$299 Prototype High Power e-Bike Frame DIY Kit

Post by thinmint » Oct 21 2018 2:12pm

Hi Everyone
A few years ago I began working on a company which aimed to produce premium high power ebikes, with exceptional design and handling characteristics.
After 3 iterations, we settled on the commercial design, had over 30 jigs manufactured to produce 5 frame set prototypes. While the frames were scheduled for delivery in July 2017, our manufacturer failed to deliver on their promised date, and instead finished 5 months later - at which point we had exhausted our funding and decided to focus our efforts elsewhere.
I've had 5 of these frame sets sitting in my warehouse since they were delivered - and since I don't have the time to build them out, I have decided to sell 4 of them on here.

The frame was designed with:
- CNC bent + welded aluminum tube
- Tapered headtube
- Use of schlumpf speed drive (Bottom bracket is NOT threaded)
- 155mm rear dropout width
- Intention to be used with 100 21700 cells

The frame will require some basic fabrication to finish. Namely:
- Add shock attachment points to swingarm and main frame
- Add bolt-on rear dropouts
- Add battery cover (3D printed plastic, or fiberglass layup, or even sheet metal construction)
- Machine rear pivot shaft (very simple piece)

Thanks to the trellis design, each frame set weighs ~3.5kG. Coupled with some high power electronics and batteries, you could have a rigid 14Kw bike that weighs ~30 - 35kG.

Considering all the above, I am offering each frame for $299 + shipping. I will be keeping one of the frames for myself, to finish building at some point in the future, so I will only have 4 frames to sell.

Frames are located in Daytona Beach, FL, USA. Will ship internationally, however buyer must pay cost.

cool frame. It looks like you could tuck a middrive up nicely. What is the geometry of the bike in that pic? How much rear travel? Is that a 26in wheel in the back? Can you fit a plus size tire?

The frame was designed to have the ability to accommodate a mid-drive ;) This was the next step in the process in creating a really exceptional high power bike.

The bike is designed for 26" wheels - The photo shows 26 - 2" but it is designed for 26 - 3" tires.
Rear travel is ~190mm!

What would you call the sizing? It look small, or maybe kinda squatty like a downhill. How tall are you?

Someone from those who bought, received the goods? I paid on February 23. Ask on PM shipping info, but seller not responding.

Yes, I received mine at german customs but I could not take it with me because of EU laws. Product has no manufacturer whos responsible, no framenumbers, no discribtion, no data, etc. Absolut bull**** !

thinmint is not very often online and is not checking mails regularly.

Man... no wonder Britain wants out of EU. Can't you tell them that it's a custom made item with no manufacturer?

Yes I did and that was the problem. Its not possible to import custom made products from private persons. I should have faked datasheets about this frame that they think its from a brand. Then they would have been handling it out to me. The law says that there must be someone responsible if someone gets hurt when product fails etc.
What I learnt, other possibility is to send it via Fed Ex Express for example then the possibility of item beeing controlled is smaller. But of course shipping costs are 2-3 times higher.

Hi
I have one left - its all yours.
Sent you a PM

Unfortunately issues with delivery are outside of my control - I am willing to mark the frame / shipment as whatever is desired, however being in the USA I am unfamiliar with foreign importing regulations. With that said, the rejection at German customs was surprising even to me.

Even if I agree this is complete crap, this is not a EU regulation. I'm in France, and there is no such law in here.
I've been dealing with custom frames at several occasions, no manufacturer or framenumber either and never have I ever had a problem with customs. You've been bullsh*tted quite a bit here. What options did the custom give you ?

I understand I'm of no help, and I'm sorry to hear your misadventure, I hope it will resolve itself !

Well there is such law, I found it. See: 768/2008/EG at R2,R3,R4

DECISIONS ADOPTED JOINTLY BY THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND THE
COUNCIL
DECISION No 768/2008/EC OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL
of 9 July 2008 on a common framework for the marketing of products, and repealing Council Decision 93/465/EEC

Some customs are better informed, some of them are not.

So a handmade art piece/installation (just for decorations), sent by a friend as a gift is not allowed to import?

If its made from a private person, as much as I know: No
When I was at customs, I asked them: What if I put the frame on the wall as decoration and not using it as a bikeframe?
Answer: Its the same thing.

If you have a company then its easier, but also paperwork.

I've read it, and found some points supporting my experience: paragraphs (22), (23), (25), (26) and others clearly mention the fact that the product is placed on the market. Here, you're not importing for resell (you're not a distributor, and not placing anything on the market), but for your own use (one single piece). I don't think this is the same thing. Maybe I'm wrong, but I hope you'll manage to get back your stuff.

Anyway, I sure am glad french customs are not as over zealous as yours. I don't wan't to be rude, but what are the options given by you customs ? None ?

Edit: thinmint mentionned this frame was designed by a company, would it not help in anyway ? Just an idea...

You can read here more specific, but its german https://fpv-community.de/threads/ce-bei ... nen.22168/

I´ve read a lot about it. No chance. No matter if youre a private person using it for private reasons.

They did not give me any options. Just sending it back.

It is a prototype frame, its even more complicated, telling them a company did this as a prototype.

Okay so at least they won't destroy it (I keep thinking this is stupid lawmaking). You could easily get it resent with "proper" paperwork as a retail frame, all hope is not lost !

Just as a curiosity, would it change anything is the bike wasn't a sale trade ? (like idk a gift or even yourself shipping your own frame ? Edit: for the last question, I think it's okay :
Anders gestaltet sich der Fall, wenn eine Privatperson im EU-Ausland ein nichtkonformes Produkt erwirbt und dieses dann selbst in die EU einführt. Hier findet kein Inverkehrbringen statt, da im Gegensatz zu ersterem Fall mit der Einfuhr keine Überlassung im Rahmen einer Geschäftstätigkeit stattfindet
cf linked thread above. So you could basically just ship the bike to yourself, if you were the manufacturer).
