I've got a weird question:

I was considering a rear pannier bag to cart my laptop and charging system etc on my commute. I had the thought that having my laptop that close to the motor, the magnets could potentially corrupt the hard drive. Anyone commute with a laptop in their pannier with a rear hub motor?

Thanks,
Damian

There are already magnets inside the drive itself that are as (or more) powerful than the ones in the mtoor. ;)

Unless you crash and crush the drive I don't think you have any worries.

As a general rule you will not have any issues with a hard drive and magnets unless you take it into an MRI or something.

This hasn't been a problem for years. You are probably worried because you are tinking back to floppy discs. Hard drives are not like floppy disks which used magnetic discs to record making them susceptible to magnets. Your laptop will be fine.

I have to admit,, I've wondered what would happen if I got one of my super strong fridge magnets near a smart phone.

When you burn a motor, the magnets removed from the husk make a great fridge magnet.
