Hello all!

It’s been a while. I finally took the plunge and purchased what I hope to be a great donor fat bike the Framed Alaskan. I also purchased the BBSHD 100mm
And some Tesla model 3 cells. It’s will be at least be 3 weeks for the bicycle to be built and shipped. So as long as I can get a cell spot welder.... I’ll start the battery build first.

What I’ll need: (recommendations please)

Cell spot welder
Nickel strips
Kapton tape
14s BMS for 3.3 - 4.2v Lithium
Triangle bag
Upgrade my rotors from 160mm to 180??? 203???
Bracket extension for brake calipers
Pedals
Charger for my 52v 14s Tesla pack

For the battery spot welding I've used the Malectrics spot welder which gave me pretty consistent results. The kWeld is another popular option on this forum. I recommend a bluetooth BMS to be able to monitor the cell groups and temperature etc... such as this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32997552090.html?spm=a2g0s.12269583.0.0.5f2b2577CJgiwh

Thank you.... have you used this BMS???

Yes, I am currently using that BMS (the 320A version). It is in my build here:

Another day of gathering.
I decided to try Micah’s Tolls BMS from
VRUZEND.com

Nice that Micah includes diagram for the charge and discharge wires. 😊🙏🏻

It arrived today.

It’s a 52v nominal 14s BMS

Number of cells: 14
Maximum rated discharge current: 30 A
Charging voltage: 58.8 V
Maximum rated charging current: 15 A
Balance current: 50 mA
Operating temperature: -5ºF to 113ºF (-15ºC to +45ºC)
Board dimensions: 4.25″ x 2.33″ x 0.33″ (10.9 cm x 5.9 cm x 0.9 cm)

I received 1,000 Mod 3 cells, pure Nickel, Kwelder.
Was a good day. Built the Kwelder. Time to test it.

I received 5 of these yesterday and started testing my new mod 3 2170 cells.
Oh this will take a while.
1 of the 5 opus units slot 3 not working. 😭

To hot glue or not hot glue.... that is the question.
I know all or most of the pros and cons. I decided at last minute to hot glue so I could take measurements and share the difference on the model 3 2170 5000 mah NCA cells. 5p14s 1.26kw

My other reason for glue is to access the battery terminals to Easily add copper sandwich. Apparently this pack can handle 3c (75amp) I’ll probably only peak at 30amps and most of the time pull 9-12amps. But .......
I believe in no “C Rise” whenever possible.
C rise is the temperature that loss happens due to buss bar heat. I’m going for zero C Rise. 😉

Bottom 13” 330mm
Now 10.125” 260mm

Left 8.5” 216mm
Now 7” 180mm

Top 14” 356mm
Now 11.75” 295mm

Right 1.75” 45mm
Now 1.5” 40mm

The Labyrinth of the pattern welding has begun.
0.1mm copper with dual strips of 0.2mm pure nickel

One side done!

_bIc3IvgQK2nppUpHlaTUw.jpg

Both sides complete!
50.6v about 3.6v a cell 14s 1.26kw 25amp/hr
1260 watts 1C
2520 watts 2C

I'm learning from the past 10 years that this is very plenty for an ebike.

I'll probably use 600 watts or less most days :p hmmmmm lol

now I wonder if I put in the BMS that I purchased from Micah (no blue tooth) and put in some Cell Log 8s,
or wait for the BMS to arrive with the bluetooth. hmmmmm

FYI your image tags don't seem to be working

Dang! I thought I had it sorted out 😭

They seem to be working now.

Nice job on the battery pack. I like the copper under the nickle.

If your BBSHD pulls 30A and your BMS is rated at 30A also, thats cutting it close. Hopefully the BMS won't cause the controller to randomly turn off while you ride due to BMS 30A limit. To be safe I wouldve choose a BMS at least 35A, ideally 40 or 45A BMS. Otherwise you could have to feather the throttle upon acceleration phase. I thing it's about surge current being too high for the first millisecond. Chinese BMS sometimes can bloat there specifications a bit to sell more. So of they say 30A, it might be 30A and not a single amp more.

Absolutely a great point!
I contacted Micah with regards to the 30amps before making the purchase. 30amps is the continuous rating and can handle up to
80amps, but not 80 for long or it cuts.

I'll be mostly on lvl 2 or lvl 1 pedaling :) but I'm sure I'll hit 30 plus amps a couple of times  :D

I've also ordered an 80amp bms with Bluetooth from ebay, cause I like to try different things.
I got this tip from another forum. His name is Lithium God. He said this works flawless on his
electric Gem that is a hot rod.
https://www.ebay.com/i/193543710387
available in 40 80 300 and 400amps
