electric skateboard motor and controller matching

I own 2 electric skateboard hub motors that was purchased by my friend, and he forgot to get the specification of the motor. I'm trying to make a boosted board replica with bamboo longboard and 90MM wheels(same with the hub motor). Now I don't know if it's fine to directly connect my hub motors with my controller in case it has different running voltage. I'm afraid my hub motors are 36v while my controller is specified as 24v. So i it safe to run higher voltage motor with a smaller voltage controller and/or vice versa? Thanks
