Things could get difficult for Tesla in China as several clones are being developed.
http://www.wired.com/2015/10/attack-of-the-tesla-clones-from-china/#slide-1
In China, though, where non-union labor remains cheap, supply chains are as supple as they are massive, and attitudes toward intellectual property are quite lax, some aspiring auto barons think they can undercut Tesla by, well, ripping off Tesla. These brash entrepreneurs plan to build near carbon copies of the Model S and sell them for significantly less than the real thing......

Probably yes.
I dont know if chinese buyers views local product in the same light as you !
Tesla's sales in China have tanked and these clones etc will have a huge price advantage that will soak up the volume market .....if not the top end rich kids who will still pay a premium for the real thing.

China is VW largest market.... You got it all wrong, the market worships a brand and respects quality. I'd say Chinese carsumer standards are highest than USA because they don't look to highly towards domestic brands and instead idealise euro bands which are really the bees knees of auto

Yea most Chinese folks with money tend to buy BMW, Benz, and Audis... Teslas are in the same price range, why would anyone over there knowingly buy a knockoff? unless it was much much cheaper and they couldn't afford the real thing (thereby losing face).

With the exception of Buick minivans... They love Buicks for whatever reason. It's the only American car I ever see there in quantity.

Well this is exactly what Elon Musk wanted.. He open sourced his patents on Tesla and encouraged competitors to build electric cars.

The business model behind Tesla is like HobbyKings, sell the car at cost and make money on the batteries.
The gigafactory will be a monster.

Given the number of genuine Tesla's bursting into flames, I wonder what the failure rate of the chinese clones will be?
As far as I know, 4 Tesla's have burst into flames out of 80,000 built, which is significantly less than internal combustion cars. The Chinese clones won't burn because they are Vapoware.

Looking at the BYD website the Chinese EVs are on there way...
As for BYD says this "BYD Auto sold a total of 506,189 passenger cars in China in 2013"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_Auto
And that they did 8billion in revenue in USD in 2013. These guys are technically much bigger then Tesla in terms of raw car output and revenue in USD.
Yeah EV car hasn't released yet in USA but it seems its a sure bet its coming soon, check out the utube video of this guy driving around a BYD e6 in the UK as they have been imported for fleet use.

This BYD company has a large investment from Warren Buffet.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_Company ctrl+f "warren"
invested about US$230 million for a 10% (or 9.89%[25]) share of BYD @ HK$8/share.
Can see pictures of Warren Buffet at BYD here,.

The BYD E6 does exist. Not sold in USA.

Besides, now that hoverboards are banned everywhere, they have to do something with the cells that are leftover.

@ricklearned: China build more electric cars than Tesla and Nissan combined in the last 12 months. Just read Green Car Reports.

I have ridden several Honda Grom "electric clone" motorcycles from China, which sell for USD 1,300 on eBay. Compare to $15K to $22K for a Zero electric motorcycle. Look up the threads in other forums, even Americans are happy witht eGrom's/e-groms/gromlins. (It seems that Honda's lawyers don't like anybody saying 'Grom clone', so please say it very quietly ... shhhhh.)

Btw, I don't ride 'cycles with a tailpipe after experiencing breathing problems from a very-high-performance 2-stroke 50cc that kept up with 600cc's, because the 2-stroke gasser caused me some breathing problems at every stoplight, when the cloud of smoke caught up with me.

Having owned nearly 3 dozen electric 'cycles and a fully-electric 4-wheeler, I opine that Chinese products (clones included) are very good, especially for the price. I also have friends in China who own and use their electric cars happily.

Electric vehicles means longer life for the driver/passender .. no exhaust fumes. That is the key.

Some posters on this board are posting mis-information.

Monsanto has a whole department full of dis-info agents, too.

The LeeSEE Chinese Tesla "clone"....

The "smart, connected and self-driving" car will be displayed at this week's Beijing autoshow.

"People questioned our idea, a small IT company building a car to compete with the BMWs and Teslas of the world, and laughed at us. It wasn't easy, but here we are," Jia told Reuters.

LeEco hopes to start producing a version of the LeSEE in a few years at a plant being built near Las Vegas by US strategic partner Faraday Future, in which Jia has invested.

Those cars would be sold in the United States and China. Further ahead, the plan is to produce electric cars in China, too, probably through a partnership with BAIC Motor.

The web-connected electric cars will have a "disruptive" pricing model similar to phones and TV sets LeEco markets in China, Jia says. His company, often called China's Netflix, will sell movies, TV shows, music and other content and services to drivers of its cars. That's why he says "one day our cars will be free". ...

Not bad looking car but still weird, reminds me of back to the future cars.. I found a non paywall article on BBC
http://www.bbc.com/autos/story/20160421-from-china-a-shot-across-teslas-bow

I think vehicle competition is heating up in the world and cars we considered fancy at close to the 100k mark are all now going to sit under the 50k mark in the years to come.. No wonder Ford and GM ditched building cars in Australia.

LOL you think jumping onto the massive incomplete post only minutes after I started it isn't trolling? You know very well how I post.. Your on ES all the time with over 6000 posts, I put a good amount of time into that post because I wanted to share some good information, this forum isn't about you, but that's how your behaving in my opinion.
And again it took me a few edits to finish up what I wanted to say...

I am not that bothered by it, but if you wanted to this thread riddled with crap then mission accomplished :)
cheers

So 100% Chinese parts means 100% Chinese quality, right? You think maybe Elon is shakin' in his boots?

Yup. Elon should be.

In respect to electric scooters, the Chinese have the best. It's proven by sales statistics: 40 million a year made by China.

Those e-Groms (electric Honda Grom clones, called "Boom!" or "Gromlin" are selling so fast, that some dealers are sold out. $1300 USD only.
