electric car motor?

What kind are you looking for?

Most people use large series-wound brushed motors. Advanced DC, Prestolite, there's a few manufacturers.

The EVDL is a good place to get information on cars:

AC Propulsion makes a very nice induction motor. Siemens and Curtis have some induction motor drives as well, but they tend to be very expensive!

I thought about picking up a surplus variable frequency AC drive off of eBay. If you search long enough, you might run across one that's suitable. I've seen some go for a few hundred dollars. (better than $25k for a AC Propulsion unit). Most of them are made for 480vac 3 phase, but sometimes I've seen lower voltages. Pretty much all VFD's rectify the AC input voltage before switching it with gigantic IGBT's. If you bypassed the rectifier, you could feed it directly from a battery. I think about 208v would be the minumum for this approach, so that's a lot of batteries.

Surplus AC induction motors are fairly cheap. I'm not sure if you'd have to rewind one to make it work, but they come in a variety of voltages as well.
