Bike Friendly City?

Thank you for this series. It is grim but enlightening and I appreciate your work in collecting and posting it.

The fingers said:
It’s possible that he may have swerved out of the bike lane to avoid an obstruction, or moved left to turn onto Nabal Drive without checking for traffic.
However, it’s also possible that the driver may have been speeding, or drifted into the bike lane and only assumed the he swerved in front her.

Inattentive/callously indifferent driver, 19 out of 20 chance. In a civilized country like the Netherlands, the burden would be on the driver to demonstrate why she wasn't at fault. Here, there will be no justice.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A 23-year-old tourist from Australia was killed while riding a bicycle along Central Park West.
Police said Madison Jane Lyden was in the bike lane with a friend when she was fatally struck around 4:45 p.m. Friday.
“It’s just disgusting what happened here,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “A 23-year-old, in the bike lane, and of course there has to be a full investigation.”
“This is tragic, really, really tragic,” said Cheryl Houser, who lives on the Upper West Side and rides her bike almost every day.
Police said a black livery vehicle parked on the side of the street pulled into the bike lane in front of Lyden, causing her to swerve. She was then hit by a private garbage truck.
Both drivers stayed on the scene, and the garbage truck driver was taken into custody, police said. Charges were pending late Friday night.
“This is another example, from my point of view, of the danger of reckless driving. We’re going to make sure there’s a full investigation and we’re going to make sure that there are real consequences if anything happened here that was illegal,” the mayor said.
“We take our lives in our hands every single day, certainly on a bike,” said Houser. “I think there’s lots of blame to go around.”
Lyden was taken to Roosevelt Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
“The message to all drivers is: You’ve got to be responsible, you’ve got to be careful,” de Blasio added.

MOUNT LAUREL – Police are searching for the motorist in an upscale electric vehicle who reportedly hit a bicyclist and fled the scene.

Police were called to the 700 block of Centerton Road shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1 for a report of a car hitting a man on bicycle.

The victim told police he was riding east on Centerton Road after leaving the nearby Laurel Creek Country Club.

“He last remembers headlights behind him and then being struck by the vehicle,” police said in a news release Friday. The victim was treated at a local hospital.

Investigators said evidence at the crash scene indicates the car that struck the bicyclist is a Tesla Model X, between the years of 2016 and 2018. The SUV likely has damage on the passenger’s side front end, police said.

No mention whether the victim was riding an electric bicycle...

I wonder whether self-driving cars won't really take off until they can be programmed to hit and run. Car drivers do it so consistently, it surely must be what they want.

By Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez on September 14, 2018 1:16 pm

A cyclist struck by a driver midday Thursday on Howard Street died later that night, officials confirmed Friday.

Russell Franklin, 56, was cycling near Howard and South Van Ness streets around noon when he was struck by a driver, according to officials and witnesses at the scene.

Franklin died at 9:30 p.m. at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, according a hospital spokesperson.

The collision occurred just a stone’s throw from a People Protected Bike Lane protest at Howard and Third Streets, where dozens of bicycling activists joined hands to advocate for more and better protected bike lanes, and to decry vehicle intrusions into bike lanes.

One of those would-be protesters, Taylor Ahlgren, 36, came upon the collision on his way to the People Protected Bike Lane protest and tried to save Franklin’s life.

While walking through South of Market to the protest, Ahlgren said, “I heard a loud screech and a loud thud. I looked up and saw this person and bicycle flying through the air. I think I shouted ‘oh frock!’ and started sprinting over there.”

Ahlgren, who said he is trained in basic first aid, immediately went to Franklin’s side and offered shade from the sun. He checked Franklin’s pulse, and found none. He turned Franklin from his side to his back. The driver kept saying ‘he came out of nowhere, he came out of nowhere.’

Franklin was bleeding profusely, and the right side of his head was covered in blood, Ahlgren said.

“I just remember when his pulse came back,” Ahlgren said. “He started coughing a bit.”

The driver called 911, and came over to apply his jacket to Franklin’s head to stop the bleeding, which Ahlgren described as “gushing.”

“The driver and I were a team, trying to do anything we could to save his life,” Ahlgren said.

Eventually a nearby sheriff’s deputy walked by, radioed in the collision, and in three minutes an ambulance arrived, according to a San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson. Franklin later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Ahlgren, a tech worker who has lived in San Francisco for six years, said “It was really, really, really sad,” and noted that he also has been struck by vehicles twice while cycling in The City.

Franklin’s death is the fourth such fatality this year, twice the number of cyclist deaths that occurred last year, a fact the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition called “unacceptable” in a press statement issued Friday, especially considering The City’s Vision Zero mandate to reduce traffic deaths to zero by 2024.

“Russell did not deserve to die simply trying to get where he needed to go,” the coalition wrote.

Breaking News: Bike rider killed on Winnetka Blvd in the San Fernando Valley

September 18, 2018 / bikinginla / 2 comments
Word is just breaking that a man in his 60’s was killed yesterday while riding his bike in the Winnetka neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley.
The victim was reportedly riding his bike in the crosswalk on westbound Lanark Street crossing Winnetka Ave when he was struck by the driver of a 2001 Toyota Corolla around 6:30 pm.
He was taken to Northridge Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A street view shows a wide four lane roadway on Winnetka, with a center left turn lane and a bike lane in both directions, and an uncontrolled crosswalk on the west side.
No other details are available at this time.
This is at least the 35th bicycling fatality in Southern California this year, and the 18th that I’m aware of in Los Angeles County.
A ghost bike ceremony is tentatively scheduled for 9 pm tomorrow night. (Note: This originally said it would be held on Tuesday, but it will be Wednesday, instead.)

OK, since this continues to be a multi year long thread about bicyclists being killed, and nothing to do with finding a bicycle friendly city, i'm moving this to toxic..
