Ultralight vehicles can be very efficient, and kept to sensible speeds below 55 mph, would solve many problems. Unfortunately, most people's idea of a car is based on a century of deadly, and totally unsustainable vehicles. Typical "green" car site discussions center around how soon we will have 300 kWh battery powered SUVs, so we can haul our ski boat to the lake.

I am looking forward to that. Not because we need to haul ski boats to the lake, but because that will make electric trucks a possibility - and that will end a big source of pollution in the US. (Also, when it comes to reducing CO2 emissions, getting EV SUV's out there has more of an impact than getting subcompact EV's out there.)
 
^^^ Hehe... Perhaps I misunderstand? But probably being hit/run over by an electric SUV WILL be more Eco-Friendly. Yup.

I guess that depends on the capacity of your battery ?...
5sqm of solar wont get a car and 5 passengers up a long hill.....no matter how aerodynamic it is. !

Watt? You assumed they weren't rolling down hill with tail winds? ... and with a family of "midgets" (short folks that don't weigh much)? With a freshly charged, "full" (and a "new" pack "gently broken in")? AND on a clear, full-sunny day???

i wonder if they have actually driven that 1000km on one battery charge, and how long it took to complete, or if its a theoretical possibility. ?
Also, i noticed they are entering in the Solar challenge in Australia, so i will follow their performance with interest.

Physicists, who have looked at this problem on a bigger scale, think it is a waste of time we don't have. Like masterbating, this stuff makes us feel good for a bit, but doesn't actually accomplish anything. :)

^^ Watt he said. Re Stella Vie... Hard to pedal? One might pedal for warmth and for exercise... and in "EV Terms" to shave off peak battery outputs at starts, up hills, etc. So the cells ("battery") ain't "taxed" so much... More ranges per charge plus the cells last longer before final recycling/replacement/repurposing wattEVer. It's about lowest costs per mile/kilometer overall.

EDIT: And my favorite vehicles don't roll with empty seats plus lots of (empty) cargo space. Implied more vehicle weight anyway.

EDIT (again): AND sure very aerodynamic... but aero becomes more of a factor at faster "highway speeds" or strong headwinds. In crowded urban environments full of stop-and-goes at slower speeds... counts for about ZERO.

Depends what your goal is. If your goal is reducing CO2 emissions and fossil fuel usage, then replacing a 16MPG Suburban with an EV does a heck of a lot more than replacing a 29mpg Nissan Sentra with an EV. That's just plain math.

If your goal is "ending the reign of the evil SUV" or "giving the finger to those rich suburbanites" or some such then you are going to have different considerations.
 
If your goal is to reduce CO2 then you need to reduce CO2. Check this graph.

Clearly, economic slowdown reduces CO2. For the transportation sector, as with all sectors, it has started inching back up...despite the "boom" in EVs/PV/wind.
