Liqid cooled hubmotor, >6kW continuous

Post by Linukas » Nov 10, 2017 3:59 pm

Little story from what this began:
some time ago I manufactured electric bike frames with 4Motus brand, unfortunately my designed frames was not so popular and I needed to end production after a few dozen, some of frames I used for custom bikes and one of main things I do not liked, was overheated hubmotors, so I made some different custom liquid cooled motors, tried different brand and models of them, so now I can offer motors that works acceptable, yes, you still can overheat motor (for example even tesla motors is not so difficult to overheat, my friend done this in ~2min :) ), but this hubmotor gives you much bigger continuous power.

some spec:
- size of hubmotor is very similar to mxus 3000w
- stator and magnets 45mm width.
- stator lamination 0.35mm
- axle is 165mm length in dropout place + 32mm thread (M16x1.5) in both sides.
- winding is 3T
- magnets are rated 150C degree.
- windings are potted in compound for good thermal conductivity.
- phase cables are 8awg silicone wires.
- hall sensor wires are with teflon insulation and cable is shielded.
- on request can be placed different temp sensors.
- bearings is FAG brand (Germany)

price for motor is 760€ include 21%VAT. + shiping

if interested please write in PM or find contacts here: http://www.4motus.com/e-cycle-parts/

some photos inside and outside, if you have questions please leave message.

also possible to buy not assembled motor, need bearings, solder wires, seal liquid covers and press axle, price 560€ include 21%VAT. + shiping:

also can offer rosengerber connectors (30A) and other ev parts:

custom made battery packs with custom milled casing from pvc and tesla style fuses on each cell with pure nickel tabs spot welded to cells:

Really interesting products particularly the battery.
The motor should generate some interest with people seeking higher power. Have you tested the motor in one of your frames? Customers would be interested in the results.

some more info about batteries: I use PVC for cells holder, it is milled with cnc and cells are glued in it. I use pure nickel tabs, custom made with fuses:

Sure motors are tested, there was same different iterations for customization, so this is what I got best. Myself assembled couple bikes on 4Motus frames and mostly others are sold stand alone or with controllers, here is one company in my country that assemble bikes with my motors:

As always I like your style Linukas. You do some really nice work. Great Tesla inspired battery. Seems like a well made battery, industrial standard spot welder or laser welded tabs? Those seems so tiny and hard to spot weld.

Maybe some bigger pics of battery? And little more tech details about nickel strip thickness etc. What is the most battery current to be drawn from that battery? You do custom batteries to any size and shapes or do you have a set design for those batteries? Can customers choose any battery, like 18650, 20700 etc.

More info would be welcome.

battery tabs are spot welded, also tried laser welding, but it is not good for production, and even for cells, as laser sometimes go through cell case, couple companies made dozens of welds and after examining them decided to stay with spot weld, it is much safer.

nickel tabs are custom made from pure nickel (0.15mm), fuse starts to get very hot from ~30A, but nickel tabs are custom so different fuses for different applications. I mainly manufacture custom battery sizes, but for example these nickel tabs can be used in different types of size/geometry. sure customer can chose different cells, just need to check what is in stock and what can offer suppliers in that time.
here is whole battery look, it goes in 4Motus frame:

Peak power little bigger than MXUS 45h motors with 3T.
these motors have starting over saturation from ~200A, sure you can push more than that for short time. and peak power depends on voltage you use.

Hello, great project!
Thanks for your contribution.

Can we see somewhere a complete installation with the radiator, pump and pipes? I want to see how it looks like.

I saw the web site you sent with the devil ebikes they look awesome but the radiator pipes and pump are not visible. is it possible to be hidden?

I have a mxus 3K 4T with FF and double hub sinks and it overheats a lot after some time what about this watercooled motor can it handle 5-6KW continually?

Please advice

for pump it can be used a lot different ones:
in devil is used similar to this (just do not know exact model)

but also can be used like this:
