Practical considerations aside, is there any efficiency benefit from running a wind turbine in a duct?

Hehe... from June 2013, from my own (new to me) neighbourhood: "Scarborough could have been home to wind turbines in lake: Toronto Hydro"
http://www.insidetoronto.com/news-story ... nto-hydro/

"monthly wind speed measurements Toronto Hydro released this week.
The measurements are from an anemometer the utility installed a kilometre off East Point Park in Lake Ontario."

"Built to record wind speeds at a 90-metre height, the device was as hated by many area residents as the idea of an offshore wind farm - up to 60 turbines two to four kilometres into the lake - the anemometer could have supported by gathering data from June 2010 to August 2012."

"Toronto Hydro summary data, average monthly wind 7.4 metres per second."

EDIT: From Feb, 2011 "Ontario government suspends all offshore wind turbine projects"
http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/02/12 ... -projects/

Crazy Engineers... Go BIG (or go home.)

More from 2011: "Scarborough Bluffs residents determined to fight wind turbine project"
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/tor ... le4189179/

Hehe. "the Don Quixotes of the Scarborough Bluffs are dead set against"

May interest: "There's an 80-fold increase in wind turbines happening across Ontario"

Plan B (on list): A whole bunch of anemometers (throw one/two manometers on there too. Gawds, some may love the smell of mercury in the morning.)

(Watt can also sometimes power "distress" bird sounds - when winds "pipe up".)

Move over Savonius. (New game in town.) The (much tapped about lately) Spanish "Vortex Bladeless" wind turbine. For example on Wired magazine:
http://www.wired.com/2015/05/future-wind-turbines-no-blades/
Instead of capturing energy via the circular motion of a propeller, the Vortex takes advantage of what’s known as vorticity, an aerodynamic effect that produces a pattern of spinning vortices. Vorticity has long been considered the enemy of architects and engineers, who actively try to design their way around these whirlpools of wind. And for good reason: With enough wind, vorticity can lead to an oscillating motion in structures, which, in some cases, like the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, can cause their eventual collapse.

If one wants to experiment with wind power, fine. But if you're really trying to make your own power, solar will outperform wind many, many times over. While making no noise. And not needing a tall tower, short towers are a waste of time. Or having any moving parts what will wear and need attention. I have had several different wind turbines over the last 35 years, and have one now, along with a large solar installation. With the reduced cost of solar modules, it is a no brainer, they will last the rest of your life and require no maintenance. Says the guy who was off grid for 28 years and now grid tied (100%, more, in that I have an annual surplus of power) for 9 years.

The only place a wind turbine makes sense these days, is on a off grid system, on a windy winter night, that's when they are worth the hassle.

Amusing... I've sailed vehicles ("boats") that weighed thousands of pounds powered entirely by solar (wind) power... most of the time, for thousands of miles. Most of the area of the foils ("sails") were down close to the water surface level. Hadn't thought at that time to store all this "free" energy, but some sailors, especially cruising sorts do this all the time:
Image

One sailor asks "Wind Generator vs Solar Panels For Your Boat?":
https://www.emarineinc.com/Wind-Generator-vs-Solar-Panels-Which-is-Better-For-Your-Boat

And of course, these "sails" can look sort of "strange"?
Image

Oh. That's on dry land. Sorry.

http://www.bluebird-electric.net/Bluebird_Boats_Ships_Systems/bluefish_wind_energy_vector_harvesting_autonomous_radio_controlled_ship_tank_test_model.htm

... and this can't be right?:
Image
Pic caption:
The Google sponsored Blackbird (faired on the left, bare chassis on the right) which in 2010 successfully achieved more than 2 times the speed of the wind downstream, then in 2011 reached close to 3 times the speed of wind, suggestive that into the wind 1.5 times the speed of the wind is theoretically possible for the Bluefish ZCC, save that water drag is much higher than road drag from bearings and wheels. Don't try this at home children.

Can't be right either...

Re: Savonius rotor (generator)

Postby Ianhill » Wed Sep 14, 2016 8:52 am

Iceland's tech looks good as it can spin in any wind condition, its all well a traditional turbine having high efficiency but when the winds at its strongest (most energy in the air) the things have to be shut down so the savonious looks a much better choice in harsh conditions coupled with an axial flux overlapping stator resined then vacummed into carbon fibre then it becomes a game changer like the bus stop that runs for 48 hours back up no wind with 70inch TV, WiFi, phone chargers etc then only needs a slight breeze to get a fairly steady charge current.
Though solar will give better results in wales at least 3/4 if the time its overcast and raining but windy so the savonious is still a good option.
The power generated needs to be considered too compared to a traditional steam alternator renewables output fluctuates a lot so it has to be used in multiples wind and solar in conjunction with energy storage (battery) to smooth it out and make it usable.

^^^ Yup.

Oh oh. There's that word "traditional" used again (twice), watt may make some... nervous. :)

The "Greenies" probably worry about bird strikes with this different wind gen stuff (while millions of animals - some human - are injured and killed EVery day on the roads and highways...).

Personal note: Crazy Welsh. One of my ancestors a Welsh gunner for the English in 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo. (Then (assumed Protestant guy) shipped off to Fintona (small town in Northern Ireland) to beat down those darned Papists... before finally escaping to the colonies in Beaver Land.

EDIT: Operative word here maybe is "cheap". As in DIY ES tradition. (Oooops. Used *that* word again. Sorry)

What are you actually trying to do, Lock ?? If you want to mess around with wind, look for junk clothes washers and see if they have a pancake shaped motor. Fisher & Paylel, LG, Whirlpool are all brands that have these, maybe others ? Should be free or close to it, if you remove it yourself. Get the short drive shaft that has splines and fits the splines in the rotor, also.

Youtube has videos on how to manipulate windings to get lower voltages at lower RPM's. These are PM motors and have very little cogging. Would work for Savonius type as well as prop driven type wind machines. Don't need a lot of output, these can work well for charging batteries.

Hehe... You DIY guys... and here's me with plenty of tools (not really. But can ya ever have enough? hehe), and hands that don't work so well any more. [sigh]

Much of my life I've been a Lazy guy (Capital "L" there.). Preferring to make (lots of) money... sometimes, to have to pay others for "off the shelf" stuff. Any business that doesn't need records for "tax purposes"?... "financing", etc? (think "accountant needed")

So yah. I want to "mess around" with solar via wind. Cost to buy solar cells still dropping, but in a "traditional" sense (oh oh) I'm thinking windmills in some form and fashion as even cheaper long-term (don't degrade in the same way. And how do you fix THOSE cells when at end of useful life after outputs have "degraded").

Good thought re F&P, etc pancake motors though. Must "file away" fer now.

Partly watt I "need" is collapsible/portable. Having been a traveler all my life. Moving from town to town, etc.
(Old habits maybe die hard.)

... watt makes the Micro Wind Turbine (above in this thread) kinda interesting as I'm a "low consumption" (of electricity) guy anyway. (Like? Currently living in a room with one 15W high-effic. light bulb. Boiling/cooking stuff in a "tiny" 450W microwave "oven".)

"Youtube has videos on how to manipulate windings to get lower voltages at lower RPM's." Cool. Must investigate.
