Metos's project - VANGUARD | VESC | 6390 3.5KW 170KV | 12S

Post by metos » Jul 13 2016 6:34am

Hello

I'm new to esk8 community. I discovered esk8 with the Casey Neistat videos on youtube.
And as I'm a maker more than a buyer, I started to search how to build one
I'm french, living in Paris France and I joined the community e-sk8.fr with their great forum.

I'm posting my project here to share it with non french speaking people.
getting advices and giving inspiration and feedback.

I choose the Loaded Vanguard to match the boosted board design.
I first wanted to go for a dual rear motos/vesc but this is to much money for a first try.
So I get a massive 3.5Kw 6390 from Alien.
http://alienpowersystem.com/shop/brushl ... 0kv-3500w/

Here is my build spec

- Deck : Loaded Vanguard flex 3
- wheels : Kegel Orangatang 80A
- Trucks : Caliber 2 50° black
- ESC : VESC esk8.de
- Motor : Alien 6390 3.5Kw 170Kv
- Batteries : 12S 5Ah (4x 3S1P 5000mAh) Lipo
- Mount : Home made + alien caliber adaptors
- Gear ratio : 36/14
- switch : antisparks esk8.de
- charger : 2x IMAX B6

Hi metos,

Nice board, look forward to seeing the end result.
Personally I think you made a very wise choice in motors. That is a huge and heavy motor, but still far less than two 63mm motors.
I cannot see you needing any more power than that, my single 6374 170KV does me just fine on 8S so your 6390 170KV on 12S will be amazing.
The only consideration I have is the power, while accelerating uphill, to drive that thing may be a bit much for the VESC - I know mine strained (heat) on 8S, maybe on 12S it will be fine. I hope so.
Have fun.

Pretty sweet setup you got there. What range are you getting with this setup?

Did you finish your build?, I mean did you maka the enclosure?

Hello

I made enclosure for batteries but not yet for vesc and switch.
I dont have enough time to finish the build for now, but the board works well anyway.

Here is the current state

What kind of current are you pushing to the motor? You may notice the board begins to feel sluggish after a few minutes of riding as the VESC will most likely overheat and start limiting the current to the motor in that enclosure. I would recommend installing an external heatsink that contacts some of the FETs or a vent for air flow. The only problem with the latter is that it won't do well with water. Looks like a fun build!
Cheers!

I experienced this behaviour

I tried something like that

my final enclosure for the Vesc is not done, so I will include air flow opening to cool the Vesc, but that must not let dust and water going inside.
