Hello all,
This is my first post and it surely wont be the last. I am beginning a conversion project on a Farmall CUB tractor. There are already conversion kits that are being sold and in time I will be coming around to ask questions and maybe if possible do some tweeking and or save a few buck.
The first question I am asking myself concerns the batteries. I am wonderring if lead-acid deep-cycle batteries are the best type of batteries for this type of build. I really like the idea of building my own packs out of 18650's but no one is doing it and there might be a reason for that.
Well i'm off to an other section of the forum to ask about pack building and maintenance.
Thanks all for your time and for sharing your knowledge.

First you have to estimate the battery capacity and performance you need/ want.
For that you will need to establish which motor and controller you will use based on the power needed for your purposes.
That will dictate the voltage and maximum amperage load which will help define the battery requirements.
Also you will need to consider how much run time you want between charges, ..That will determine the Ahr capacity of the battery pack.
FYI.
...nobody "builds" their own "cells" ..that is a highly specialised manufacturing process...
...A battery "Pack" is assembled from multiple "Cells" ...
Lead batteries are rarely the best option for any electric vehicle, due to their size , weight, and poor life expectancy.

This may be of some interest to you...

Thanks for correcting me on the battery pack building part. (i'll edit my original post)

I see that there is more threads about tractors than what I had found. I have to change the way I'm searching for these.

From what I was able to understand the build you linked me to are using golf cart batteries, my guess is that they are regular deep cycle batteries. Are these not also lead-acid?

Some examples here:http://www.valleyoaktool.com/electric-tractors/

Weight shouldn't be an issue and can be necessary on a heavier towing/transport type vehicle such as a farm tractor or forklift. IMHO it would be better to retain the classic IH CUB (mini Farmall) look for show. 8)

Yes they are lead acid.
You will find there are many options for battery(cell) types, each with their pro's and con's.
Lead is old tech with many con's and few pro's, The one most mentioned is cost, but depending on your intended use, that is often incorrect due to the limited cycle life compared to other battery types.
