Electric Lazair Takes Flight

Post by mauimart » Jun 01 2011 7:56pm

An electric powered Lazair ultralight aircraft recently completed its maiden voyage. It is equipped with two Turnigy CA120-70 motors and Zippy batteries among other RC components. The full thread can be found at:

Very cool indeed.

Wow.

From 1:10 models..
To 1:8 models..
To 1:5 models...

Now, they're flyin' 1:1 RC models.
Efficiency is everything :bolt:

My first major build: 8T MAC motor on a Trek 4500.
The new all-arounder: Leafmotor 1500w on a Turner O2 full suspension.
The monster scooter: ? on a Cannondale Semi Recumbent.

Re: Electric Lazair Takes Flight - Now with Joby Motors

The creator of this plane has switched from Turnigy to Joby motors and added some floats. Read more about it at the RC Group.
Extremely cool.

I see that the pilot is using the motors for turning and that made me wonder if one motor failed what would happen. If both motors turned one propeller that might be safer. But this guy sold 1200 with 2 stroke engine so I suppose he knows what he is doing.

Looks like he was looking at methods LVC/HV modules, according to the most recent posts around page 13 ^_^. (Says even the tiny power draw of those was too much. I'm somewhat surprised.)
New to endless-sphere? Notice a lot of signatures recommending Ebikes.ca? That's because it's the best place for a quality and manageable, (but still 'real'), first build. Justin is a solid supporter of electric bike development, and a good source of equipment.

2012 Update #1
--------------------------------------
Well, after another trip across the country and back in my RV8 to visit JOBY and others in the San Francisco area, I have convinced myself that I will have a continuing supply of EIG cells and motors at a reasonable cost.

Now on to the next order of business and that is to finance the startup of this new venture.

I have done enough costing analysis to determine that the target price of a complete eLazair kit (less batteries) will be about $20,000 and a fully assembled eLazair will be about $25,000 plus batteries.

Battery pricing will be $5-6,000 for packs with about 1 hour of flight endurance and with at least 1,000 flight hours of cycle life.

So, if you want to own a new eLazair with a coveted low serial number (serial #E0001 and up are now available), you can send a deposit of $5,000 to be held in escrow until your eLazair ships.

And/0r, if you would be interested in investing money in this new venture we can talk about that too.

Either way, just Private Message me or contact me at kci at vaxxine dot com.

I wonder if this means that EIG cells might be available to the general public at reasonable cost?????
