What are the largest/best/most active communities for alternative energy ? Preferable with DIY focus like building windmills and solar stuff?

I am also interested in this pursuit. Don't give up, hopefully someone will chime in with something. I'm interested in living in the south and west in USA, like Ca or Co maybe, but I'm open to suggestions. I heard about a place I assume was in the west, seemed like somewhat of a desert area and their homes were called "earth ships". Wish I could remember where it was located.

An Earthship is a radically sustanable building made of recycled materials.

An Earthship is defined by the following 6 principles:

- Thermal/Solar Heating & Cooling
- Solar & Wind Electricity
- Contained Sewage Treatment
- Built with Natural & Recycled Materials
- Water Harvesting
- Food Production

An Earthship is a new kind of building, a new kind of architecture. It is so new, we call it Biotecture. But we have been doing this for 40 years. An Earthship is a building that will take care of you, while still being sustainable, affordable, strong and logical.

Earthship Biotecture is a design/construction company in Taos, NM, USA. We travel the world building Earthships as well as here in America. Join us at the Earthship World Headquarters... stay a while, build with us. How many Earthships can we build together?

Search also for "Kins Domains".

Russian author Vladimir Megre wrote the Ringing Cedars series of books that, in part, highlight the Russian Dacha movement and expand it to spiritual permaculture. The Kins Domain is a 1 hectare plot of land that is completely self-sustainable and provides food for more than a full family.

The editor of the English versions of the books, Leonid Sharashkin, is (was?) working on a Doctorate in the Univ. of Missouri system. Here's one of his papers and his PhD dissertation:

ECOFARMING AND AGROFORESTRY FOR SELF-RELIANCE:
Small-scale, Sustainable Growing Practices in Russia
We then explore what we see as the future of Russian microfarming in the emerging Russia-wide Ringing Cedars movement. Participants in this movement advocate an even greater integration of trees in the dacha agroecosystems, diversification of production, and using microscale farming as a vehicle for sustainable rural development. In conclusion, we draw parallels with microscale agriculture in the US, to comment on the role agroforestry could play in encouraging wider adoption of these practices

THE SOCIOECONOMIC AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF
FOOD GARDENING IN THE VLADIMIR REGION OF RUSSIA
When I started researching the outwardly simple question of how and why the majority of Russian families were growing their own food, the project did not seem to promise any big discoveries. Indeed, I already knew that over 50% of Russia’s agricultural output was coming from family garden-plots. That already sounded spectacular enough to overshadow any new findings I might come up with. However, the research did yield many results that — apart from their importance in the academic field — were also deeply transformative for me on both the professional and personal level.

While all replies has been very interesting what I was thinking about was online communities/forums , ie what are the endless-spheres of alternate energy.
Sorry for being unclear.

No worries! Here are some fun cyberspace hang-outs. :)

Hands down the best is an on-going index called
http://www.builditsolar.com/

They have many links with a paragraph for each. You have to scan the provided links to find the pearls amongst the oysters. However, for wind electrical generation the clear best is Fieldlines.com (forum) and otherpower.com (both the same website), with thebackshed.com coming in a close second.

Mother Earth magazine has a website, with an archive of their magazine articles that is very useful (40 years worth?).

I don't know if you could call it a community, but the best online source for do-it-yourself solar is www.builditsolar.com
