Forget about shocks. Unsprung weight? not an issue... PSI? wasting your breath. Disks or calliper? Whatever...

Think you're fast? Your EV really flies? How sad...

These EVs really, really fly, and they've traded in a lot of your EV worries for 30 square yards of silk and string...
:)

Just fwd'ing a msg I sent to the EVDL. Thought some here might find of interest.

Tks

Subject: [EVDL] Electric Aircraft (powered paragliders aka ePPGs)
Just wish to update this thread from last April :
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/evdl_post_archive/message/2249

Jeff Goin maintains a beautiful website about these electric aircraft
here:
http://www.electricppg.com/index.htm

Point is, for these airborn EVs, things have been happening fast since
last April...

Production plans here:
http://www.electricppg.com/Developments/NeilAndrews/index.htm

And Yuneec International, Ltd. touting their gorgeous second generation
ePPG concept here:
http://www.electricppg.com/Developments/yuneec/index.htm

Quite a scaling up of their current product offering:
http://www.geekalerts.com/robocopter-indoor-rc-helicopter/
:)

EVers that concern themselves w/motor copper content may enjoy the ePPG
motor and winding pics at the bottom of this page:
http://www.sinusleistungssteller.de/stand.html

As they say, EVer onwards and upwards (here, literally!)

hehe...

Related to non-powered parag's:
"The most commonly occurring accident scenario is an asymmetric collapse leading to a spiral while flying close to the ground"

So just be sure to offer rides whenEVer possible:
"There were no tandem fatalities in 2005, and there has only been one known tandem fatality in the US in the past 15 years. Passengers are more likely than the instructor to be injured in tandem accidents. Since the passenger is in front of the instructor, they often fall to the ground with the instructor landing on top of the passenger. This cushions the instructor from injury, but may increase the risk to the passenger."

from here:
http://ushpa.aero/safety/PG2005AccidentSummary.pdf

So, yah, aerobatics while circling the Tim Hortons fly-thru would be dangerous...

BTW, my only interest in the ePPG efforts is about how the tech might be applied to a marine version of Bill Bruder's Wind Wagon:

Where have I seen that before?

Bruders buggy runs offa lead though... looks like that antique ran off leaded...
;)

tks for the pic though. Likely the vehicle would have some stories if it could talk.

Dunno if this old thread will EVer get pruned out of existance but would one of the Mods here kindy move it into the forum for flyers please?

(Nothing new to add to this thread so I'll just add something old:)

:)

I've seen someplace small chutes that auto-deploy when something goes wrong and you start spiraling down. For those that "worry too much." :)

I'm very interested. I use to fly paragliders but haven't flown in 2 years now. I'd love to get into a powered setup but I hate the noise of the gas powered motors (no worries about restarting when you shut it off to thermal) and loved thermaling and ridge soaring with nothing but wind power. I wonder what the price point will be. A good gas setup is 7-10k.

zombiess,
check out the Electric Airplanes forum here:

...a lot of the threads are about ePPGs etc... Still hoping this old thread will get moved over there...

What an excellent city commuter bike! Nice whirling propeller - no one will tailgate you and the wide open exhaust, that keeps everything simple! Heck, why not go for a radial engine? :D

At least this one is safer with the fan guard. :D

These are some great old pictures though.
