Razor E300s upgrade

Post by shinyballs » Jun 13, 2016 10:50 pm

Got a good deal for this scooter on Craigslist. The motor barely turns unloaded, I'm guessing the SLA battery is likely dead.
Planning to use 10s6P Panasonic 18650PF at 36V, which can easily fit in the case. Replace the front wheel with a 10" BLDC ungeared hub motor.
It's going to be built for torque - riding up steep hils, and limit the top speed to 20mph. I read that the band brake is weak and don't last, so will be using regen on the front motor. For now, will just use the stock motor.
Any recommendations for a 10" front hub motor? Also, where to find a good quality but cheap 36V dc brushed controller for the stock motor?

Well, first off, you didn't give us any idea what you really wanted. I'd say with an 800w or higher hub, you can forget the motor that's on it. That's too small for anything particularly powerful.

The Dropouts for that motor is 139mm - too wide, based from several sellers specs. The scooters' fork dropout width is 115mm. There's very limited choices for 10 inch hub motors that can fit. So, I'll be getting a 12" hub and will have to extend the fork by 1 inch. So far, I've found these -

They are probably the same motor.

Seller Green E-motion from Aliexpress sent me some info about their 12" motor. It's made for the rear, but I don't see any problem using it on the front.

those motors are cool. Do they have any with a bit more power? 500Watts plus?

The motor has arrived and will paint the insides and add vent holes; I may try Ferro Fluid. When ran as stock, I think no more than 500 watts is a safe limit for this motor.
Does anyone know of a good alternative to chromoly tubing that can be MIG welded? It seems that TIG is the preferred way to weld it - which I don't have.

I think standard mild steel is fine if you're mig welding, you could buy another set of e300 forks and cut them up. I'd also suggest putting a slug (solid steel rod with the same OD as the ID of the forks) in the fork tubes for added strength. Cool project can wait to see it run.

Opened the motor, the inside looks crappy. The magnets are dirty and corroded, rusted bearings, some oxidation on the windings and 2 magnets on the rotor are chipped.
Did they sent me a used motor?! The seller is Green E-motion. I'll dispute the transaction. Has anyone tried AliExpress dispute with good results?

Has it spent its life by the sea in storage for many a year ?, By the pics looks like the magnet adhesive has corroded the alloy so the magnets can't be held on the best, thats gutting never nice when a project goes a bit wonky, when you get there with your hub motor it be worth the weight, the razor is a good frame set up its super light and a nice feeling ride and the battery box fits 3 × 4s 16ah multistars with a bit of space left over.

Everything about this scooter is crap except the frame. Cleaned, painted and vented the motor ; just warm when ran continuously for 1Kw. The fork broke twice. So, I inserted a pipe inside the tube and welded the bottom edge and drilled 2 self-tapping screws on the front and back. Have been riding it for more than 5,000 miles.

Top speed: 20mph
Battery: 10s7p Panasonic PF ; no bms
Combined Peak power: 59 Amps 2,049 Watts 33.5V sag

Motor setup#1: aftermarket 24V brushed, stock controller, twist throttle
Motor setup#2: Kelly KBS72101 w/ regen, 12" bldc hub, thumb throttle

Charger: 2 Lenovo psu, Meanwell ELN-30-5 in series @ 41.6V, 5A - onboard

Rear tire: Primo Durotrap Foam Filled Wheelchair tire, size: 10 x 3 in. (3.00-4)

Others:
Turnigy Watt meter
XT90-S Anti-Spark Connector
80 tooth sprocket
36V led headlight
Sunlite wire basket mounted to a modified bike rear rack
Maxi-fuse and holder

If you could fit another identical hub motor on the rear, that thing could really fly.

Or since it's already set up with a chain drive to the back wheel, just buy an inrunner that will fit in the space of the original motor.
