Hall sensor. I think I give the voltage range in the linked thread, but not sure.
I have tried to find the same thing in potentiometer, and can't. If you run across one, please link it; I have a couple of things I'd really prefer a pot for (so I can have the full ground-to-+V range rather than having to offset / convert a hall range to the full range).

Looks similar, never had one so can't say how it works or how well, etc.
They give no specifications or information of any kind on that page for it, so no way to tell anything about it with any certainty. (doesnt' even say if it is water resistant/etc)
