POSTED: 08/14/17, 8:08 AM PDT | UPDATED: 2 HRS AGO
A hit-and-run driver struck two bicyclists, killing one of them, early Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, on Long Beach Boulevard at Bort Street in North Long Beach.
A bicyclist died after he jumped onto an SUV and tried to stop its driver from fleeing from the scene of a crash in North Long Beach early Monday morning, according to authorities.
Police said two bicyclists were riding along Long Beach Boulevard at the 91 Freeway off-ramp when a 2000 Ford Expedition hit one of them around 1:50 a.m.
After the crash, the second bicyclist jumped onto the SUV’s running board and reached through the driver’s window to try to turn off the ignition, police said.
But the driver sped off with the man still hanging on, according to authorities. When the SUV made a sharp turn at Bort Street, the bicyclist was thrown off and landed in the street where he hit his head on a curb, police said.
“That person came off the vehicle and was severely injured by what they struck on the street and was deceased at the scene,” Long Beach Police Lt. Mark Coble said.
The driver then stopped the car near Long Beach Boulevard and W. Adams Street and took off into the neighborhood on foot where he disappeared, according to police.
The other bicyclist struck by the SUV wasn’t seriously hurt, according to authorities. Medics treated him at the scene, Coble said.
Police didn’t identify the man who died but said he was a 51-year-old Los Angeles resident.
Authorities didn’t have any description of driver available.
“Unknown on the suspect at this point,” Coble said. “But we do have the vehicle that was involved in this collision.”
Authorities shut down a stretch of Long Beach Boulevard at Bort for a few hours while they investigated, but it reopened shortly after 6 a.m.
Police said they’re still looking for anyone who witnessed the crash. They asked that anyone with details contact Detective Brian Watt at (562) 570-7355.

Laguna Beach driver suspected of hitting bicyclist and trying to hit another, police say
BY HANNAH FRY
August 14, 2017, 12:40 p.m.
A 53-year-old man was arrested in Laguna Beach on Saturday on suspicion of hitting a bicyclist with his car two days earlier and trying to hit another, police said.
Laguna Beach police responded to a report of a disturbance at 9:42 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Bluebird Canyon Road and South Coast Highway.
Witnesses told officers that a motorist struck a man riding a bicycle. When confronted by another bicyclist, the driver tried to run him over and then drove off, police said. The condition of the man who was hit wasn’t known.
Detectives got a description of the motorist and identified a possible suspect, whom witnesses picked out in a photo lineup, police said.
Officers pulled over Kevin O’Neill of Laguna Beach on Saturday and arrested him on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the case.
O’Neill was booked into the Theo Lacy jail in Orange with bail set at $25,000, according to jail records.

Bicyclist who ran the traffic light is killed in northeast Fresno crash
BY LEWIS GRISWOLD AND MARC BENJAMIN
AUGUST 15, 2017 12:28 PM
UPDATE: The Fresno County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the bicyclist as Kenneth Gregory Cook, 51, of Fresno.
Fresno police are investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist who reportedly rode through a red light at Cedar and Nees avenues in northeast Fresno and was hit by cross traffic.
The crash was reported at 12:01 p.m., according to Fresno County Emergency Medical Services.
Witnesses said a man was riding a red bicycle south on Cedar when he rode through a red light and collided with a white car traveling east on Nees. Police say the man’s identification indicated he was 51 years old and from Merced.
“He went right through the red light,” said witness Mike Accardo of Clovis. He was moving at about 25 mph, Accardo said.
The collision caused part of the car’s windshield to cave in and the driver stopped at the corner.
The driver of the Honda Accord was a woman from Clovis with four children, who were returning from haircuts and lunch when the collision occurred, said Fresno police Lt. Mike Brogdon.
He said she cooperated with police investigators and is blameless in the crash.
The bicyclist was thrown to the pavement. He was taken to Saint Agnes Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about 20 minutes later, Brogdon said.
The crash caused major traffic delays around the busy northeast Fresno intersection. Traffic was diverted for a couple of hours.

A city notorious worldwide for bike incidents.

SINGAPORE - Despite a large sign at the main entrance of nearby Yishun Junior College reminding motorists to look out for pedestrians, he did not stop his lorry at the stop line.
As a result of failing to keep a proper lookout for others, Thanabal Balachandar, 25, hit cyclist Zhu Jinfu, 54, causing his death.
On Wednesday (Aug 16), the Indian national was jailed for four weeks and banned from driving for five years for negligently causing death.
Mr Zhu was riding a power-assisted bicycle along the Yishun Ring Road footway when the accident happened on Aug 31, 2016.
He was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital where he died from multiple injuries at 6.10pm that day.
The court heard that at about 10am on the day of the accident, Thanabal was driving out of the school compound to collect construction materials when he failed to stop at the stop line. He was then working as a driver for a design company.
Although he was not driving fast, Thanabal's lorry collided into Mr Zhu, who was cycling from the driver's left to right.
Thanabal said he had failed to notice the cyclist.
An autopsy report stated that Mr Zhu had sustained multiple rib fractures, injuries to his head and bruises on his limbs.
The maximum penalty for causing death by doing a negligent act is two years' jail and a fine.

A 46-year-old Federal Way man is charged with child assault after allegedly pointing a loaded gun at an 11-year-old boy riding his bicycle near his house.
The boy was riding his bike in the 29600 block of 22nd Avenue South about 9:45 p.m. Aug. 6 when he was a man exit a blue Subaru parked at a nearby house, Federal Way Police Detective Matthew Novak wrote.
The man allegedly walked toward the boy in the middle of the street and said, "Hello."
The boy said, "hello" in return, reports say.
The man then lifted his left hand from behind his hip, exposing a black handgun, and pointed the weapon at the boy, according to Novak's account.
The boy said the man pointed the gun at him from about three feet away and that he feared for his life and peddled away as quickly as he could, the incident report says.
The boy biked to a friend's apartment and told his friend's mother what happened. the mother called 911 and the boy's father.
Officers responded to find the boy "scared" and "crying," Novak wrote.
Cops searched the address where the incident occurred and connected the home to a man named Nathan Johnson. They showed the boy a photo of Johnson and he identified him as the man who pointed a gun at him.
Officers summoned Johnson from the home and arrested him.
"There aren't even any guns in the house," Johnson allegedly claimed. "This is ridiculous."
Novak wrote that Johnson "had an overwhelming odor of alcohol and appeared extremely intoxicated. Police took him to the county jail in Kent.
Johnson's brother, who also lives at the home, told officers his brother was "having a tough time in life and was very angry lately," according to the incident report.
Officers observed loose bullets in Johnson's car through the window, as well as empty beer cans on the driver's side floor board, court records indicate.
A search of Johnson's bedroom yielded a loaded black handgun with a bullet in the chamber beside his bed. Cops also found two other loaded guns stored in boxes: a 12-gauge shotgun and AR-15 style rifle. They were legally owned, but seized as evidence, Novak wrote.
Johnson is now charged with second-degree child assault and remains jailed on $100,000 bail.

ALMA, MI -- A 64-year-old nun has died after being injured in a hit-and-run crash while out riding her bike Thursday morning.
Sister Joseph Marie Ruessmann, who belonged to the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, was pronounced dead at an out-of-county hospital Thursday, Aug. 17, said Alma Police Detective Jason Biehl.
Biehl said Ruessmann was riding her bike about 7:30 a.m. Thursday on Michigan Avenue near Williams Street when an unknown vehicle struck her and then drove off.
Police were notified of the hit-and-run when someone called dispatch to report a woman lying on the side of the road, Biehl said.
Ruessmann was taken from the scene to a Gratiot County hospital but was later transferred to a Midland County hospital, where she died, the detective said.
Anyone with information about the fatal hit-and-run is asked to call Biehl at 989-463-8317.
A Facebook post by the Nativity of the Lord Parish, which serves Alma, called for prayers and announced the funeral would likely be held Monday.
"Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Joseph Marie RSM (Religious Sisters of Mercy) who died today from injuries resulting from a hit and run car accident this morning in Alma," the post read. "Pray for her family, for the other (Religious) Sisters of Mercy, and for the operator of the vehicle."

Tony Petros has seen a lot as a cyclist and former Newport Beach city councilman.

But he’s not likely to forget a recent Wednesday evening ride on Pacific Coast Highway by Mariner’s Mile, when a pickup truck jumped from the leftmost lane and toward his bicycle.

“Young kids started screaming (‘butt dart’) at me,” Petros said. “They kept doing it, and it wasn’t funny.”

ADVERTISING

The “butt dart” stunt — an act of pointing a finger gun, making a shooting noise and yelling at cyclists — has gained traction recently on social media. As silly as the act may seem, Orange County cyclists say it has them intimidated.

Now, a law firm is considering filing a harassment suit on behalf of several affected cyclists against Chad Towersey, the man who started it all.

“What we want is for (Towersey) to denounce this,” said Gven Sariol, a cycling safety advocate at the Sariol Legal firm in Santa Ana.

The act isn’t illegal, law enforcement officials say, but cyclists are concerned that the new fad in the county’s beach communities could make an already dangerous situation worse.

From 2015 to 2016, about 200 traffic collisions resulted in cyclist injuries in Newport Beach, according to Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella. A dozen cyclists died in traffic accidents in Orange County in 2016.

“It’s getting out of hand,” said former Huntington Beach resident Javier Pedroza, 19, who was the target of a “butt dart” stunt.

Towersey said he’s actually performing the stunt, and recording it, as a way to promote safe bicycling: “Please ride safe and obey the rules of the road — That is all we ask,” he wrote in a caption for an Instagram post.

He declined to comment further.

Towersey operates the website ocinstanews, which has about 9,000 followers on Instagram. He calls himself “a home grown California kid in a grown man’s body delivering real news with real problems,” although his videos mostly document his antics.

He has been doing “butt dart” stunts at least since May, and some of his followers have joined him.

There are no state or local regulations against the act. Law requires that drivers must leave at least three feet of space as they pass cyclists, but there is no other regulation against drivers or pedestrians harassing cyclists.

California Highway Patrol officer Josh Nelson said it’s difficult to cite someone simply for yelling.

“Everyone would be arrested,” Nelson said.

But he also emphasized that the CHP’s “Share the Road” campaign highlights a need for drivers to understand that many roads are to be shared between drivers and cyclists.

Manzella, on Wednesday, said the Newport Beach Police Department has not fielded any criminal reports on “butt dart.” She also said, as far as she knows, no one has filed a complainant about the stunts.

She said it would be hard to cite or prosecute someone for the stunts.

“There are very specific violations of a law that has to take place in order for a criminal report,” she said. “There are a lot of acts that may fall short of that.”

Manzella urged those who witness or are targets of the stunts to call the police nonetheless.

“We can send officers to intervene before it escalates,” she said.

But regardless of the legalities, the act is upsetting many cyclists.

In Pedroza’s case, a car jumped in front of him while he was bicycling a couple of weeks ago. Riders in the car yelled at Pedroza, and he later saw a video of the incident on the ocinstanews Instagram page.

“How does that even make sense?” he said.

Around two months ago, Rick Van Tuyl was riding a tandem bike in Laguna Beach with a rider who is blind when an Audi pulled up next to him. He said those in the car yelled “butt dart” and shouted obscenities. Despite little traffic, the car drove side-by-side with van Tuyl’s bicycle for miles, he said.

“I didn’t know what would happen if kids ran out,” the 53-year-old Orange resident said.

Off-duty Modesto Police sergeant hit, killed by drunk driver, authorities say
AUGUST 22, 2017 8:18 PM
A Modesto police officer has died after being struck by a drunk driver while the officer was riding his bicycle, authorities said.
Police Chief Galen Carroll announced the death in a video posted on the department’s Facebook page.
“It is with deep sadness I notify the community that we lost one of our officers tonight,” Carroll said. “Earlier in the evening, one of our officers was involved in a vehicle vs. bicyclist accident where he succumbed to his injuries.”
The accident was reported on Maid Mariane Lane near Savage school in Village One.
The investigation has been turned over to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP spokesman Thomas Olsen said the call came in at 6:10 p.m. “Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and located a male adult lying in the roadway,” Olsen said at the scene late Tuesday evening. “Emergency personnel did everything they could to save his life but he succumbed to his injuries.”
Olsen identified the officer as a sergeant who has been with the department since 2012. He previously served with the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s office.
The driver was located at the scene and showed signs of intoxication. His name also was not released. The CHP arrested him and took him into custody for driving under the influence, Olsen said. He will face numerous felony charges.
“This is a huge loss for his family and the Modesto Police Department community,” Carroll said.
Investigators remained on the scene for several hours after the accident. Modesto police officers were joined by Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies.
Other agencies offered condolences via social media.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Modesto Police Department family,” Sheriff Adam Christianson said in a Facebook post.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our brothers and sisters at the Modesto Police Department,” the Modesto Fire Department posted on its page.

MODESTO -- An off-duty, recently promoted Modesto sergeant died when he was hit by a driver Tuesday evening, according to Chief Galen Carroll.
CHP reports the officer was riding his bike along Merle Avenue, near Daniel J. Savage Middle School, when he was fatally struck from behind by a car.
At the scene of the collision, around 6: 10 p.m., an arresting officer noticed the driver of the car presented signs of intoxication, according to CHP.
CHP is not reporting the identity of the driver, but does say that the person will face multiple felony charges in addition to DUI.
The Modesto Police Department has not named the officer, but CHP says he had been with the department since 2012. Prior to that he worked with Tuolumne County. Just weeks ago he was promoted to sergeant.
Local departments posted their condolences Tuesday evening.

Riding a bicycle in Florida can be deadly, and and yet another study has put the state at the top of the list of the most dangerous places to take your bike out on local roads.

The Governors Highway Safety Association, with funding from State Farm insurance,  Thursday that shows Florida had the nation's highest proportion of bicyclist fatalities at 7.4 percent in 2015.
Researchers also found that bike deaths across the country are on an incline — 12.2 percent — and are outpacing the overall rise in traffic fatalities.
The study used 2015 data because it was the most recent complete data available.

Experts say Florida's roadways were built with cars in mind, not pedestrians or cyclists. Decades ago it used to be children who died most often in bike fatalities. Now, it's adults. The study found the average age of those who died in 2015 to be 45.
Tampa Bay is playing right into that statistic. On July 12, a 45-year-old was hit and killed in Clearwater after police say he drove his bike into the path of a car. The month before, a 42-year-old died after a car hit him and then fled the scene in St. Petersburg.

Time and time again, studies show the risks facing Florida cyclists.
A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analysis from 2008 to 2012 found the state had the highest rate of bicycling deaths in the continental U.S.
A report released this year by Smart Growth America placed the top seven most dangerous metropolitan communities for pedestrians in Florida, including Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater at No. 7.
The bulk of the incidents are blamed on distracted drivers. Often, those drivers are on their cellphones or texting while behind the wheel.
You can checkout the new report .

A Berkeley cyclist was killed Sunday morning after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on Highway 116 just west of Guerneville.
The cyclist, a 59-year-old man, was stopped on the right shoulder looking at his phone, when the out-of-control westbound BMW careened into him about 8:45 a.m., a news release from the CHP said.
After striking the cyclist, the driver continued westbound for a distance before turning around and heading back toward Guerneville, the release said.
The Berkeley man was declared dead at the scene. His name was not released.
According to CHP logs, the car — described as being all black with blacked out windows and taillights — was found abandoned in Rio Nido. A license plate was located at the scene of the crash, but the driver is still at large.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the CHP at 707-588-1400.

Monday, August 28, 2017
A 72-year-old bicyclist was seriously hurt after crashing into a suspected barbed wire trap on an Arkansas bike trail, authorities say.
The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported that the crash happened Friday morning as Charles Grim was riding his bike on the Tsa La Gi trail near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fayetteville.
While traveling, Grim ran into a piece of barbed wire that was suspended at chest level, according to the newspaper.
Grim suffered a major head injury and was transported to a local hospital, where he was placed in intensive care, police said.
The case is being treated as a criminal investigation.

An arrest has been made in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a 22-year-old bicyclist in San Luis Obispo Tuesday night.
San Luis Obispo police say the suspect is a 17-year-old girl from Los Osos who reportedly admitted to officers that she had been drinking prior to the crash.
The victim has been identified as Kennedy Love, 22, of San Luis Obispo, a landscape architecture student at Cal Poly, who police say lived nearby.
San Luis Obispo police say officers responded to the area of Foothill Boulevard and Ferrini Road at about 11:30 p.m. and found Love unresponsive in the road. CPR was performed, but he died from his injuries.
"There wasn't any cars or anything in the road and just all of a sudden saw the crumbled up bike and unfortunately seeing the blanket laid over the man there," said neighbor Ijan Webb.
Another neighbor told KSBY the crash sounded like a car had struck a trash can.
"The back of the bike frame was totally bent and everything and so it was clear they didn't stop or anything, just full on hit him with all their speed," Webb added.
Police say witnesses reported seeing a vehicle with damage to the front driver's-side window enter the Foothill Plaza parking lot. They say two females got out, appearing to be checking out the damage, before driving off.
The vehicle was found at about 1:00 a.m. abandoned on Tassajara Drive near Luneta Drive, according to police.
Officers say they then contacted the registered owner of the vehicle in Los Osos and it was at that time the teen confessed to hitting the bicyclist and admitted she had been drinking prior to the collision.
She was arrested and faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI and felony hit-and-run. Her name has not been released due to her age.
Police say they are speaking with the person who may have been with her at the time of the collision. It is not known if that person will face any charges.
Foothill Boulevard was closed for several hours between Ferrini Road and Cuesta Drive while the investigation took place.
The area is heavily traveled by bike commuters, particularly students.
"We do have a higher incidence of vehicles versus bicycles in that north area of the town and specifically the area surrounding Cal Poly," said Lt. Brian Amoroso, San Luis Obispo Police Department.
Police say Love was not wearing a helmet and it is unclear if lights on the front and back of his bike were on when he was hit.

Cal Poly sent the following message to students, faculty and staff on Wednesday afternoon:
We are deeply saddened to report that fourth-year Landscape Architecture student Kennedy Love, 22, died last night after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on Foothill Boulevard.  Our thoughts are with Kennedy's family and friends during this difficult time of loss.  The campus is planning to hold a memorial service shortly after the start of the academic year, in coordination with Kennedy's family.  Please look for an announcement on the Dean of Students website (www.deanofstudents.calpoly.edu) in the coming days so that we can celebrate Kennedy's life together.

We want you to know that Cal Poly is here to support you, even when we're not together in San Luis Obispo. Counseling services are available for Cal Poly students 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling 805-756-2511.  Please do not hesitate to contact them.  The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides confidential counseling services to all Cal Poly employees and their families.  To speak with a counselor at any other time, please call their 24-hour support hotline at 800-367-7474.  More information about EAP's confidential services is available at https://afd.calpoly.edu/hr/worklife.asp.  For additional support, please contact the Dean of Students office at 805-756-0327 or email deanofstudents@calpoly.edu.

Finally, Kennedy was closely connected to Front Porch, an off-campus, religiously affiliated organization.  Front Porch has offered to be an additional source of support for students.  Please contact the organization at 818-731-4984.
In this time of loss, please know that we care about each of you and we look forward to our community coming together at the start of the fall quarter.  If there are other ways in which we can support you, please be sure to let us know.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey D. Armstrong

A bicyclist was killed in a collision with a car near Long Beach’s border with Lakewood Thursday morning, according to authorities.
The collision happened on Downey Avenue just north of South Street at around 9:45 a.m., Long Beach police Detective Sirilo Garcia said.
The bicyclist turned onto Downey at a diagonal angle that put him in front of a 2013 Hyundai Genesis, according to a statement from Long Beach police Thursday afternoon.
Police said the bicyclist was riding in a northwesterly direction across the northbound lanes of Downey Avenue from the east service road of Downey Avenue and Hedda Street.
“Upon seeing the bicyclist diagonally crossing Downey Avenue, the driver merged into the (No. 2) lane of Downey Avenue to avoid the bicyclist,” police said. “At the same time the driver was changing lanes, the bicyclist made a right hand U-turn into the (No. 2) lane of Downey Avenue and into the path of the vehicle. The driver could not avoid the bicyclist and collided with him.”
The bicyclist saw the car at the last minute, but as he and the driver tried to avoid each other, they collided near the intersection of La Jara Street, Garcia said.
The bicyclist sustained significant body trauma and died at the scene. Police only identified him as a 50-year-old male.
The driver, a 20-year-old man from Hawaii, stayed at the scene.
A stretch of Downey north of South Street was shut down for the investigation into the crash.

A man riding his bicycle in the bike lane of State Route 76 was struck and killed Thursday by a vehicle traveling in the same direction, Oceanside police said.
The collision occurred just before 11 a.m. on SR-76 near Melrose Drive.
The cyclist was airlifted to Palomar Medical Center Escondido. Despite attempts to save his life, the man died from his injuries, police said.
He has not been identified.
The driver was taken into custody on a misdemeanor warrant and was driving with a suspended license, according to police.
He was later identified as Felix Ruizbazan of Oceanside, police said.
Officers said Ruizbazan veered into the bicycle lane and struck the cyclist.
A SigAlert was issued for westbound SR-76. Traffic was delayed for several hours during the investigation.
The cause of the collision was under investigation.

Bicyclist injured in Rosemead drive-by shooting
By Brian Day, San Gabriel Valley Tribune
POSTED: 09/03/17, 12:24 PM PDT | UPDATED: 1 DAY AG
A bicyclist escaped with minor injuries following a drive-by shooting in Rosemead early Sunday, authorities said. The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. as a 43-year-old El Monte man was riding a bicycle east along Garvey Avenue, near Walnut Grove Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. James Long said.
The victim saw a white full-size pickup truck pass by, also heading east, the sergeant said. An arm emerged from the passenger side of the truck before the victim saw flashes and heard the sounds of gunfire.
He suffered grazing wounds to two of his fingers, Long said. The attack caused the victim to crash his bike, and the attackers sped away.
Long said the man rode to his home in El Monte before notifying authorities of the shooting. The motive was unclear.
Any witnesses, or anyone with information can reach the sheriff’s Temple Station at 626-285-7171. Tips may also be submitted anonymously to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

A bicyclist was fatally struck Wednesday by a vehicle during a hit-and-run crash in Fountain Valley.
Authorities responded just before 1 a.m. to Brookhurst Street and Ellis Avenue, according to the Fountain Valley Police Department. The victim died at the scene.
A man was riding his bicycle northbound on Brookhurst Street when a vehicle struck him, throwing the man about 50 feet forward. The road does not have a bike lane, but drivers are obligated to make space for bicyclists, authorities said.
Surveillance footage from a nearby business helped police determine they're looking for a red, early 90s Mustang in connection with the crash.

Two men have been charged in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed an Oklahoma City cyclist.
One man charged in the case is accused of trying to cover up the hit-and run by later crashing the damaged SUV into a highway guardrail.
Marquez Paul Taylor, 33, of Oklahoma City is accused of leaving the scene of an accident after fatally hitting cyclist Brian Howard Bailey, 47, near NW 4 and N MacArthur in the early morning hours of March 18.
At the time of the accident, Taylor was driving an SUV that belonged to the girlfriend of his friend, Clarence Parker, 44, according to a court affidavit.
Parker told police that he let Taylor drive the SUV back to Taylor's house after Parker had too much to drink. Parker claims he fell asleep in the back seat of the SUV and was not aware of the accident that killed Bailey.
Taylor allegedly did not have a valid driver's license at the time of the accident.
Parker is accused of attempting to cover up the hit-and-run later that morning by crashing the SUV into a guardrail on the Indian Nation Turnpike near Marietta in order to conceal damage to the vehicle caused by striking the cyclist.
