation.....$10700
Could maybe talk down the installation cost and resell the inverter, but still a lot of $$s for the battery.

Hey all,
I have been thinking of building a power unit on my bike instead of pulling out my LIHVs to charge them.

I have only just started researching what is needed and only have a very basic knowledge atm.
I would be looking for a 48-50 volt system with as much aMh as possible for the room I have.

I am interested in a bulk buy to keep cost down.

worst part is I live in Alice Springs so freight will be a killer

where did you order from/what shipping method?
keep us updated, it'd be good to know if there's a reliable way to ship to aus given the restrictions they're placing on batteries these days

Not to side track, are power tool packs a reasonable source of 18650s ? 5ah 18v x 2 for $200 , that's $8.30 a cell for 2500ah cells, c rating is the question and cell make? I'm basing this on ryobi packs which may be lower c rating ?

Hi I'm interested

I'm new to this and about to order a bbshd and am deliberating about getting a battery at the same time.

Don't know much about making battery packers but that's the point Isn't it

You never said how much each and I will need enough for 52v and 30ah however many that is.

To Tassie

Thanks
Tioli

Cells arrived some time ago, Sanyo NCR18650GA's. I'm yet to test anything as work has been doing its best to kill me in the meantime. The price per cell is AUD5.90 + freight.

- Priority will be given to people in Melbourne and those I have dealt with successfully before.
- Cells are only secured by full payment. Payment is by EFT or cash, EFT being more ideal.
- I've spoken with my freight guy and his rough estimate is AUD150 for out of Victoria, regardless of the number of cells as its dangerous freight.
- I'm happy to drop cells off to people around Melbourne districts. If its out of my way, I may ask for cost reimbursement. This will be agreed upon prior to anything going anywhere.
- These are bare cells, I am not building packs for people. It may cost you more to build a pack yourself or to get someone else to assemble one for you.

Just to be clear guys, happy to drop cells off to people, or meet at a mutually agreed place around Melbourne but there will be no pick ups from my place.
