Help! My 1st gen Crystalyte hub motor died

Hey guys, I have an old Jamis Dakar mountain bike with a first generation Crystalyte CT4840 hub motor in the back wheel that I think I smoked the motor on. I was going up a steep hill full speed for about 6 minutes before I killed it. I'm not sure if it is easy to fix (or if it's even worth) but would like to hear any suggestions of where to start with a DIY diagnosis and repair.

Specs:

Crystalyte CT4840

12 FET 3077 Mark II Extreme Modder LYEN Edition Controller

Open up the side cover and take a deep sniff in, you'll know if you cooked the motor.

crystalyte, id look at the motor cable where it passes through the axle and bearing

Here is a link to basic electrical troubleshooting of your motor with a multi-meter. May give an idea of which direction to pursue.

I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Here is what it looks like....
Actually maybe those wire casing are melted, so you sir might be right.
